Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Keep at least 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, test the actual scene and audio, and monitor stream health before leaving the setup unattended. Exact settings depend on your GPU, OBS version, workload and connection.
Set up NVENC in OBS for YouTube Live
-
Check which encoders your GPU and OBS expose
In OBS, open Settings → Output and select an NVIDIA NVENC encoder from the encoder menu. The available codecs vary by GPU generation and installed OBS build; check your GPU’s supported NVENC codecs rather than assuming it supports H.264, HEVC or AV1. NVENC is a dedicated hardware encoder, separate from the graphics and CUDA cores. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding to move video encoding off the CPU and onto a specialized GPU component. NVIDIA NVENC Application Note; OBS encoding documentation.
-
Choose a codec and ingest protocol
For a straightforward SDR setup, H.264 over RTMPS is a broadly supported starting point. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS encoder streams and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream in transit to and within Google’s servers. Use the codec-specific bitrate row below. HDR requires a different workflow; see the HDR section. YouTube Live encoder settings.
-
Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval
In OBS output settings, set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and sets a maximum interval of four seconds for live encoding. These are live-ingest settings, not recommendations for encoding a video file upload. YouTube Live encoder settings.

Set the video and audio structure
For SDR, YouTube’s advanced live settings list progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, square pixels, Rec. 709 and 8-bit video. For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and 128 kbps for stereo. Apply controls that your selected OBS encoder exposes, and do not mistake an unavailable control for a reason to change unrelated settings. YouTube Live encoder settings.

Choose a sustainable NVENC preset
NVIDIA’s OBS broadcasting guide uses P6 (slower, better quality) as a starting point, with Look-ahead and Psycho Visual Tuning enabled. Treat this as a vendor starting recommendation, not a guaranteed 24/7 preset. NVIDIA warns that Look-ahead uses CUDA acceleration; disable it if GPU utilization is high. Test the real scene and workload, then reduce preset demands if you see encoder overload or rendering lag. NVIDIA broadcasting guide; OBS encoding documentation.
Recommended YouTube Live bitrates
YouTube’s live encoder table gives these recommendations. Values are megabits per second (Mbps); select by output resolution, frame rate and codec.

These are YouTube encoder-ingest recommendations; YouTube’s published table does not establish that every connection, GPU or scene can maintain them. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings when configuring a stream because platform guidance can change.
Size the connection and test the whole setup
YouTube says total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. If you use a primary and backup stream, account for both bitrates when sizing outbound capacity. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, testing before going live, using representative movement and audio, previewing the stream, and monitoring stream health and messages. For an unattended 24/7 setup, extend those checks to a long-duration test. Confirm that the GPU can render the scene and encode continuously, temperatures and power remain stable, the network does not drop, and the stream recovers after an OBS, computer or service interruption. These are practical operational checks, not a YouTube-certified configuration or uptime guarantee.
- Test with the actual scene, movement and audio rather than a static test screen.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test.
- Verify any local archive recordings if you are recording alongside streaming.
- Test failover and restart behavior before relying on the setup unattended.
- Confirm the live event is accessible to its intended audience.
HDR requires a different encoder workflow
Do not use the SDR H.264 settings above as an HDR recipe. YouTube’s HDR instructions call for HEVC, 10-bit video, BT.2020 color primaries and matrix, and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. Its documented OBS workflow uses a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. The required ingest details depend on whether you use HLS or RTMP(S); consult YouTube’s HDR instructions for the selected workflow. YouTube lists OBS 30.1 as the minimum for its documented RTMPS HDR workflow. YouTube HDR live streaming.

Troubleshoot common NVENC and stream problems
- NVENC or a codec is missing: The GPU generation and installed OBS build determine which encoder choices are available. Check the GPU’s supported codecs and update or verify the installed OBS build before choosing a workflow.
- YouTube reports unstable stream health: Check that upload capacity can sustain the total stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Recheck the selected resolution, frame rate and codec against YouTube’s live table; test upload bitrate and monitor stream health.
- OBS reports encoding overload: The selected preset or workload may exceed sustainable encoding capacity. Test a less demanding preset and remove optional processing that adds load; prioritize a stable stream over a slower quality preset.
- OBS reports rendering lag or GPU utilization is high: The GPU may be too busy rendering the scene while encoding. Reduce scene/rendering demands and disable CUDA-accelerated Look-ahead, as NVIDIA advises when GPU utilization is high.
- Stream disconnects or does not recover: Test network reliability and restart behavior rather than assuming a 24/7 configuration will recover automatically. YouTube recommends testing failover; check both the local streaming setup and event status after interruption.
- HDR appears washed out or is rejected: Verify that the workflow uses HEVC, 10-bit/P010, BT.2020 and the intended PQ or HLG transfer characteristics, with ingest requirements matched to HLS or RTMP(S).
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that keeps running without a home PC, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream a camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home, and each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
