You can loop a compatible prerecorded video from an Indian VPS to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, but “always-on” is an operating goal, not an uptime guarantee. Enable YouTube live streaming first, use the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio, reserve enough outbound bandwidth, and supervise FFmpeg so it can recover from process failures. This guide covers a prerecorded-file loop; live inputs need different reconnect handling.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned test. YouTube Help: enable live streaming.
- An Indian VPS that permits sustained outbound streaming. Check region availability, egress limits or transfer caps, restart access, and monitoring with the provider. The India location is a hosting choice, not a special YouTube encoding mode; official guidance does not identify a preferred Indian provider or region.
- A prerecorded source file and enough server disk space for it, logs, and any independent recording you plan to keep.
- FFmpeg installed on the server. Consult the official FFmpeg command-line documentation and protocol documentation for the build and options available on your system.
Get the YouTube ingest details safely
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live.
- In the Live Control Room’s Stream tab, create or select a stream and copy the server URL and stream key displayed there. Choose private or unlisted visibility for an initial test; YouTube’s encoder workflow also supports public streams. See YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.
- Prefer the RTMPS endpoint if it is offered for your stream. Google’s guidance specifies TLS on port 443 for RTMPS; use the exact server URL displayed in Live Control Room rather than guessing an endpoint. See YouTube RTMPS ingestion.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not publish it, commit it to source control, place it in screenshots, or leave it in shell history or logs. Store it in a protected configuration or environment file with restricted permissions. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the server configuration.
Choose output settings for the source and YouTube profile
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec; do not borrow a bitrate from an unrelated tutorial. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its settings page includes current bitrate guidance and supported codec and audio options: YouTube recommended encoder settings.
- Set the video bitrate and maximum rate to the target appropriate for the selected output profile if re-encoding. Set the buffer size and GOP/keyframe interval consistently with that profile and YouTube’s current guidance.
- For the template below, replace
VIDEO_BITRATE,VIDEO_BUFFER, andKEYFRAME_INTERVALwith values appropriate to the output you selected. The two-second recommendation is an interval, not a bitrate or a universal GOP value independent of frame rate. - If the file already has compatible codecs, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, consider stream-copy mode to avoid unnecessary CPU use. Verify compatibility rather than assuming a file is suitable just because it plays locally.
- Re-encoding consumes more CPU; size the VPS based on the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and measured encoder load. No fixed VPS size is established for this workload.
Estimate the VPS network capacity
YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate and warns that network disruption can break a stream. For a single stream with target bitrate B, plan for at least B × 1.2 of sustained outbound capacity. This is an application of YouTube’s margin, not a separately certified VPS requirement. Include other server traffic and provider limits in the estimate; if sending primary and backup feeds, apply the margin to their combined bitrate. See YouTube’s bandwidth guidance and troubleshooting live streams.
Check sustained egress and the provider’s monthly transfer allowance or egress billing from the actual VPS, rather than relying on a headline download-speed figure. The reviewed official guidance does not establish Indian VPS provider quality, pricing, or a best region. Compare available India-region hosting on outbound capacity, transfer costs, route quality, disk, CPU if re-encoding, console and restart access, and monitoring.

Start a prerecorded-file loop with FFmpeg
This template loops a file in real time and encodes it as H.264 video and AAC audio for an FLV/RTMP-family output. It is a starting point, not a tested universal command. Replace the placeholders and endpoint with your selected profile and the exact URL and key from Live Control Room.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/source.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE
-maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
-g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL -c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_SERVER_URL/YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY'
In production, do not put the real key directly in the command: process listings, shell history, or logs could expose it. Supply credentials through a protected configuration method appropriate to your deployment. Confirm the path and permissions for /srv/stream/source.mp4; the file must remain available for the duration of the loop.

If you use stream-copy instead, the encoding options are different: remove the video and audio encoder settings and use stream copy only after confirming the source codecs and parameters are accepted by YouTube. FFmpeg documents its command-line behavior and RTMP-family protocols at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html and ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-protocols.html.
Keep the process running and verify recovery
Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd with restart-on-failure, persist logs, and monitor process health, outbound traffic, and whether YouTube continues receiving the feed. A restart policy can recover from a crashed process; it cannot guarantee uninterrupted output or fix a failed source, network route, or ingest session. FFmpeg documents TCP keepalive support for long-lived RTMP connections, but keepalive is not a substitute for handling failures and checking ingest recovery.

- Start with a private or unlisted test stream and confirm that Live Control Room receives a preview.
- Check audio and video quality, then verify the watch page and playback on a mobile device before making the stream public. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video during a stream. See YouTube live-stream troubleshooting.
- Stop and restart the process deliberately during testing. Confirm that your supervisor restarts it, that the new ingest appears in Live Control Room, and that alerts or logs make an exit visible.
- After the test, decide whether the channel should be public, unlisted, or private and verify access from the intended audience’s account.
Plan for archives and content rights
YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local archive backup, and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If a complete replay matters, record independently and schedule sessions below that threshold rather than relying on one uninterrupted broadcast. YouTube Help: archive live streams.
Use only video and audio for which your channel has the necessary rights. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the content provider to hold those rights, and live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Repeating a file from a VPS does not change those obligations. See YouTube Terms of Service and YouTube live streaming policies and restrictions.

Common failures and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | Wrong server URL or key, live access not activated, or connection failure. | Confirm live-stream eligibility and activation; copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room; check FFmpeg logs and outbound connectivity. Reset and replace the key if it may have been exposed. |
| The stream connects but YouTube reports unstable quality | Insufficient sustained outbound capacity, excess competing traffic, or provider egress limits. | Measure from the VPS, preserve the recommended 20% headroom, check transfer limits, and lower the selected output bitrate if capacity cannot sustain it. |
| FFmpeg exits and the feed stops | Process failure, missing source file, or a VPS/network interruption. | Inspect persisted logs and file availability, enable restart-on-failure in a process supervisor, and test that the restarted session is visible in YouTube Studio. Restarting alone does not ensure seamless continuity. |
| Video or audio is rejected or looks/sounds wrong | Output parameters do not match the selected profile or supported codec settings. | Check YouTube’s current settings for the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and audio; verify the source and encoder configuration, then repeat a private or unlisted test. |
| A long stream has no complete replay | A session exceeded 12 hours and may not have been captured. | Keep an independent recording and split the schedule into sessions under 12 hours if automatic archive availability matters. |
