YouTube says replay is on by default for live-stream archives, but a stream marked “made for kids” cannot have live chat, and editing the archive in YouTube’s video editor removes chat replay. For a stream that runs continuously, verify the finished archive and replay on YouTube; an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast is not a guarantee of a particular archive outcome.
What Live chat replay does—and what it does not do
Live chat replay displays the conversation as it appeared during the broadcast alongside the finished stream archive. It is an archive feature, not a way to add chat to a video that was uploaded as an ordinary recording. YouTube describes replay as available on live-stream archives. YouTube’s Live chat help explains the feature and its archive settings.
- Live chat replay: Shows the live conversation in sync with the archived broadcast after it ends.
- DVR: Lets viewers pause and rewind while the broadcast is still live. It does not mean the archive will retain chat replay.
- Archive: The saved video after a broadcast ends. Archive availability is a separate consideration from replay and DVR.
YouTube warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. That limitation concerns rewinding during a live stream; it does not establish whether a 24/7 broadcast will produce an archive with chat replay. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Prepare the prerecorded 24/7 broadcast
The recording still has to reach YouTube as a live broadcast. Choose a playback method, then configure the YouTube live event and its chat. The setup method does not override YouTube’s archive behavior.

Choose local playback or cloud playout
With a local encoder, a computer plays and sends a looping video or playlist to YouTube; the computer, media, network connection, and streaming process must remain available for the broadcast to continue. A cloud playout service runs the stream process in the provider’s environment instead. That can avoid maintaining a dedicated streaming computer, but the creator still depends on the provider’s actual capabilities and operating conditions. Neither approach guarantees that YouTube will archive a single indefinitely running broadcast with replay.
For a local workflow, a computer capable of running the encoder is needed. A dedicated mini PC is optional, not a YouTube requirement. The workflow categories are described in StreamNeo’s guide to livestreaming prerecorded videos on YouTube 24/7; they are not a tested performance comparison.

Create or configure the live event
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the live event you will use for the prerecorded broadcast.
- Configure the event’s live chat and check that it is available. YouTube says chat is unavailable when a stream is designated as made for kids. See YouTube’s live-chat guidance.
- Start the prerecorded feed as a live broadcast using your chosen playback method.
Keep Live chat replay enabled on the archive
YouTube says Live chat replay is on by default for live streams. For an individual archive, you can check its setting in Studio:
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Select Live.
- Choose the archived stream and open its Customization tab.
- Check that Live chat replay is selected. If it is cleared, the archive will not show chat replay.
YouTube documents these archive controls in its Live chat help. Avoid editing the archived stream in YouTube’s video editor if replay matters: YouTube says streams edited there will not have chat replay.

Check the viewer experience on YouTube
After the broadcast has ended and the archive is available, open the video’s YouTube watch page and check that the replay appears with the video. YouTube says live chat is available on watch pages, not in embedded players. Do not promise viewers that chat replay will be visible in an embed. YouTube’s live-chat viewing guidance covers where chat is available.
For a genuinely continuous broadcast, distinguish one uninterrupted event from a sequence of shorter broadcasts. If a completed archive is important, plan when and how broadcasts will end, then verify the resulting archive and replay on the actual watch page. YouTube’s published DVR guidance addresses the long-stream rewind limitation, not a guarantee that an indefinitely running stream will produce a replay-enabled archive. The YouTube Live API also describes how archive and DVR settings affect immediate playback availability after a broadcast ends; for that documented condition, both archive and DVR must be enabled.
