To share a moment from a YouTube video, open it, select More > Clip, choose a 5–60-second segment, title it, and share its link. To publish a separate excerpt from your own video, use YouTube Studio’s clip workflow or make a Short instead. Those options have different steps and length limits.
Choose the right kind of YouTube clip
“YouTube clip” can mean a viewer-made link to a moment in an existing video, or a new video upload made from an excerpt. A viewer Clip loops on the original video’s watch page; it does not create a standalone edit. A Studio video clip or a Short is a separate upload.

Make and share a viewer Clip
- Sign in to YouTube and open the video you want to clip.
- Select More > Clip. If Clip is unavailable, this video may not support viewer Clips.
- Enter a title of up to 140 characters.
- Use the selection slider to choose a segment between 5 and 60 seconds.
- Select Share clip, then copy the link or use an available sharing option, such as embedding or sharing by email or social platform.
The Clip loops from the original video’s watch page. Someone with the Clip link can watch it only if they can access the original video. If the source is deleted, made private, or violates YouTube’s Community Guidelines, its Clips can be removed; Clips from unlisted videos remain available.

- In YouTube Studio, open Content > Videos and select the uploaded video.
- Open Clips and Shorts, then choose Create clip or Short > Video clip.
- Select the excerpt by choosing transcript text and confirming, or enter or set start and end timestamps in the timeline editor.
- Preview the selection. If the option is available and useful, add an intro or outro video.
- Choose Create draft, then finish the upload flow. YouTube recommends adding a link to the source video in the new clip’s description.
The workflow can use the video transcript for selection and captions in the Short workflow. Available automatic captions can be styled or disabled in preview. AI suggestions and outlines are available only in select countries and languages; availability can vary, so check what appears in your Studio account.
Make a Short from your own video in the mobile app
- In the YouTube mobile app, open the watch page for your own eligible public long-form video.
- Tap Remix > Edit into a Short.
- Choose up to 60 seconds, add text or filters if desired, and upload.
A Short made this way links back to the original video. This option is not available for private or unlisted videos, or videos with third-party copyright claims. If you do not see it, check the video’s Shorts remixing or sampling setting in Studio.

Upload a finished Short from a computer
If you have already edited the excerpt into a video file, upload it through YouTube Studio. YouTube’s computer-upload guidance allows Shorts up to 3 minutes when the video is square or vertical. This is a general upload allowance; it is not the same as the 60-second maximum for selecting a segment through Edit into a Short on mobile.
Check copyright before publishing
Before uploading a Short, make sure any copyright-protected material in it is approved for use. YouTube warns that a valid copyright takedown can remove a Short and may result in a copyright strike. A segment being short or coming from a video you uploaded does not by itself establish that every included song, clip, or other protected material is cleared for reuse.

Troubleshoot missing options and sharing problems
- You cannot find “Clip” on a video: Viewer Clips are for supported videos. If the control is not available, you may not be able to create a viewer Clip for that video.
- “Edit into a Short” is missing: Confirm you are using the mobile app on your own public long-form video. Private and unlisted videos, and videos with third-party copyright claims, are not eligible for this workflow. Check the video’s Shorts remixing or sampling setting in Studio.
- Your viewer Clip does not play for someone else: The recipient must be able to access the original video. A Clip link does not bypass the source video’s access or availability.
- A Clip disappears: Clips can be removed if the original is deleted or made private, or if it violates Community Guidelines.
- You cannot select the excerpt you want: In Studio, use transcript text if available or set the start and end timestamps in the timeline editor, then preview the result before creating the draft.
