You can loop a prerecorded video into YouTube Live from a Linux mini PC by sending an encoder feed to YouTube’s ingest server. For a graphical setup, OBS Studio’s Media Source can loop a local file. For a command-line workflow, FFmpeg supports indefinite input looping. “Headless” needs a qualification: remote administration is practical, but the official OBS materials do not establish a universal, fully headless Linux deployment or guarantee unattended recovery. Test the whole setup privately before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Check eligibility in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- A Linux mini PC with a compatible distribution, graphics support, stable network connection, and enough sustained encoding capacity for your chosen output. OBS’s Linux installation guidance requires OpenGL 3.3 or later; that alone does not establish that a particular machine can encode a given resolution reliably. - A video or audio file you have the rights to stream, plus an encoder: OBS Studio for a graphical scene-based workflow or FFmpeg for command-line control.
- A YouTube stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, place it in screenshots, or expose it in logs. YouTube lets you reset a compromised key in Live Control Room.
Create the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Confirm that the channel is eligible for live streaming before configuring the encoder.
- Create or schedule a stream, then set its title, description, visibility, and other metadata. Use private or unlisted visibility for a setup test if appropriate.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. Enter them in OBS or FFmpeg as appropriate; keep the key confidential and reset it from Live Control Room if it is exposed.
- Use the stream’s preview and health indicators during testing. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the URL and key to receive a live feed; it does not turn a channel playlist into a live stream.
Set up a looping video in OBS Studio
OBS is the more direct option if you want to configure scenes, audio, and overlays in a graphical interface. Its Linux Media Source supports common media formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Consult the OBS Media Sources guide for source controls.
- Install OBS using the official Linux installation guidance. Check that the mini PC’s distribution, graphics driver, and OpenGL support meet the requirements, then test the actual machine under sustained load.
- Open OBS, create a scene, and add a Media Source. Select the local video or audio file and enable Loop.
- Review the source’s end-of-playback and restart behavior. OBS lists controls such as Show nothing when playback ends; configure them so the scene behaves as intended at the file boundary and when the source is restarted.
- Check that the scene contains the intended audio and that it is neither silent nor excessively loud. Confirm that the video and audio continue correctly when the source reaches the end and loops.
- In OBS stream settings, select the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Choose RTMPS if the encoder presents that option for standard encoder streaming.
- Configure the output profile and test it before using the stream publicly. YouTube’s current encoder settings include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use only a codec actually available in your installed OBS build and supported by the target hardware. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Start with an output the mini PC and upload connection can sustain continuously. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; the H.264 examples below are ingestion guidance, not a performance guarantee for your computer.

Set CBR where available and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. The table is not a substitute for checking the other codec-specific lines if you choose HEVC or AV1, or a different frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard encoder streaming. Leave network headroom rather than setting the stream bitrate equal to the connection’s best-case upload speed. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth room and says to account for primary and backup streams where applicable. Test on the same network and with representative audio and motion; monitor the Live Control Room preview and stream health. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.
Use FFmpeg for a command-line loop
FFmpeg supports -stream_loop -1 to repeat an input indefinitely. This is useful for a fixed media file and command-line automation, but there is no universal YouTube-ready command: the right setup depends on the file’s video and audio codecs, whether audio is present, target bitrate, installed FFmpeg build, hardware encoder support, and YouTube endpoint. FFmpeg documents the option in its command-line documentation.

- Inspect the file and your FFmpeg build so you know the input streams, codecs, and available encoders. Decide whether the input can be stream-copied compatibly or must be re-encoded for the target output.
- Construct a command that loops the input with
-stream_loop -1, maps the intended audio and video streams, sets the chosen output encoding and bitrate, and sends the feed to the stream URL and key supplied by YouTube. - Test the exact command with the target mini PC, file, and network. Confirm the video continues through a full loop, audio is correct, and Live Control Room reports a healthy stream.
- Keep the stream key out of shell history, publicly readable scripts, process listings where practical, and logs. Use an appropriately protected secret mechanism for your environment rather than putting a credential into a public command example.
FFmpeg’s input loop option establishes how to repeat the file; it does not by itself guarantee compatible output, successful RTMPS support in every build, or automatic recovery after an interruption.
What “headless” does—and does not—mean for OBS
OBS documents launch parameters including --startstreaming, --profile, --collection, and --scene. After configuring a scene and profile, an operator can use the startup flag as part of an automation approach. That is not proof that every OBS Linux build runs as a fully headless service without a graphical session, nor does it guarantee restart or reconnection behavior. See OBS launch parameters.

A mini PC administered over SSH may still need to run whatever graphical session and encoder environment its selected OBS build requires. The official materials do not provide a universal headless recipe, and there is no supported basis here to claim that a particular display workaround or service configuration is always required or sufficient. If you need a command-line-only process, evaluate FFmpeg against your media and hardware, then test its interruption and restart behavior yourself.
Validate continuity before leaving the stream unattended
- Run a private or unlisted test with the actual media, audio, output settings, mini PC, and internet connection you plan to use.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and health status. YouTube advises testing with similar audio and movement and monitoring stream health.
- Leave the test running long enough to observe a full media loop. Check that the file does not disappear at end-of-file, playback restarts as expected, and audio remains correct.
- Test the failure cases that matter to you: mini PC reboot or power interruption, network loss and recovery, encoder restart, and whether YouTube requires you to resume the broadcast manually.
- Only rely on an unattended setup after you have verified its actual behavior. The cited documentation does not promise automatic reconnection, a particular maximum continuous broadcast duration, or recovery for every Linux encoder setup.
RTMPS or HLS?
For a standard encoder loop, RTMPS is the straightforward choice: YouTube recommends it for encoder streaming. HLS is a different segmented workflow, not a simpler looping mode. YouTube’s HLS ingest requires HTTPS, TS segments between 1 and 4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and POST/PUT requests; it also has higher latency than continuous RTMP. Choose HLS only when its codec or workflow support is needed. See YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.
