You can livestream a wedding on YouTube with a phone, a computer webcam, or an encoder connected to cameras and microphones. First make sure the channel is eligible, then choose who can watch, test the setup at the venue, and assign someone other than the couple to monitor the broadcast. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary—but a live ceremony has no second take, so rehearsal, clear audio, and a tested connection matter.
Can you livestream your wedding on YouTube?
Yes, if the channel is eligible and live streaming has been activated. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance, accessed in 2026, says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16 years old. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the wedding day.
Choose the channel owner and operator early. The person responsible should be able to access the channel, set the event’s visibility, start the stream, and respond if something goes wrong. Keep the couple’s personal account credentials private where possible; use a trusted operator who has the access needed to run the event.
Mobile streaming has an extra eligibility check
YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements include at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no recent live-streaming restrictions, and live streaming activated. If the channel has 50 to 999 subscribers, YouTube may limit the mobile audience size and set the archive to private by default. YouTube does not publish a specific viewer cap in the guidance cited here, so do not plan around a promised number.

Choose a streaming method that fits the ceremony
| Method | Best fit | What you need to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | A simple, single-phone viewpoint when the channel meets mobile eligibility requirements. | Schedule and set visibility in the YouTube app. Stabilize the phone and rehearse the actual cellular or Wi-Fi connection at the venue. |
| Webcam | A straightforward computer-based stream with a webcam and microphone. | Select the intended camera and microphone in YouTube, then check framing and sound from another device. |
| Encoder | A production using external cameras or microphones, audio mixing, multiple angles, or more control over the output. | Connect the equipment to an encoder, configure the stream key, and allow extra setup and monitoring time. |
YouTube describes encoder streaming as an option for more advanced productions and supports external audio and video equipment through that workflow. It is not a requirement for an ordinary ceremony. Choose based on the venue, the audio you need, the available internet connection, and the operator’s experience. YouTube’s own advice is that expensive equipment is not necessary; what you have at hand may be enough.
Schedule the event and decide who can watch
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room to create or schedule the event. Interface labels can change, so confirm the current Studio layout before the wedding.
- Choose the visibility setting before sending the link. YouTube offers public, unlisted, and private streams.
- Copy the event link and send it to guests with the start time and a note about how to watch. For a scheduled stream, subscribers may see it as upcoming and choose to receive a reminder.
- If you use an encoder, copy the stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not post or message it publicly, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
Public, unlisted, or private?
- Public: broadly viewable and discoverable. Use it if you want anyone to be able to find and watch the ceremony.
- Unlisted: viewers can watch through the link. This is convenient for invited guests, but the link can be forwarded; it is not password protection or a guest-by-guest invitation gate.
- Private: access is restricted. If you need tighter control than an unlisted link offers, choose private and confirm in advance how your invited guests will be granted access.
YouTube allows streamers to edit privacy settings. Set the intended access before distributing the link, and check it again in Studio rather than assuming a prior setting carried over.
Rehearse at the wedding venue
Run an unlisted test from the place the stream will originate, using the actual phone or computer, camera position, microphone or audio feed, internet connection, and intended settings. YouTube recommends unlisted test streams and checking the preview and event on watch pages and mobile. Ask someone outside the operator’s account to open the test link so you know guests can access it.

- Set up the camera where it will be during the ceremony. Check that the officiant and couple will remain in frame, and that guests or decorations will not block the view.
- Listen to the test on a separate device with headphones. Confirm that speech is intelligible and not overwhelmed by room noise, music, or an unsuitable sound-system feed.
- Check the image and sound on a phone as well as the operator’s screen. Verify that the event page and link open for someone who is not signed into the channel account.
- Walk through what the operator will do if the camera shifts, the audio disappears, or the connection becomes unstable. Keep a fallback plan, such as continuing with a simpler camera and microphone arrangement.
For encoder streams, YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before the event and beginning to send the encoder feed at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Check the Live Control Room preview before making the event live, keep monitoring the outgoing audio and video, and verify that any local recording file is growing if you are making one. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees against venue or equipment failure.

