You can use IBM Video Streaming and an encoder to send a continuous feed to YouTube, but IBM does not replace YouTube’s ingest setup: each service has its own stream URL and key. Configure an encoder that can send to both destinations, verify that the specific encoder and version support that arrangement, and test both feeds before relying on them. IBM says its platform supports simultaneous streams to multiple channels for 24 hours or longer; that is a capability statement, not an uptime guarantee. YouTube may not archive a stream longer than 12 hours, so plan separately if you need a complete replay.
What you need before you start
- An active IBM Video Streaming account and an IBM channel for the broadcast.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- An encoder that supports the output configuration you intend to use. Confirm whether it can send simultaneously to IBM and YouTube; the services’ separate encoder instructions do not establish that every encoder supports dual output.
- A reliable upload connection with enough capacity for the encoder’s outgoing stream or streams.
- A recording and archive plan if you need to preserve the full broadcast.
IBM documents third-party software and hardware encoders, including OBS Studio, Wirecast, and TriCaster. Its workflow uses an RTMP URL and Stream Key. RTMPS is also supported. See IBM’s third-party encoder instructions.
Set up IBM and YouTube as separate destinations
1. Activate IBM Video Streaming and choose a channel
IBM’s Getting Started instructions describe selecting a subscription or requesting the trial, registering with an IBM ID, verifying your email, signing in to My IBM, and selecting Launch to open the service. In the service dashboard, create or select the channel that will receive the broadcast. Signup terms and trial processes can change, so check IBM’s current product page.
2. Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, use the Stream tab to create or schedule an encoder stream.
- Copy the YouTube ingest URL and stream key. YouTube uses these credentials to accept the encoder feed; its key is separate from IBM’s.

3. Copy IBM’s RTMP URL and Stream Key
- In IBM Video Streaming, select the channel you chose for the broadcast.
- Open Broadcast Settings.
- Under Encoder Settings, select View.
- Copy the IBM RTMP URL and Stream Key into the corresponding server/URL and stream-name/key fields in your encoder’s IBM destination.
Treat the IBM key as sensitive publishing access. IBM warns that anyone with both the RTMP URL and Stream Key may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not include the key in screenshots, public documents, or pages. IBM’s Broadcast Settings guidance explains the channel settings.
4. Configure and verify the encoder’s outputs
Add YouTube as a destination using the YouTube ingest URL and key, and IBM as a destination using IBM’s URL and key. Encoder interfaces vary, so there is no universal menu path. Before going live, check the documentation for your exact encoder and version to confirm simultaneous outputs are supported and to learn whether it uses separate encoders, output profiles, or a relay. IBM’s and YouTube’s pages document their own ingest workflows; they do not establish that IBM directly relays a feed to YouTube.

If the encoder cannot send to both destinations in the arrangement you need, do not assume that entering both sets of credentials will work. Choose an encoder or separately designed relay workflow that explicitly supports your topology, then test it. A relay adds another dependency and should be monitored as part of the broadcast path.
Choose an encoding profile and network capacity
IBM and YouTube publish different recommendations for 720p/30 H.264, so a single profile should not be treated as universally optimal for both. IBM’s guidance for most applications recommends one 720p source encoded as H.264 Main at 1,200–4,000 kbps, 25 or 30 fps, with a 1-second keyframe interval and AAC-LC audio at 128 kbps. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends CBR, keyframes every 2 seconds (no more than 4 seconds apart), and 8 Mbps for H.264 720p at 30 fps.

Use those figures as platform-specific guidance, not a guarantee that a given dual-output setup will pass both services’ checks. Confirm what your encoder can set per destination. If it can apply separate profiles, validate each feed independently; if it uses one shared profile, test that profile with both services and review their stream-health feedback. IBM’s recommendations are in its network and encoding guidance; YouTube’s are in its live encoder settings.
Check upload capacity and connection stability
Both platforms emphasize reliable upload bandwidth. Use a stable connection, preferably wired where practical, and leave headroom beyond the stream’s bitrate for network variation and other traffic. If the encoder sends separate full-rate outputs rather than one shared feed, account for the total outgoing traffic. Neither platform’s cited guidance specifies a particular networking model, and a good connection cannot guarantee uninterrupted service.

Test the broadcast before leaving it unattended
- Start a test feed early enough to resolve first-time YouTube activation or encoder configuration issues.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview before going live. Confirm picture, audio, destination, and stream health.
- Check IBM’s channel for the incoming broadcast and verify its health there as well.
- Confirm any local recording is being created and that its file is growing.
- If you rely on backup-encoder failover, test that transition rather than assuming it will work.
- Monitor both destinations after launch. A healthy feed at one service does not prove the other is receiving correctly.
YouTube recommends testing encoders ahead of an event, checking the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and testing backup-encoder failover. Its guidance is available at YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting and setup guidance.

IBM’s Broadcast Settings includes an auto-recording option for recording broadcasts to a channel. Check that it is enabled if needed, and verify the recording behavior and retention in your account before relying on it.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR pause and rewind can also be limited or unavailable on very long streams. Therefore, do not promise viewers one complete YouTube replay from a continuous 24/7 session. If a full archive matters, arrange a local recording or plan shorter YouTube sessions, and test the exact workflow. See YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance and DVR guidance.
Costs and plan fit
IBM’s pricing page, viewed October 3, 2026, displayed starting prices of $154/month for Silver, $773/month for Gold, and $1,550/month for Platinum, alongside a 30-day trial plan. These displayed prices and plan terms can change. Plans differ in viewer hours, channel counts, storage, and features, so check the current IBM Video Streaming pricing page and confirm that the chosen tier covers your intended use; the listed starting price alone does not establish suitability for every YouTube workflow.
