If the connection still drops frames, check Wi-Fi, competing uploads, your router, and the route to the streaming platform. A speed-test peak alone does not guarantee a stable stream.
What upload speed do you need to stream?
Your upload speed is the rate at which your connection sends data out. It is different from download speed, and the two can differ substantially. Compare the available upload bandwidth with the stream’s total bitrate; if you send a backup stream, include its bitrate too. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends keeping 20% headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips explain why shared networks can also reduce the bandwidth available to your stream.
There is no single upload-speed number that guarantees smooth streaming on every service. The platform, encoder, resolution, frame rate, network stability, and other users’ traffic all matter. These platform guidelines are useful starting points, not guarantees:
- OBS Project: Its 2024 troubleshooting guidance suggests starting with a bitrate at 75% of total upload speed. Treat this as a starting point for troubleshooting, not a promise that the connection will remain stable.
- YouTube: YouTube Help recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and says to account for primary and backup stream bitrates where applicable.
- Twitch: Twitch gives a general rule of upload speed equal to stream bitrate plus 30%. Its example says a 6 Mbps stream needs at least 8 Mbps upload speed. The retrieved FAQ does not state a publication year.
These recommendations use different margins, so do not treat any one of them as a universal engineering rule. Start conservatively, test under realistic conditions, and adjust for the platform you use.

Set a bitrate your connection can sustain
Bitrate is the first encoder setting to reduce when frames are dropping because the network cannot keep up. Use the streaming platform’s guidance for your codec and video settings rather than assuming one bitrate works for every resolution or frame rate.

| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommendation | AV1 or H.265 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Do not apply the H.264 figures blindly to AV1 or H.265; YouTube’s recommended values differ by codec. The same YouTube guide recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Keyframe frequency is an encoder setting, not a way to increase raw upload capacity. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the applicable guidance.
Lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate?
- Lower bitrate first. This reduces the amount of data the stream must send each second. Make a test stream and check whether the drops stop.
- If picture quality suffers, lower resolution or frame rate. Choose a mode that fits the platform’s current encoder recommendations and the upload speed your connection sustains.
- Retest with representative content. Fast movement and audio similar to your real stream make a more useful test than an idle scene.
Measure the connection and diagnose the cause
OBS Project describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. That does not by itself tell you whether the cause is Wi-Fi, another device, the router, the ISP, or the route to the platform. Use the steps below to narrow it down. OBS’s troubleshooting article is dated September 30, 2024.

- Run a speed test and record upload speed. Test while the connection is quiet, noting the time and whether other people or devices are active. Repeat at the time you normally stream. Compare the upload result—not download—with your intended total stream bitrate.
- Check stream and encoder health during a test. Use OBS’s network or dropped-frame statistics and the platform’s stream-health indicator. Test privately or unlisted before a public broadcast, if your platform offers that option. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time and monitoring stream health.
- Set a bitrate below stable upload capacity. Do not set it equal to the best result from a speed test. Keep capacity in reserve for fluctuations and other uplink traffic; account for backup streams if you use them.
- Try Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection. Ethernet can help if Wi-Fi is the weak link, but it cannot increase the capacity of your internet plan. Check the cable too: a faulty cable can cause connection problems.
- Pause competing uploads. Stop cloud backups, file uploads, and other heavy uplink use. If you share the connection, ask others to avoid bandwidth-intensive uploads during the stream. YouTube notes that shared networks can limit available bandwidth; Twitch likewise says other devices’ upload use affects streaming.
- If drops continue, isolate the route or service. Try another ingest server if the service allows it. A short test on another streaming service can help identify whether a problem is specific to a service or route; it is diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix. Review VPN, security, or bundled network-optimization software, update network drivers, and restart the modem and router. If the issue persists, contact your ISP with the test times, upload results, and stream-drop details.
OBS also offers dynamic bitrate, which can lower bitrate during network congestion to reduce dropped frames. It is a fallback rather than a root-cause fix, and the picture may lose quality while bitrate is reduced. See the OBS Project stream connection troubleshooting guide.
Why a faster speed test may not fix dropped frames
A speed test is a snapshot of performance to its test server. A live stream sends data continuously to a platform’s ingest server, and the network route, congestion, Wi-Fi reliability, or competing traffic can differ. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. If a test shows adequate upload speed but a stream still drops frames, check the live statistics and try a different ingest server before assuming you need a faster internet plan.

Cloudflare Stream’s July 30, 2026 troubleshooting guide gives service-specific advice: it states a 20 Mbps minimum upload speed and suggests reducing a stream above 15 Mbps to 8 Mbps or 70% of internet speed, whichever is lower. Those figures apply to Cloudflare Stream’s guidance; they are not universal requirements for Twitch or YouTube. See Cloudflare’s live-streaming troubleshooting guide.

- Consider Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unreliable. A wired connection can remove a weak wireless link from the path, but it will not overcome an ISP-side upload limit.
- Check the cable before replacing other hardware. A faulty Ethernet cable can cause problems; a new cable is not a bandwidth upgrade if your current wired connection works and the bottleneck is the plan or upstream network.
- Consider a higher-upload plan only when measurements support it. If stable wired tests during your usual streaming hours remain below the bitrate you need, discuss upload capacity with your ISP. A faster advertised tier matters only if upload capacity is the actual constraint.
- Do not expect PC-cleanup software to increase ISP upload capacity. The practical fixes are measuring the uplink, adjusting encoder settings, reducing competing traffic, and troubleshooting the network path.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the problem is keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running from your own computer, StreamNeo takes the computer and home connection out of the continuous streaming path. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It streams to YouTube, not from a live camera.