For a livestream, the connection sending the picture matters: upload capacity is not the same as download speed. Test upload speed at the exact location where the phone or computer will be used. YouTube recommends outbound bandwidth equal to the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate plus 20%. Use the bitrate values selected for your stream when applying that formula; the cited guidance does not establish one universal bitrate for every wedding setup.
- For a computer stream, YouTube recommends Ethernet. If you must use Wi-Fi or mobile data, rehearse on that same connection at the venue rather than relying on a venue’s advertised speed.
- For a phone shot, a phone holder or tripod can help keep framing steady, but it is optional, not a YouTube requirement. A phone and equipment you already own may be enough.
- For venue sound, have a responsible operator confirm that the sound-system feed is intelligible and that the encoder is receiving the intended source. A signal being connected does not by itself confirm that the right microphone or mix is being sent.
YouTube’s filming guidance makes the practical distinction clear: “The difference between live streaming and filming a video is that with live streaming you cannot have multiple takes.” Use the rehearsal to catch avoidable problems before guests arrive.

Check music permissions before the ceremony
Music can interrupt or restrict a live broadcast. YouTube lists copyright strikes on an active stream and matches to another copyrighted live broadcast among grounds for live-streaming restrictions. A song being played at the venue, or performed by a band, does not establish that the couple has permission to include it in a YouTube livestream. Ask the venue, DJ or band, and relevant rights holders about livestream permission; requirements depend on the music and circumstances, and YouTube’s help guidance does not settle licensing questions for a particular couple or jurisdiction.
Plan a music-free fallback if the stream is interrupted—for example, have the operator continue with the ceremony audio only if that is appropriate and permitted. This is practical caution, not legal advice.
Monitor the broadcast and check the replay afterward
Assign a trusted person who is not getting married to watch the outgoing stream. They can check whether the image stays framed, speech remains audible, and the connection is still sending video while the couple focuses on the ceremony. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video; assigning a dedicated helper is a practical way to do that.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
After the ceremony, confirm that the stream has ended and inspect the archive and its privacy setting in YouTube Studio. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The mobile workflow creates an archive and lets the creator change its privacy or delete it. Archive availability and controls can change, so check the current Studio view after the event rather than assuming the replay is public, private, or retained as intended.
YouTube offers DVR so viewers can pause or rewind during a stream. Its guidance notes that lower latency may increase buffering; low latency matters most when audience interaction is important. For a wedding ceremony, steady playback may matter more than near-instant chat.

| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Live streaming is unavailable on the channel | The channel is not verified, has a recent restriction, does not meet mobile requirements, or first-time activation is still pending. | Check channel eligibility and activate live streaming well before the event; allow up to 24 hours for first activation. If streaming from mobile, check the separate subscriber threshold. |
| Guests cannot open the event | The event is private, the wrong link was sent, or guests do not have the access required by the selected privacy setting. | Test the exact link while signed out or using someone outside the operator’s account. Confirm visibility and, for private streams, how invited guests receive access. |
| The picture buffers or drops | Upload capacity at the venue is insufficient or unstable for the stream settings. | Test at the stream location and on the actual connection. Use Ethernet for a computer stream where possible; otherwise rehearse on the intended Wi-Fi or mobile connection and prepare a simpler fallback. |
| Speech is too quiet, distorted, or missing | The wrong microphone or sound-system feed is selected, the source is too far away, or the audio mix is unsuitable. | Listen to a test on another device and have the operator verify the intended input and intelligibility before guests join. |
| The stream is interrupted when music plays | A copyright restriction or match may affect the live broadcast. | Confirm permissions with the relevant parties in advance and prepare a music-free fallback. Do not assume that venue playback or a live performance is automatically cleared for livestreaming. |
