How to Configure Audio Fade Transitions Between Nature Clips in OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To fade audio as you switch between nature clips in OBS, put the clips in scenes, choose Fade under Scene Transitions, and set its duration. OBS documents the video transition; a 2020 OBS forum reply says audio sources entering or leaving with the scene fade during that transition, but do not continue fading afterward. Check the behavior in your installed OBS version and record a short test before going live.

Choose how to arrange the clips

Use separate scenes when you want to choose exactly when to switch clips. Use a VLC playlist when you want sequential playback with playlist controls. OBS documentation confirms that VLC Video supports playlists, looping, shuffling, and visibility behavior; it does not establish that changing playlist items creates the same audio fade as switching scenes.

Separate scenes for deliberate changes

  1. In OBS, create a scene for each clip or for each deliberate playback state, using the + control in the Scenes dock. Give scenes clear names so you can identify the next clip while operating.
  2. Add the appropriate media source to each scene. OBS Media Source supports common audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Configure the source for the clip you want that scene to play.
  3. Switch between the scenes to trigger the selected scene transition. This arrangement makes the change point explicit.

VLC playlist for sequential playback

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS requires it for the VLC Video source type to appear.
  2. Add a VLC Video source and configure its playlist, loop, or shuffle options as needed.
  3. Test how the playlist advances in your installed version. Do not assume that a playlist item change behaves like a scene transition for audio.

See OBS’s Media Sources guide for supported source types and options.

Set the scene transition to Fade

  1. In OBS, find the Scene Transitions section.
  2. Select Fade. OBS says Fade is available from first launch and that the active transition and its duration can be changed.
  3. Set the duration for the transition. There is no single ideal time for every clip: choose a duration that suits the pacing and content, then listen to a test recording.
  4. Switch between your clip scenes and observe the video and audio. The selected duration controls the transition interval.

Interface labels may vary between OBS versions. The OBS Studio Overview Guide explains scenes and transition selection.

What to expect from the audio fade

The OBS scene transition is the control for changing scenes; it is not a separate, independently timed audio envelope. A community-forum reply from 2020 describes audio sources that enter or leave with a scene fading during the scene transition, with no fade tail after it finishes. That is a forum explanation, not an official guarantee for every OBS release, so verify it in your installed version.

If the audio does not fade as expected, check that the source is arranged with the scenes so it is absent from one and present in the other. A source that remains active in both scenes may not enter or leave in the way the forum explanation describes. For a manually timed audio fade independent of the scene transition, the cited OBS guides do not establish a complete native step-by-step procedure.

Use mixer controls and filters for their intended jobs

Scene transitions, mixer levels, and audio filters solve different problems. The Audio Mixer controls source levels; filters process the audio signal. OBS documents Gain and Compressor filters, including compressor sidechain ducking, which lowers one source in response to another—for example, background audio under a microphone. That is not the basic control for fading between scenes.

Consult OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide, Filters Guide, and Compressor Filter guide if you need to adjust levels or dynamics.

Test the transition before going live

  1. Watch the Audio Mixer meters while you switch between scenes. Check for unexpected jumps or clipping.
  2. Record a short sample of the transition, then listen back. Confirm that the fade is audible, the next clip starts at the expected time, and the levels sound consistent.
  3. If the result differs from what you expect, check the source and scene arrangement first, then test again. OBS recommends recording and listening back before a live session.

Troubleshoot common fade problems

  • The picture fades but the audio jumps: Check whether the audio source actually enters or leaves with the scene, and test a recording in your installed OBS version. The forum-described audio behavior is tied to sources entering or leaving during the transition.
  • The audio fade stops abruptly: The 2020 forum reply describes the fade as lasting only for the scene-transition interval, without a trailing tail. Adjust the transition duration and test again; OBS’s cited guides do not document an independent audio fade duration here.
  • You cannot find VLC Video: Install VLC, then check the source list again. OBS requires VLC for that source type.
  • A playlist change does not fade audio as expected: Test the playlist behavior directly. The OBS guide documents playlist controls, but does not say every item change produces a scene-transition audio fade. For explicit scene changes, use separate scenes.
  • The audio level is uneven or clips: Watch the mixer meters and adjust source levels or applicable filters, then record and listen back. A compressor’s sidechain function is for one source reacting to another, not for triggering the basic scene fade.
