A dependable 24/7 channel therefore needs more than a playlist: plan YouTube session rollover, recovery, rights checks and secure stream-key handling. What IBM Video Streaming can—and cannot—do
IBM Video Streaming is a SaaS platform for live broadcasts and on-demand delivery. IBM describes supported plans as allowing multiple simultaneous streams to run continuously in live, simulated-live or on-demand modes. That makes it a possible continuous source platform, but it is separate from YouTube: you still configure YouTube Live as the destination.
Continuous programming does not mean one YouTube broadcast session can stay open indefinitely. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; its cited encoder guidance does not promise an indefinitely open single session. Treat 24/7 operation as a system with planned session rollover and a way to recover if a handoff fails.
Choose the kind of continuous channel you want

Do not describe a simulated-live playlist as a camera feed occurring in real time. IBM’s playlist capability does not establish that every YouTube account or content library can rebroadcast prerecorded material without restriction; confirm the actual routing and rights workflow for your channel.

Set up an IBM Video Streaming channel
- Create and access your account. IBM’s getting-started guide says to create an account, select a plan or request a 30-day trial, sign in with an IBM ID, verify your email and launch Video Streaming from the My IBM dashboard. The guide says the trial is by request and a paid subscription is needed after it ends. Check current terms in the purchase flow before budgeting.
- Create the source channel. In the product dashboard, create a channel and choose the appropriate broadcast workflow. IBM describes channel options including open or password-protected access, as well as channel and recorded-video management.
- Choose a live encoder feed or Live Playlist. Use the live path for a camera, studio or production feed. Use Live Playlist for prerecorded programming displayed as simulated live.
Configure a true live feed
- Open the IBM channel’s broadcast or encoder settings and obtain its ingest URL and channel key.
- In your software or hardware encoder, enter the IBM ingest URL and key as the publishing destination. IBM says RTMPS is available for secure ingest.
- Start the encoder and confirm that the source is reaching the IBM channel before proceeding to YouTube.
The IBM URL-and-key pair is a publishing credential: IBM warns that someone possessing both may be able to broadcast to the channel. Do not expose it in screenshots, public documents, shared layouts or unsecured scripts. If it is exposed, replace or rotate the credential through the service’s available controls and update the encoder.
Prepare an IBM Live Playlist
- Establish the channel with a real broadcast first. IBM’s Live Playlist best-practices article says the channel must first complete a true broadcast lasting longer than two minutes before its first playlist can be created.
- Check every video length. Each video in the playlist must be longer than two minutes.
- Add an opening buffer. Playlist processing can delay its start by up to two minutes. Begin with a countdown, holding slide or other suitable buffer so viewers do not arrive to an unexplained gap.
- Consider a closing buffer. IBM also recommends a closing buffer. Build it into the schedule so playlist transitions and the intended end of programming are less abrupt.
- Review the schedule and rights. Confirm the playlist order, repeat behavior and rights for every item before routing the program to YouTube.
Send the IBM output to YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe creating a stream in YouTube Studio, copying the stream URL and stream key into the encoder, starting the encoder and checking the Live Control Room preview. For a scheduled stream, the instructions also say to select Go live when ready. YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders.

- In YouTube Studio, create the live stream or scheduled event for the channel.
- Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key from the live setup.
- Configure the IBM-to-YouTube publishing workflow with the YouTube destination details. Confirm which system is the active encoder or relay in your particular setup; do not confuse IBM’s ingest credentials with YouTube’s stream key.
- Start the source and inspect the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Check video, audio and the correct destination before making the broadcast public or selecting Go live for a scheduled event.
- For a first-time YouTube live stream, allow up to 24 hours for live streaming to become enabled, as YouTube’s help page advises. Complete this check well before a planned launch.
Keep the two credential sets separate: the IBM key authorizes publishing to the IBM channel, while the YouTube stream key identifies the YouTube destination. Store both securely and limit access to the people who operate the stream.
Plan session rollover for a 24/7 schedule
YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams shorter than 12 hours. The cited guidance does not establish that one session can stay open past that duration without interruption, or that IBM automatically reconnects a YouTube relay. Do not advertise an uninterrupted, indefinitely open single session on that basis.

- Decide how the YouTube broadcast will be ended and restarted before the archive boundary, and who or what is responsible for each step.
- Test the complete rollover path, including whether the next session can be started and the audience can find the live broadcast.
- Verify what viewers see if the source, encoder, IBM connection or YouTube session stops; define who responds and how quickly.
- Check that the archive and live-event arrangement suits your channel’s publishing plan.
The cited setup instructions do not supply a universal IBM-to-YouTube automatic-reconnect procedure. Verify the behavior in your own account and operating arrangement before relying on it for continuous service.
Clear rights and protect the channel
YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content, including another live broadcast. A detection may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it; a copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a broadcast.

A license by itself may not prevent interruption: YouTube says licensed third-party material can still be interrupted if the channel has not been added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. Before launch, clear the rights for music, clips, sports, news and other externally owned material, and ask the rights holder about allowlisting where relevant. A playlist is not exempt from these checks merely because its videos were prerecorded.

- Measure whether the actual upload connection can sustain the selected live feed, including any backup connection you plan to use.
- Confirm that the content and distribution plan comply with applicable rights and rules for your channel.
