To run a looping rain-and-thunder stream from a Linux VPS, put your licensed video and audio files on the server, use FFmpeg to send a compatible live feed to YouTube over RTMPS, then manage FFmpeg with systemd so it starts at boot and can restart after a process failure. This is a practical setup pattern—not a guarantee of uninterrupted service: you still need to check YouTube’s stream health, monitor the VPS and be ready to resolve platform, network or media problems.

What you need before you start

  • A Linux VPS with enough sustained outbound bandwidth for your chosen video bitrate, audio and headroom. If you plan to encode or transcode on the server, allow for the resulting CPU demand. There is no universally correct VPS size; choose based on your media, encoding method, bandwidth policy and testing.
  • A rain-and-thunder video recording that you have the right to stream, plus any separate audio you intend to use. A pre-rendered video with its audio already embedded is generally simpler to keep synchronized than independent loops.
  • FFmpeg with the encoder support required by your chosen settings. Available encoders depend on how FFmpeg was built; for example, libx264 requires a build with the corresponding support. Check the FFmpeg documentation and your installed build before settling on an encoding method.
  • A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live, and a broadcast configured in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • A plan to test and monitor the feed. YouTube advises testing representative audio and movement before going live and watching stream health and messages.

Use only media whose licence permits your intended use, including streaming and monetization if applicable. A label such as “royalty-free” or “public domain” is not, by itself, proof that a particular recording or image is suitable; verify the actual source and licence.

Choose resolution, codec and bitrate

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends CBR video, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and RTMPS where your encoder and ingest endpoint support it. For advanced stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3, a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. Match the settings to the actual feed and confirm that your VPS can sustain the outgoing bitrate.

Output AV1 or H.265/HEVC recommended video bitrate H.264 recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates, not measurements of any VPS provider’s capacity. Audio and network overhead add to the total traffic. If you cannot maintain the target reliably, choose a lower output or resolve the bandwidth limitation before relying on the stream. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, with frame rates up to 60 fps; your specific FFmpeg build and ingest path must support the option you choose.

Prepare the media and VPS

Upload and inspect your loop

Place the media in a directory reserved for the stream and confirm that FFmpeg can read every input. Check video dimensions, frame rate, audio stream, duration and codecs before configuring the service. If you use separate rain video and thunder audio, test that both loop cleanly and stay synchronized over time; mismatched durations or imperfect boundaries can produce silence, a jump or drift. One complete file with embedded audio avoids much of that synchronization work.

Decide whether to encode or copy

Live transcoding lets FFmpeg produce output settings that match YouTube’s recommendations, but requires sufficient VPS CPU. Stream-copying compatible pre-encoded streams can reduce CPU use, but only works when the input streams, container and timing suit the destination. Test the actual files and installed FFmpeg build; there is no single command or mode that is safe to assume for every source.

Check server capacity

Confirm the VPS has enough disk for the media and that its outbound bandwidth allowance and policy support a continuous stream. Consider sustained throughput, not just a headline connection speed, and leave room for audio and operational headroom. If encoding on the server, observe CPU during a representative test. Provider plan sizes, prices and network performance vary and have not been established here, so verify them with the provider and your own test rather than selecting a plan by a generic core or memory figure.

Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or configure the broadcast.
  2. Obtain the current ingestion endpoint and stream key shown for that broadcast. Use RTMPS if the selected encoder and endpoint support it; YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts data through Google’s servers.
  3. Store the key in a protected configuration or environment file readable only by the Linux service account. Do not put it in a public repository, paste it into a public example, or expose it in command output or logs. Treat it like a password.
  4. Set the output resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR target, keyframe interval and audio format to match the media, encoder and available bandwidth. Do not use a bitrate that the VPS cannot sustain.
  5. Start with a private or unlisted test broadcast. Confirm picture, representative movement, sound, stream health and YouTube messages before making the feed public.

For a community example of an Ubuntu, FFmpeg and systemd arrangement, see the 24/7 YouTube Stream setup and operations notes. It is an example, not an official YouTube recipe or a guarantee that its settings fit your VPS or files.

