Then check RTMP/RTMPS transport and port settings, and use YouTube’s stream-health messages to distinguish a connection problem from an invalid video or audio configuration. “24/7” by itself does not identify the cause.
1. Confirm the key belongs to the stream you intend to run
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select the scheduled or current stream that FFmpeg should feed.
- Copy that stream’s Stream URL and Stream key from its settings. Put each value in the matching destination field in FFmpeg; do not substitute a guessed server address, an old URL, or a key copied from another stream.
- If the key was reset or the stream settings were changed or reused, update FFmpeg with the current key. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it in a support request.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its Manage live stream settings help page. If you ask for help diagnosing FFmpeg, redact the key from the command first.
2. Separate a key problem from an RTMP/RTMPS connection problem
A rejected key and a failed connection are not necessarily the same failure. Check the exact URL, protocol, and error before changing credentials again.
For an SSL error or failed secure connection
- Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room, including its server and path. YouTube displays the ordinary RTMP URL by default; use the lock control to reveal RTMPS.
- For the SSL error described in YouTube’s guidance, check that the connection uses port 443. Specify port 443 in the URL or encoder configuration if needed.
- Make sure the FFmpeg build and configuration support RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP in its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.
For a timeout or failure to reach YouTube
Verify that the endpoint is the valid YouTube ingestion server and application/path from Live Control Room, and that FFmpeg supports the selected protocol. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion documentation treats the protocol, server, path, and required port as part of the endpoint. A timeout is a reason to check transport and connectivity, not proof that the key itself is wrong.

Do not switch to HLS as a generic key fix
HLS is a separate ingestion mode with different requirements: HTTPS, muxed M2TS media, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, and prescribed playlist and segment handling. YouTube notes that HLS usually has higher latency than RTMP- or WebRTC-based ingestion. Use it only when the stream configuration and encoder support call for it, not simply because an RTMP/RTMPS key was rejected. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation.
3. Check the video and audio FFmpeg actually sends
A command may request settings that the emitted stream does not match. Check the actual output against YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than assuming the intended settings took effect.

- Video: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, at up to 60 fps.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies AAC.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and sets four seconds as the maximum.
- Resolution and bitrate: Match bitrate guidance to the output resolution and frame rate. In YouTube’s undated guidance accessed in 2026, the recommended H.264 bitrate is 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are recommendations, not guaranteed minimum upload capacities.
These are compatibility checks, not evidence that a particular setting caused a reported rejection. The relevant values and ranges are in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
4. Use Live Control Room health messages to choose the next check
Look at the stream-health status and messages while FFmpeg is sending. YouTube’s LiveStreams API health-status documentation includes issues such as unsupported codecs and configuration mismatches. If YouTube receives the feed but reports a media validation issue, follow that message rather than repeatedly replacing the key.

YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages. Test with representative motion and audio so the test checks the actual media profile, not just whether FFmpeg can connect. See YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance.
5. Match the symptom to the next action

| YouTube does not accept the stream or the key appears invalid | Confirm the selected Live Control Room stream, then recopy its current key and matching Stream URL. |
| SSL error or secure connection failure | Check that FFmpeg is using the displayed RTMPS endpoint and port 443, and supports RTMPS. |
| Connection times out | Check protocol support, server and path, and whether the connection can reach the selected ingestion endpoint. |
| The feed arrives, but health messages identify a codec or configuration issue | Check the actual encoded video/audio, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and matching bitrate guidance. |
| The stream connects but is unstable | Compare the output bitrate with the available upload capacity and review Live Control Room health messages. The material available here does not establish your network conditions or a specific cause. |
6. What to include when the checks do not resolve it
For a useful diagnosis, record the exact YouTube error or health message, whether FFmpeg is using RTMP or RTMPS, and whether the feed appears in Live Control Room. Share the FFmpeg command only after replacing the stream key with a redaction such as [REDACTED]. Include the output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval. Without those details, there is no reliable way to identify one root cause from “rejecting a stream key” alone.
