Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn OBS, enable Settings → Advanced → Automatically Reconnect so the encoder retries after a lost connection. That can restore the OBS-to-YouTube feed when your internet returns, but it does not guarantee YouTube will keep the same live event open or restore the same viewer session. Check YouTube Live Control Room after every outage; if the event has ended, you may need to start or create a stream again.
Configure OBS to reconnect after a dropped connection
- Open OBS Settings → Advanced. Turn on Automatically Reconnect. OBS community guidance places the setting in Advanced and suggests increasing the retry allowance for longer interruptions. Field names, defaults, and behavior can vary by OBS version, so inspect the controls in your installed version rather than relying on a universal retry count or duration.
- Confirm the YouTube encoder details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, make sure OBS is configured with the intended server URL and stream key. The key authorizes an encoder to send a feed to YouTube; treat it as a password and do not share it. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance and encoder setup instructions.
- Review auto-start and auto-stop. YouTube lets you configure whether the encoder starts or stops the stream automatically. These options control encoder-related start and stop behavior; they are not a guarantee that an event which has ended will reopen after a network outage. Check the settings for the specific stream in Live Control Room.
- After connectivity returns, check both ends. In OBS, inspect whether the stream has reconnected. In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect the event status, and check the public watch page if appropriate. If YouTube says the event ended, restart the encoder or set up a new event as required; do not assume viewers are back on the original session.
- Test the full recovery path before leaving it unattended. YouTube recommends testing stream setups and backup-encoder failover. Disconnect the network, restore it, and verify both OBS’s connection and what viewers actually see on YouTube. Repeat after changes to OBS, the stream setup, or network equipment.
What automatic reconnect can—and cannot—recover
OBS automatic reconnect is an encoder-side retry: it tries to send the feed again after a disconnect. It depends on the computer and its network connection being available again. Even if OBS reconnects, YouTube’s event may not remain active, and the existing watch-page session is not assured. YouTube does not establish a universal outage timeout or guarantee same-event recovery in the cited setup guidance, so check the event status rather than planning around a fixed number of minutes.
If you need unattended operation, distinguish the failure you are addressing. OBS reconnect helps with a temporary encoder connection loss; a second encoder can help with some primary-encoder failures; neither alone protects against a shared power or internet failure.
Reduce avoidable dropped frames before an outage
OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or that the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate. Enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. These checks can reduce preventable instability, but they cannot restore service during an ISP outage.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends that total stream bitrate fit available upload bandwidth and suggests leaving 20% headroom. This is a planning recommendation, not a guarantee of reliability. Include other household or office traffic when judging available upload capacity. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Use wired networking where practical. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi‑Fi can be unstable. An Ethernet cable for a wired OBS setup may avoid wireless instability, but cannot bring back an ISP connection that is down.
- Investigate the connection and system. OBS recommends checking bitrate and network conditions, possible software interference, and current network drivers. Make one change at a time and observe whether dropped frames stop.
- Reduce bitrate only as a trade-off. A lower bitrate may help when the connection is congested, but OBS cautions that dynamic bitrate does not solve the underlying network issue and can reduce video quality.
Would a backup encoder help?
YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover for streams that need it. Simulate primary failure—such as stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable—and verify that the player rolls over to the backup. A backup is useful only if its feed path is viable. If both encoders share the same failed ISP connection or power source, that common failure can still take the stream offline. For resilience to an internet outage, plan and test an independent working network path as well. YouTube’s recommendations are at its encoder setup page.
Choose a recovery approach for the failure you expect
| Approach | What it addresses | Dependencies and limits |
|---|---|---|
| OBS automatic reconnect | Retries the encoder connection after a drop. | Depends on the local computer and network returning; does not guarantee the YouTube event remains open. |
| Backup encoder | Can provide failover for some primary-encoder failures. | Test that YouTube’s player rolls over. A shared power or internet failure can affect both encoders. |
| Hosted continuous streaming | A different operating model for continuous playback of prerecorded video. | YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as a cloud-based option that does not require a dedicated PC. Evaluate current features, content suitability, control, cost, and terms; it is not an OBS reconnect setting. See YouTube’s encoder guide. |
Troubleshoot a stream that does not resume
- OBS keeps trying but never reconnects: confirm internet service is back, check that the correct YouTube server URL and private stream key are still configured, and inspect OBS’s network and dropped-frame status. Verify that no software or network change is blocking the encoder connection.
- OBS says it is live, but YouTube is not: inspect the event in Live Control Room. The encoder’s retry succeeding does not establish that YouTube kept the event open. If the event ended, restart or create the appropriate stream event.
- The stream reconnects, then drops frames again: check whether the selected bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity, leave the recommended bandwidth headroom, and test wired networking. Lowering bitrate can reduce congestion but may lower quality and does not repair an unstable or unavailable ISP link.
- A backup encoder fails to take over: run the failover test and verify the player behavior. Check that the backup has a usable feed path and does not depend on the same failed network or power source as the primary.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the channel needs continuous playback of uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, once per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
