How to Loop a Single Video Continuously on YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can’t set a single-video loop in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube’s built-in Loop control repeats playback for a viewer on a regular video’s watch page; it does not send a repeating video as a live broadcast. To make a video play continuously on YouTube Live, use an encoder or cloud service that repeats the video source, connect it to your YouTube stream, and check the incoming preview before going live.

Choose the right kind of loop

Method What repeats Where it applies
YouTube’s Loop control Playback for the viewer A regular video or playlist watch page
Encoder-based live feed The source video sent by the encoder, if it supports repeating it YouTube Live through Live Control Room

For ordinary playback, a viewer can open a video on a computer, right-click the player, and select Loop. For a playlist, expand the playlist and use its Loop control. These controls affect the viewer’s playback; they do not create a livestream or control one in Live Control Room. YouTube’s instructions for looping videos and playlists cover the watch-page controls.

How to loop a video in a YouTube Live broadcast

You need a source that plays the video repeatedly and an encoder or cloud service that sends that source to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains how to connect and monitor an encoder, but does not confirm the single-video loop feature in any particular encoder. Check the tool’s current documentation for repeat support, then test the full setup before relying on it.

  1. Create or select the livestream. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab and use the stream URL and stream key shown there. The encoder uses these details to send the feed to YouTube. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it.
  2. Set up repeat playback in your source or encoder. Choose the video file and enable the encoder’s repeat or loop option, if available. The exact control and supported file formats depend on the encoder; YouTube’s encoder guide does not specify them. Confirm the behavior in that encoder’s current documentation.
  3. Choose compatible stream settings. Set codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval in the encoder. Match the settings to YouTube’s current recommendations for the codec, resolution and frame rate you intend to use; do not treat a bitrate for one format as universal. YouTube publishes its recommended bitrate ranges in its live encoder settings. Use an upload connection that can sustain the selected bitrate.
  4. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check that the image and audio are correct and that the video returns to the beginning when it ends. YouTube recommends testing the stream and checking audio and video quality before the event.
  5. Go live and monitor the broadcast. Once the preview is correct, select Go live. Monitor stream health and confirm that audio and video continue throughout the broadcast.

How to choose an encoder or service

Do not assume that a tool can repeat a single file just because it can stream to YouTube. Before committing to a long broadcast, verify these points in the provider’s current documentation and test them:

YouTube documents encoders as software or hardware that send a feed, and lists third-party options; that listing is not confirmation that a specific product loops a single video. YouTube’s encoder overview explains the category and workflow.

What looping is—and is not

Viewer Loop is not a live-stream setting

The native Loop control repeats a video or playlist for someone watching it on the watch page. It does not turn an uploaded video into a live broadcast.

DVR does not loop the broadcaster’s source

DVR lets viewers pause or rewind some live streams; it does not repeat the video being sent by the broadcaster. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Check YouTube’s DVR guidance for the current limitations.

Ingest protocol does not add repeat playback

YouTube documents RTMPS and HLS as ingest options. Choosing a protocol does not make the source loop. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP and has its own setup requirements; see its HLS ingestion guidance before selecting it.

Long streams have separate archive considerations

YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that as a guarantee of an archive for longer broadcasts; review YouTube’s current guidance for the planned duration. The 12-hour threshold is also relevant to the separate DVR limitations above.

Troubleshooting a video that will not loop or stream

  • The video plays once and stops: The source or encoder may not have repeat playback enabled, or may not support it. Verify the specific repeat control in the encoder documentation and test that the source returns to the beginning.
  • No preview appears in Live Control Room: Check that the encoder is using the stream URL and stream key for the selected YouTube stream, and that it has started sending. Keep the key private; if it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  • The preview is choppy or the stream health is poor: Confirm the encoder’s bitrate, codec, resolution and frame rate against YouTube’s recommendations. Check whether your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
  • Video appears but audio is missing or wrong: Check the source file’s audio and the encoder’s audio input and output settings, then test again in the preview before going live.
  • You expect viewers to rewind or expect a complete archive: These are not source-loop controls. Check YouTube’s current DVR and archive guidance for your broadcast length.
