For a single YouTube stream produced on one computer, OBS is usually the simpler place to start. AWS Elemental MediaLive is a cloud video-processing service, suited to workflows that need cloud-side inputs, outputs or channel operations. They are not interchangeable encoders: OBS runs in your local production setup; MediaLive processes a configured channel in AWS. This is a workflow-based recommendation, not a measured comparison of setup time or performance in India.
OBS or AWS Elemental MediaLive for YouTube?
Choose according to where your production happens and what processing it needs—not on the assumption that one is universally better.
| Question | OBS | AWS Elemental MediaLive |
|---|---|---|
| Where does processing happen? | In the creator’s local software and hardware workflow. | In AWS as a cloud video-processing service. |
| When is it a natural fit? | When scenes and sources are handled on one computer and the goal is to encode and send a stream to YouTube. | When cloud-side video processing, configured live inputs and outputs, or managed channel operations are requirements. |
| How does YouTube receive the stream? | YouTube’s documented encoder workflow uses a stream URL and key from Live Control Room, entered in the encoder. | Configure a MediaLive output compatible with the selected YouTube ingest protocol and settings; verify the current AWS and YouTube documentation for that configuration. |
| What drives cost? | The available evidence does not establish OBS hardware or electricity costs. | Configured and running resources, including inputs, outputs and applicable features. Exact cost depends on Region and configuration. |
| What about sources and codecs? | Depends on the sources and encoders in the local setup and YouTube’s ingest requirements. | MediaLive supports multiple input types, but codec support varies by input type. |
Start with OBS for a local one-computer production
If your sources and scenes are already assembled on a computer, OBS is the straightforward starting workflow: configure the YouTube destination and send the encoded stream. YouTube’s documented encoder handoff is to copy the stream URL and key from Live Control Room and enter them in the encoder. The software choice still depends on whether your computer, network and operator workflow meet the production’s needs.
Evaluate MediaLive for cloud-side processing
MediaLive is worth evaluating when the workflow calls for cloud video processing or configured live inputs and outputs. It is not simply OBS running on a remote computer: channel setup, input and output configuration, resource states and billing all matter. MediaLive can accept several live input types, but a codec supported with one input is not necessarily supported with another.

Connect an encoder to YouTube
For an OBS workflow, YouTube’s documented process is to obtain the stream URL and stream key in Live Control Room, put those values into the encoder, then start sending the stream from the encoder. Menu names can differ between encoder versions; use the current YouTube and OBS interfaces rather than assuming a particular menu path.
- Prepare the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder instructions identify the stream URL and key there.
- Copy the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and key shown for the selected stream. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it with anyone who should not control the stream.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings. If the encoder offers RTMPS and supports it, use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than assuming the visible RTMP URL is already secure.
- Set video and audio parameters. Match the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio encoding to YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and your connection’s reliable upload capacity.
- Start the encoder and verify the stream. Start sending from the encoder, then check Live Control Room for the incoming signal and any warnings before you begin or share the live broadcast.
YouTube ingest settings to check
YouTube’s encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection—Indian or otherwise—will sustain the selected stream.

| Setting | YouTube guidance on the page accessed in 2026 | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS | Use RTMPS when supported. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL; copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 | Confirm that the chosen encoder and YouTube ingest workflow support the selected codec. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps | Use a frame rate your content, encoder and upload connection can sustain. |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | Set the encoder’s keyframe interval accordingly. |
| Rate control | CBR | Choose constant bitrate encoding rather than assuming a variable-rate setting is equivalent. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 | Check the encoder’s audio output format as well as its video settings. |
| H.264 at 1080p30 | 10 Mbps recommended | A YouTube recommendation on the page accessed in 2026; not a measured requirement for every network. |
| H.264 at 1080p60 | 12 Mbps recommended | A YouTube recommendation on the page accessed in 2026; check YouTube’s current table for other resolutions, frame rates and codecs. |
Bitrate needs headroom on the upload connection, especially if other devices or applications share it. The listed figures are YouTube guidance, not an India-specific network benchmark. Confirm the current bitrate table for the exact resolution, frame rate and codec before configuring a production stream.
What MediaLive changes in an India deployment
Validate the configuration, not just the codec name
AWS lists live MediaLive sources including CDI, HLS, Link, MediaConnect, RTMP pull and push, RTP, SDI, SMPTE 2110, and SRT caller or listener. Supported codecs depend on the input: for example, AWS’s input-codec table lists H.264 video and AAC audio for RTMP inputs. Confirm that the source protocol and its codecs match the exact MediaLive input type, then validate the output format and YouTube ingest requirements together.

