Install VLC first; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. For one video rather than a playlist, use a Media Source and enable its Loop property.
Choose the right OBS source
| OBS source | Best for | Repeat setting | VLC required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source | A playlist of multiple files | Loop Playlist restarts the playlist when it reaches the end; it is on by default. | Yes. Install 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. |
| Media Source | One local video file | Loop repeats that file after it finishes. | No VLC dependency is stated for this source. |
Use the VLC playlist when you need several videos to play in sequence. Its Shuffle Playlist setting controls whether items are randomized or played in list order. The source also has a Visibility Behaviour setting for what happens when the source is hidden or its scene is not active.
Set up a repeating playlist in OBS
- Prepare the video files. Keep them in a stable local folder and decide the sequence you want. If you later move or rename a file, check that the playlist still points to it.
- Install VLC. OBS needs VLC for the VLC Video Source to appear. Match the architecture: 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- Add the playlist source. In the scene’s Sources dock, select the + button, choose VLC Video Source, and add the video files to its playlist.
- Set repeat and order. Keep Loop Playlist enabled. Turn off Shuffle Playlist if you want the files to play in the listed order.
- Choose hidden-source behavior. Set Visibility Behaviour according to whether playback should continue, pause, or stop when the source is not visible. For uninterrupted playback across scene changes, make sure the selected behavior will not stop or pause it.
- Compose the scene. Size and position the video source. OBS displays sources in a stacking order: put overlays above the video when they need to remain visible.
- Test the sequence. Watch the playlist reach its last item and return to the first. Confirm picture and audio, then test a scene change if the source might be hidden during the stream.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- Get the connection details. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and use the stream’s server URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming connection settings.
- Protect the stream key. YouTube describes it as functioning like a password and an address. Do not share it publicly; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before relying on the stream.
- Choose output settings. Match the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to what your encoder, computer, and sustained upload connection can support. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Start with a test. Test with similar audio and motion before the long run. Check OBS’s output and YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health.
There is no single best resolution or bitrate for every setup. YouTube recommends having upload bandwidth for the total stream bitrate plus 20% headroom. If other devices share the connection, their traffic can reduce the bandwidth available to OBS.
Keep a 24/7 stream reliable
- Verify that the playlist advances, returns to its first file, and has audible audio before leaving it unattended.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health during the broadcast and check that OBS is still sending video and audio.
- For a choppy picture or OBS encoding overload, reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or remove expensive sources. The performance required depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
- Plan separately for power, computer stability, and internet interruptions: a local OBS setup depends on the computer and connection continuing to operate.
Know the YouTube archive limit
A continuous live broadcast is not a guaranteed single complete replay. YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete copy, record a local archive and verify that recording; YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. An external drive is optional for storing a large collection or separate recording, not a requirement for OBS or YouTube.

Troubleshoot a playlist that stops
| Symptom | Check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The video ends and stays on the last frame. | Confirm the source is visible and Loop Playlist is enabled. | Enable playlist looping. For a single-file Media Source, enable its Loop property instead. |
| VLC Video Source is missing from the source menu. | Check whether VLC is installed and whether its architecture matches OBS. | Install VLC; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. |
| Playback pauses or stops after switching scenes. | Review the VLC source’s Visibility Behaviour. | Choose the behavior that lets playback continue when the source is hidden, if uninterrupted playback is required. |
| The stream looks choppy or OBS reports encoding overload. | Consider the selected encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. | Lower the resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or reduce expensive sources, then test again. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed drops. | Check OBS output, YouTube’s stream-health status, and sustained upload bandwidth. | Retest at settings the connection can sustain, with YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom beyond the total bitrate. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer or connection to stay on, StreamNeo runs an uploaded-video stream from the cloud to YouTube. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
