Neither choice alone configures a YouTube Live stream: the output must also meet the requirements of the ingest protocol you selected.
What the two methods do
Concat demuxer: sequence packets before decoding
A demuxer reads media packets from input files. The concat demuxer sequences suitable files at that stage, so FFmpeg may be able to copy the encoded streams into the output without decoding and re-encoding them. This is the route to evaluate when preserving the existing audio and video encodings matters. It is not a guarantee that arbitrary files can be joined this way; compatibility depends on the actual sources. FFmpeg describes the demuxer as an option for avoiding re-encoding when the format does not support file-level concatenation. FFmpeg FAQ.
Concat filter: join decoded media for processing
A filter works on decoded media. FFmpeg’s concat filter is the documented choice when re-encoding is needed. Use it in -filter_complex when the graph cannot be expressed as a simple linear filter chain—for example, when it has multiple inputs or outputs. A complex graph can also combine concatenation with transformations such as scaling or overlays. Processing the media this way generally means encoding the affected streams for output. See FFmpeg’s complex filtergraph documentation and concat FAQ.
Choose based on the files and the work they need
| Situation | Route to evaluate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Inputs are suitable for concatenation, and you do not need to transform the media | Concat demuxer, with stream copy if it works for the sources | It can avoid re-encoding. Check the actual files and test the intended output; compatibility is not universal. |
| You need to re-encode, normalize clips, or apply filters | Concat filter in -filter_complex |
FFmpeg recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed; a complex graph can connect multiple inputs and processing steps. |
| You are sending the result to YouTube | Either media-processing route, followed by output suitable for the selected ingest protocol | The concat method does not determine protocol packaging or prove that the finished stream meets YouTube’s ingest requirements. |
Evaluate a loop before choosing
- Inspect the source clips. Check the actual video and audio streams, their formats, and whether the files are suitable to sequence without conversion. Do not assume that files with familiar extensions or similar appearance can be stream-copied together.
- Decide whether processing is required. If the clips already meet your output needs and preserving their encoded streams is the priority, evaluate the concat demuxer. If they need standardization, scaling, overlays, or another filter, plan on a concat filter graph and encoding the processed result.
- Identify the YouTube ingest protocol. Confirm the current requirements for that protocol, then validate the finished output against them. A concat method is only one part of the pipeline.
- Test the actual sequence and output. Run a representative loop using the files and settings you intend to use. Check that the result plays across clip boundaries, includes the expected audio, and is accepted by the selected ingest setup before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
There is no single command that is correct for every loop: source compatibility, necessary transformations, ingest protocol, and installed FFmpeg version all affect the implementation. In particular, a command that stream-copies one set of clips is not evidence that unrelated files will work the same way.

YouTube Live requirements depend on ingest protocol
YouTube’s cited HLS guidance applies specifically to HLS ingestion, not to every YouTube Live method. For HLS, YouTube lists muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, and a closed GOP; the guide supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Those constraints concern the HLS output and do not select between FFmpeg’s concat approaches. Both routes may precede a compliant HLS output, but you still need to validate the packaging and media. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.
Do not apply that HLS list as an assumed RTMP profile. The sources cited here do not establish a complete set of RTMP settings. Check the current YouTube instructions for the protocol you will actually use.