Run FFmpeg under systemd

Once the feed works in a manual test, run it as a dedicated, unprivileged service with an explicit working directory and protected access to the stream key. Create a systemd unit that launches your tested FFmpeg command and uses a restart policy for process failures. The exact command depends on your input format, codec support and whether you are copying or transcoding, so build and validate it against your files rather than pasting a generic command into production.

  1. Create a service account and a directory for the media and configuration. Restrict file and directory permissions so the account can read only what it needs.
  2. Put the tested FFmpeg invocation and secret handling in the unit or a protected configuration file. Avoid placing the key in a public script or a command that may be recorded in shell history or logs.
  3. Start the unit and inspect its status with systemctl status your-service-name. Review its journal logs for FFmpeg errors and verify that YouTube Studio reports the expected incoming stream.
  4. After the test succeeds, enable the unit at boot with sudo systemctl enable your-service-name. Confirm the behavior with a controlled restart or reboot and check the broadcast again.
  5. Keep an operator procedure for alerts and recovery. Track local process output as well as YouTube’s observed stream state, and establish checks for low disk, high CPU, network problems and YouTube warnings.

Systemd can restart a process that exits, but it cannot make YouTube accept invalid credentials, repair a broken media file, stabilize the VPS network or detect every platform-side interruption by itself. It is one recovery layer, not end-to-end monitoring or an uptime guarantee.

Test for the problems a loop can hide

  • Test beyond the opening seconds: verify the video and audio through loop boundaries, not just at startup. Check for a brief mute, sudden jump or synchronization drift.
  • Watch YouTube’s stream health: monitor the Live Control Room’s health messages during a representative test, as well as the FFmpeg process and logs.
  • Test recovery deliberately: confirm what happens when FFmpeg exits or the service restarts. Check whether YouTube receives the feed again and whether the broadcast needs an operator action.
  • Check sustained resource use: observe outgoing traffic and CPU under the real encoding workload; a short startup test does not establish long-term capacity.
  • Keep recovery access: know how to inspect the service, rotate a compromised key and restore media or configuration if the VPS is interrupted.

Troubleshooting

YouTube does not receive a signal

Check that the broadcast is configured in the Live Control Room, the current endpoint and key are correct, and the VPS can reach the selected RTMP/RTMPS endpoint. Inspect FFmpeg and systemd logs for authentication, connection or input errors. If you changed the key, update the protected configuration and restart the service.

The stream drops or YouTube reports poor health

Compare the outgoing target bitrate plus audio and headroom with the VPS’s sustained upload capacity. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot carry it reliably, and inspect network and YouTube health messages. A systemd restart can recover a crashed FFmpeg process, but it will not fix unstable bandwidth or a platform-side issue.

Audio is missing, out of sync or cuts out at the loop point

Check which audio stream FFmpeg is reading, confirm the selected codec and sample rate, and test the loop boundary. Separate audio and video sources can have different durations or timing; align them or use a single pre-rendered file with embedded audio.

FFmpeg exits immediately or uses too much CPU

Read the service journal and run the tested command interactively with the same inputs and permissions to isolate a missing file, unsupported codec or invalid option. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build includes the encoder you selected. If transcoding overloads the CPU, consider compatible pre-encoded media and stream-copying only after confirming it works for the actual inputs and output path.

The feed restarts but does not return to a healthy live state

Check whether the broadcast is still active in YouTube Studio, whether the key or endpoint changed, and whether FFmpeg can reopen the media and connect. Review both local logs and YouTube’s status; restarting alone cannot resolve invalid credentials, media errors or a platform-side interruption.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube-only alternative to maintaining your own VPS and FFmpeg service, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping from the cloud. Archive and rights considerations

Do not assume that a 24/7 broadcast will be archived or retained for a particular duration. Check YouTube’s current live stream archiving guidance for the rules that apply to your channel and broadcast. Separately, confirm the rights for every ambience recording, music track and visual you stream; an available file is not automatically cleared for live use or monetization.
