To clean install a graphics driver, first identify your exact GPU and download the matching driver, then use the GPU maker’s clean-install option and restart. For a routine reinstall, start with that built-in option; use a separate cleanup utility only when a normal install fails or you have reason to suspect driver corruption. A clean install can help address driver-related symptoms, but it is not a guaranteed fix for dropped frames or encoding lag.
Before you start
A clean driver installation replaces display-driver software; it is not a clean installation of Windows and should not remove your personal files. Microsoft warns that reinstalling Windows from installation media is a separate procedure that can remove files, apps, and settings: Windows reinstall options.
- Identify the GPU. Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. A computer may list more than one adapter, so note the model you intend to use. Microsoft explains how to identify the display adapter.
- Check the Windows version and download the matching driver. Prefer the GPU maker’s package for the exact model. On a laptop or branded PC, check the computer maker’s support page too: it may provide a customized package. Intel specifically recommends checking with the computer manufacturer because its driver may include customizations: Intel clean-install guidance.
- Save work and close applications. Close games, streaming software, browsers, video players, and monitoring or tuning utilities. NVIDIA notes that open applications, including GPU monitoring or tuning tools and 3D-accelerated apps, can interfere with its installation; Windows Update activity can also disrupt it.
- Keep the downloaded installer available. Do not remove the existing driver before you have the replacement package ready.
Choose the clean-install method

NVIDIA: use Custom installation
- Download the matching NVIDIA Game Ready Driver for your GPU from NVIDIA’s driver download page.
- Close open applications, then run the installer as administrator.
- Choose Custom (Advanced) and enable Perform a clean installation.
- Finish setup and restart the PC.
NVIDIA’s cited manual procedure addresses a failed NVIDIA App driver installation, and it notes that Windows Update can interfere. Microsoft Defender can remain enabled; do not treat advice about pausing aggressive third-party scanning in that specific support procedure as a general instruction to disable security software. Intel: use the clean-install checkbox, or follow the manual fallback
Installer option
- Identify the Intel graphics product and download its matching driver package. If this is an OEM laptop or PC, check the system maker’s driver first.
- Run the Intel installer and select its clean-install checkbox if offered.
- Complete the installation and restart if prompted.
Intel says its clean installation removes old drivers, restores Intel settings to defaults, and clears the shader cache. The cited Intel guide was last reviewed September 9, 2026, and specifies a Windows 10 64-bit environment; follow the current package’s instructions for your Windows version. Manual fallback
- Download the correct Intel package before removing the current driver.
- Disconnect from the internet to reduce the chance that Windows automatically installs a driver during removal.
- In Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the Intel graphics device, and choose Uninstall device. Select Delete the driver software for this device if that option appears.
- Restart. Windows may temporarily show Microsoft Basic Display Adapter or Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.
- Run the downloaded Intel installer, complete setup, and restart if requested. Reconnect to the internet afterward.
Intel’s generic package may differ from an OEM-customized driver, so use the computer maker’s package if the generic one is unsuitable for your system.
AMD Radeon: use Radeon Software or the Cleanup Utility
Radeon Software Clean Install
- Start the Radeon Software installer for the correct GPU.
- If it detects an existing version and offers Clean Install on the Custom Install screen, select it and proceed with the installation.
- Restart if directed.
AMD says this option attempts to remove detected Radeon Software and AMD drivers before installing the selected components and may help with common corrupted-install problems. Its trade-off: Device Manager’s rollback to the previous driver is prevented. See AMD Radeon install guidance.

AMD Cleanup Utility for a deeper cleanup
- Download AMD Cleanup Utility from AMD’s support page.
- Run the utility; AMD recommends Safe Mode for best results.
- Allow it to complete cleanup, then reboot so the changes take effect.
- Install the correct Radeon driver package and restart if the installer requests it.
The utility removes AMD graphics and audio driver software, but does not remove or modify AMD chipset drivers. AMD says a brief display flicker or blank screen during cleanup is normal and that the utility creates a System Restore Point before cleanup. It supports Windows 7 and later according to AMD’s page, last updated September 29, 2025.
Choose the Radeon installation type for your use
If you rely on Radeon’s own recording or streaming controls, check which software components your installer includes. AMD’s installation-type page describes Full installation as including gaming, recording, streaming, and performance-tuning features; Minimal and Driver Only omit some or all controls. The examples on that page are based on Adrenalin 21.4.1, so verify the current installer’s labels and features rather than assuming they are unchanged: AMD installation types.

Verify the driver and test the streaming symptom
- Restart when the installer or cleanup utility requests it.
- Open Device Manager → Display adapters and confirm the intended GPU appears rather than only a generic adapter.
- Run the same game or content, output resolution and frame rate, encoder, and streaming-app settings you used before the change. Compare the result under the same conditions.
The cited vendor and Microsoft sources document driver installation and display troubleshooting, not a measured streaming-performance improvement from clean installation. If a new driver makes things worse, consider the vendor’s supported rollback path or the PC maker’s package; remember that AMD’s Radeon Clean Install option removes Device Manager’s rollback route.
Troubleshooting common problems
- The installer fails or will not start: Close games, browsers, streaming tools, monitoring utilities, and other GPU-accelerated applications, then retry. NVIDIA also notes that Windows Update activity may disrupt its installation.
- The PC shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter after removal: This can be an expected temporary state during Intel’s manual removal procedure. Install the previously downloaded Intel package and restart.
- The clean-install option is missing: Confirm you downloaded the correct vendor package for your GPU and Windows version. Intel documents manual removal as a fallback when its clean-install option is unavailable; do not assume every vendor installer offers the same choices.
- The AMD cleanup screen flickers or goes briefly blank: AMD describes this as normal during Cleanup Utility operation. Let the process finish and reboot as directed.
- The display still flickers: Microsoft suggests checking whether Task Manager flickers too; that comparison can help distinguish display-driver issues from incompatible apps. Its troubleshooting page lists updating, rolling back, or uninstalling a display driver as options: Microsoft screen-flicker troubleshooting.
- Streaming still drops frames or lags: A clean driver install alone is not established as a fix. Compare the same workload and settings before and after, and investigate the game, encoder, streaming application, and network separately if symptoms remain.
