First check which OBS counter is rising: network dropped frames usually point to an unstable connection or a bitrate your upload cannot sustain; rendering lag or encoding lag points to local GPU or encoder load. Those are different problems, so a mini PC is not automatically the cause—and lowering graphics settings will not repair an unstable network.
Identify which frames OBS is dropping
In OBS, check the Stats window during the stream or test. Look at the network dropped-frames counter separately from rendering and encoding lag. Also preserve the OBS log for the affected session; it can help distinguish a connection problem from local performance trouble.
- Network dropped frames: OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to YouTube’s ingest server at the configured bitrate. OBS may drop frames to avoid buffering, and a high number can disconnect the stream.
- Rendering lag: OBS is not compositing frames quickly enough, often because the GPU is saturated.
- Encoding lag: The selected encoder cannot encode frames quickly enough under the current workload.
OBS Project says it is extremely unlikely that OBS Studio itself causes network dropped frames. A dropped-frame counter alone also does not prove that the mini PC is underpowered.
Fix network dropped frames first
1. Set a bitrate the connection can sustain
A speed-test peak is not the same as dependable upload capacity during a live stream. OBS’s 2024-09-30 connection guide suggests starting at about 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee—especially if upload speed fluctuates or other devices share the connection.

In OBS, open Settings → Output, select Advanced output mode if needed, and adjust the streaming video bitrate. Run a representative YouTube test with similar motion and audio to the intended stream, then monitor OBS’s network counter and YouTube’s stream health. If drops continue, lower the bitrate and test again.
YouTube’s current guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, lists these H.264 recommendations:

These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that your connection can sustain the upper end. Choose a value that remains stable in testing rather than maximizing quality on paper.
2. Test wired Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi
If the mini PC is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router by Ethernet and repeat the same test. OBS recommends wired networking for streaming because Wi-Fi can be unstable. Compare the results under otherwise similar conditions. A Cat6 cable is relevant only if you need a cable to make that wired test; it cannot resolve ISP congestion, a misconfigured stream, or another fault elsewhere in the network path.

3. Try OBS’s Windows network options
In OBS on Windows, open Settings → Advanced → Network. Try the following targeted changes one at a time, testing after each:
- Enable Network Optimizations.
- Enable TCP pacing.
- Leave Bind to IP set to Default.
- If the problem persists, test IPv4 Only. If it does not help, restore the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.
4. Check software that can interfere with the connection
OBS lists VPNs, firewall or antivirus software, network-prioritization utilities, and outdated network drivers among possible causes of connection trouble. Examples of bundled network utilities include Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software.

- Test whether a VPN or network-prioritization utility is affecting the stream, changing one thing at a time.
- Keep security software enabled where possible. If a careful test confirms that a firewall or antivirus is interfering, add an OBS exception and re-enable the security software rather than leaving protection off.
- Check for an updated network-adapter driver from the mini PC or adapter manufacturer.
5. Check the rest of the network path
Restart the modem or router if appropriate, and inspect the Ethernet cable, router, network adapter, switches, and extenders. Any of these may contribute to a connection problem. If network drops continue after local checks, contact your ISP with the approximate times, OBS logs, and details of the bitrate and connection tests you ran.
6. Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS’s Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) option can lower bitrate during congestion and may reduce frame loss. It does not fix the underlying connection problem, and the stream’s picture quality can drop as bitrate is reduced. Use it when continuity matters more than maintaining a fixed quality, not as a substitute for diagnosing the connection.

If rendering or encoding lag is rising
These steps address local OBS workload, not network dropped frames. If the network counter is the one rising, return to the connection checks above.
- Lower output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working reliably, test 30 fps. Lowering resolution or frame rate reduces the work OBS must perform but also changes stream quality or smoothness.
- Simplify scenes. Remove sources you do not need, and reduce costly browser sources, filters, and other scene effects.
- Check other GPU use. Close or limit other programs using the GPU, then repeat the test.
- Review the OBS log. Compare a representative test with the Stats counters to confirm whether local rendering or encoding is still behind.
Do not replace the mini PC or buy graphics hardware based only on the fact that frames are dropping. The cause depends on the counter, OBS log, scene load, connection stability, and stream-health information.
Check the YouTube output settings during a test
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends CBR, supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, and allows up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; it also recommends RTMPS. In OBS, confirm the encoder and keyframe settings in Settings → Output and the stream service and server settings in Settings → Stream. The appropriate bitrate still depends on stable upload capacity, not only the selected resolution.
Before a live event, test with movement and audio comparable to the real stream and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages. If the test shows network drops, revisit bitrate and connection stability; if OBS shows rendering or encoding lag, focus on local workload.
