How to Use AWS Elemental MediaLive with a YouTube Live Stream Key

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To send AWS Elemental MediaLive to YouTube, copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then enter them separately in MediaLive’s RTMP output: the URL goes in Destination and the key goes in Stream Name. Start the MediaLive channel; for a scheduled YouTube stream, wait for the encoder preview and click Go live in Live Control Room.

Before you start

  • Access to the YouTube channel’s Live Control Room and the AWS account where the MediaLive channel is configured.
  • A YouTube stream configuration, either a new one or an existing configuration you can load in the Stream tab.
  • A compatible video and audio input for MediaLive. AWS’s example uses H.264 video and AAC audio; its example is not a complete or universally applicable YouTube settings prescription.

YouTube supplies two distinct values: a server URL and a stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to that stream. Do not paste it into public notes, screenshots, or chat.

1. Get the current YouTube server URL and stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
  2. Open the Stream tab. Create a stream configuration or load an existing one. YouTube allows settings from a previous stream, including its key, to be loaded again.
  3. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream you intend to use. Use the current values from this screen, not an endpoint copied from an old guide or another platform.

YouTube’s instruction is direct: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” The two values are used in different MediaLive fields.

2. Add the YouTube destination in MediaLive

  1. In the AWS Elemental MediaLive console, open Channels and edit the channel that will send the feed.
  2. Add an RTMP output group.
  3. In RTMP destination A, enter the YouTube server URL in the destination URL field.
  4. Enter the YouTube stream key in Stream Name. MediaLive models the RTMP destination endpoint and stream name separately; do not append the key to the URL unless the current MediaLive interface specifically requires a different format.
  5. Set the video and audio outputs to fit both the input and YouTube’s current ingest guidance. AWS’s tutorial example uses H.264 and AAC and advises that output dimensions should not exceed the input dimensions. Select codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and protocol together; do not treat a tutorial’s sample values as universal presets.
  6. Save or update the channel after checking the destination and output configuration.

3. Start MediaLive, then complete YouTube’s Go live step if scheduled

  1. From the MediaLive Channels page, start the channel.
  2. Check the MediaLive channel status and allow time for the encoder feed to reach YouTube.
  3. For a scheduled YouTube event, return to Live Control Room and wait until the encoder signal appears in the preview. Then select Go live. Starting MediaLive sends the feed but does not replace this confirmation step for a scheduled stream.
  4. For a non-scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s instructions say to start the encoder to send the stream live.
  5. When finished, stop sending content. For a scheduled stream, also select End stream in YouTube.

Choose protocol and video detection deliberately

Decision Use this when Important qualification
RTMPS YouTube recommends its encrypted extension to RTMP for live ingest, so prefer it when the selected MediaLive output supports the protocol. Use the ingest URL presented by YouTube and confirm the output supports the protocol you select.
HLS Consider it for an HDR workflow if the encoder cannot provide the required capabilities over RTMP(S). AWS documents a specific YouTube 4K HDR HLS workflow, but its URL pattern and encoding values are a worked example; recheck current YouTube and MediaLive guidance before using them.
Automatic resolution and frame-rate detection This is YouTube’s recommended default for most configurations. YouTube detects the incoming resolution and frame rate automatically by default.
Manual resolution settings Use only when a fixed output is needed and supported by the source. YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual stream-resolution settings.

For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S). If the encoder cannot support the needed capabilities through RTMP, YouTube says HLS may be considered. Verify current compatibility and settings for the specific MediaLive channel rather than transplanting an older HDR example unchanged.

Troubleshoot a missing preview or failed feed

Symptom Check and fix
No encoder preview in Live Control Room Recheck that the current YouTube server URL is in MediaLive’s destination URL field and the matching key is in Stream Name. A stale, mistyped, or mismatched pair is a basic configuration check.
MediaLive appears configured but sends no feed Confirm that the channel is started, its status is healthy, and the RTMP output group is configured and running.
Preview appears, but a scheduled stream is not live to viewers Once the signal is present in preview, select Go live in Live Control Room.
The stream key may have been exposed Replace or rotate the key in YouTube Studio, then update the MediaLive Stream Name field with the new key.
Output fails or quality is unsuitable Check the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, source capability, and chosen protocol as a set. For HDR, re-evaluate the H.265 and RTMP(S)/HLS decision against current guidance.

Cost considerations

MediaLive cost depends in part on channel configuration; AWS notes that width, height, frame rate, and bitrate affect cost. Estimate using current AWS pricing and the actual channel configuration rather than relying on an old example or a generic figure.
