To stream with FFmpeg over Airtel broadband, copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then send a compatible video stream to that destination. Choose a bitrate your measured, sustained upload connection can handle with headroom; an Airtel plan name alone cannot tell you what your connection will sustain. The steps below use an H.264/AAC file-stream example and explain how to test it before relying on it live.
What you need before streaming
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live and a stream created or scheduled in Live Control Room.
- FFmpeg installed with the encoders and protocol support your chosen output requires. Build options vary, so check your installation rather than assuming every FFmpeg package includes the same encoders.
- A recording to stream, or a capture device with operating-system-specific input arguments if you are streaming a camera or gameplay capture. The command below is for a video file.
- A stable outbound connection. Airtel provides broadband services in India, but its service information does not establish the upload rate or stability of your individual plan, location, router, or Wi-Fi connection. Measure the connection you will actually use.
YouTube supports encoder ingestion using RTMP or RTMPS. Prefer the exact ingest destination shown in Live Control Room; YouTube recommends RTMPS where available. The server URL and stream key are separate values in the encoder setup flow. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live stream settings.
1. Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room.
- Create or select the scheduled or live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the displayed URL exactly; do not assume every channel or stream uses an identical destination.
- Keep the key private. Do not put it in a public script repository, screenshot, terminal recording, or support post. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update FFmpeg with the replacement.

2. Measure Airtel upload capacity and set headroom
Run an upload speed test from the same computer and network path you will use for FFmpeg, preferably at a time when your household or office network is typically busy. Upload capacity matters here, not the download number advertised most prominently by a speed test. YouTube says the available upload rate must exceed the total stream bitrate and recommends leaving 20% spare capacity. Other people and devices sharing your connection also consume that capacity. Use a sustained, reliable result rather than a brief peak. If other users are active, include their usage in your practical margin. If you are on Wi-Fi, test from the computer’s actual streaming location. Temporarily testing over Ethernet, if available, can help distinguish a Wi-Fi problem from an upstream capacity or stability issue; it is optional and cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your connection.
3. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate together
The figures below are YouTube’s current H.264 live guidance, shown as minimum and recommended video bitrate. They are not Airtel plan guarantees, and the minimum is not a promise of stable service. Leave upload headroom above the bitrate you send. YouTube’s figures differ by codec, so do not apply H.264 values to AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.

For a conventional FFmpeg workflow, H.264 video and AAC audio are a practical baseline if your FFmpeg build supports them. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval must not exceed four seconds. Pick a profile that both the encoder hardware and measured upload can sustain rather than choosing solely by the speed tier on an Airtel bill.
4. Send a video file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation shows the general pattern for sending a file in real time to an RTMP destination with FLV output. The command below adapts that pattern to YouTube and sets an H.264/AAC output for a 30 fps source:

In practice, that may mean combining the supplied ingest URL and key in the format expected by the destination; do not leave the example placeholder in the command. Protect the key as you would a password.
-rereads a file at its native rate instead of sending it as fast as possible; FFmpeg documents this real-time file-output pattern.-c:v libx264selects the x264 H.264 encoder if it is present in your build.-preset veryfasttrades some compression efficiency for lower encoding workload; if the computer cannot encode in real time, reduce output demands or use an available compatible encoder.-b:v 5Mand-maxrate 5Mset a 5 Mbps video target and ceiling in this example. That aligns with YouTube’s stated H.264 minimum for 1080p30, not its recommended 14 Mbps. Do not use it as a universal 1080p setting; choose a bitrate for your resolution and connection.-bufsize 10Msets the encoder’s rate-control buffer.-r 30requests 30 fps. Check the source and actual output rather than assuming the requested rate guarantees the result.-g 60 -keyint_min 60requests a 60-frame GOP for 30 fps, or roughly two seconds. For another frame rate, adjust the GOP to preserve a roughly two-second interval and verify the encoded output.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes AAC audio at the example bitrate and sample rate. Ensure the input actually contains the audio you want to send.-f flvselects the container used in FFmpeg’s documented RTMP example.

If the source is already encoded to a format and profile suitable for YouTube, stream-copying may avoid transcoding, but only after checking its video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. The file example cannot be pasted unchanged for a live camera or gameplay capture: the input syntax depends on the operating system and device. The output still needs compatible codecs and settings, the correct YouTube destination, and a bitrate within available upload capacity.

- When possible, run a private or unlisted test stream before a public broadcast.
- Use representative motion and audio, not just a static image or silent clip. YouTube recommends testing with conditions similar to the real stream.
- Check Live Control Room for detected resolution and frame rate, stream health, and diagnostic messages.
- Keep FFmpeg’s output visible during the test so you can spot encoder errors, connection failures, or unexpected output behavior.
- During the event, watch stream health and respond to diagnostics; a speed test at one moment cannot guarantee stable upload throughout the broadcast.

Troubleshooting: common FFmpeg and YouTube ingest problems

| YouTube does not detect the stream | Confirm the stream is active in Live Control Room; check that the server URL and stream key were copied correctly and belong to the selected stream. Replace a key if it was reset or exposed. |

Do not assume an ingest failure is Airtel-specific: the available evidence does not establish Airtel-specific FFmpeg failure modes. Check the key and URL, local FFmpeg build, router or firewall path, sustained upload, and YouTube’s diagnostics in that order.