Estimate AWS charges from channel state and resources
MediaLive charges depend on the configured Region and channel details, so there is no defensible single India price without those inputs. AWS describes both idle and running channel states:
- Idle channels: AWS describes an idle channel charge covering inputs and outputs. Idle unattached or stopped push inputs can also be charged; idle pull inputs have no charge.
- Running channels: AWS says there is no channel charge as such, but charges apply to each attached input and each configured output. Output charges apply even if an output is paused; attached input charges apply even if the input is inactive or receiving no content.
- Configuration and features: Input charges depend on input type and characteristics such as codec, bitrate and resolution; output charges depend on output characteristics including codec and frame rate. Feature add-ons may add charges. Input specifications also affect resource allocation, so overstating requirements can raise charges, while understating processing needs can result in insufficient resources and degraded output.
AWS states that MediaLive has no contracts or minimum commitments; that does not mean usage is free. Before estimating spend, check the current AWS pricing page for the intended Region, channel class, operating hours, inputs, outputs and any features. No exact regional price calculation is established here.

Account for dual-pipeline bandwidth if using standard channel class
AWS describes standard channel class as dual-pipeline and advises upstream bandwidth of twice the anticipated maximum source bitrate for a standard channel. This is an operational planning requirement for that configuration, not a promise of zero downtime or a reliability benchmark against OBS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.HDR is a separate setup decision
YouTube’s India-localized HDR help page, accessed in 2026, describes an OBS workflow requiring OBS 30.1 or later, a supported hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space. The page says HDR can use HLS or RTMP(S); HLS has its own stream-key configuration and segment requirements. Check the current YouTube instructions and your encoder hardware before attempting HDR. Do not carry SDR RTMP settings over unchanged or assume a MediaLive output is compatible without validating both products’ current configuration constraints.

What the India comparison does—and does not—establish
The architectural distinction and published setup guidance apply to the respective products and YouTube workflow, but the available official documentation does not establish an India-based OBS-versus-MediaLive latency or reliability comparison. There is no verified India-specific benchmark here for stream delay, uptime, or network performance. For an India deployment, verify the intended AWS Region and current regional prices, the ingest region or server, the network path, and the actual production requirements. Do not infer that either option is faster or more reliable in India from its local-versus-cloud design alone.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- YouTube does not show an incoming signal: Check that the encoder has the correct stream URL and key for the selected Live Control Room stream, and that streaming has actually started. If you changed or reset the key, update the encoder too.
- The connection fails when using RTMPS: Confirm that you copied the RTMPS URL—not the RTMP URL—and that the encoder supports the selected protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported.
- The stream buffers or drops frames: Compare the encoder’s actual output bitrate with the sustained upload capacity available to it. Reduce the bitrate or output demands if the connection cannot sustain them; the YouTube recommendations do not certify a specific network.
- MediaLive rejects or mishandles a source: Check the protocol and codec support for the exact input type. A codec supported by one MediaLive input type may not be supported by another.
- MediaLive charges continue while the stream appears idle: Review whether the channel is idle or running, which inputs are attached, whether push inputs are stopped or unattached, and which outputs remain configured. AWS documents charges for configured resources in circumstances where no content is actively being received or an output is paused.
- Standard MediaLive channel setup lacks source bandwidth: Recalculate against twice the anticipated maximum source bitrate, as AWS advises for its standard dual-pipeline class.
- HDR is unavailable or the picture looks wrong: Check the OBS version, hardware HEVC support, Main 10 profile, P010 format and Rec. 2100 color-space choice against YouTube’s current HDR instructions.
