To resume a YouTube stream after a Windows restart, configure OBS to open the right profile and start streaming when the correct Windows user logs in, then verify the feed in YouTube Live Control Room. A scheduled launch is only one link in the chain: Windows must reach the right session, OBS must have working media and network access, and YouTube must accept the stream. It does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast or preserve the same live event.
What a restart-safe stream requires
For a self-hosted setup, the chain is Windows startup, the streaming user’s session, OBS opening the intended profile and scene collection, available media and devices, and a valid feed reaching the intended YouTube stream. Each part can fail independently, so test the entire chain rather than assuming that an OBS launch means the channel is live.
YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and matching stream key. YouTube describes the key as a password-like credential; keep it private, and update OBS if you reset a compromised key. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and encoder setup instructions.
Configure YouTube and OBS before automating
- Choose the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, select or create a custom stream key and note the matching server URL and key for OBS. A reusable custom key can preserve your encoder configuration between sessions. Treat it like a password; if it is exposed, reset it and replace it in OBS.
- Save the OBS setup you want to run. Select the intended profile and scene collection, then save them. Confirm that the required media sources, audio and video devices, and other inputs will still be available after a restart.
- Decide whether OBS should start streaming automatically. OBS documents the
--startstreaminglaunch parameter. Use it only if you want a scheduled OBS launch to begin broadcasting without an additional manual step. Launching OBS without that parameter opens the encoder but does not itself request that streaming begin. Consult the OBS launch-parameter documentation.
Before enabling automatic streaming, check that the saved scenes and sources are appropriate to broadcast unattended. OBS can only send what its configuration and available inputs provide.

Use Task Scheduler to launch OBS at user logon
- Open Task Scheduler in Windows and choose the option to create a task.
- Set the task to run for the Windows account used for streaming. Configure a logon trigger for that account. Microsoft distinguishes a user-logon trigger from a system-start trigger; the logon trigger waits for the specified user to log in. This is generally the relevant choice when OBS needs an interactive desktop session. See Microsoft’s Task Triggers documentation and Starting an Executable When a User Logs On.
- Add an action to start OBS. Point the action to the OBS executable and provide
--startstreamingas a launch parameter if you want the stream to begin automatically. Make sure OBS will open the saved profile and scene collection intended for this broadcast. - Choose the sign-in approach deliberately. A logon-triggered task will not run in the specified user’s session until that user logs in. If the PC must stream without anyone present to sign in, automatic sign-in may be considered separately, with its security and operational trade-offs. A scheduled task alone does not remove the need for the session OBS requires.
- Save the task, then perform a controlled restart test. Do not rely on the configuration until you have watched a restart and checked the resulting broadcast.
A system-start trigger and a logon trigger are not interchangeable for a desktop application: Windows can start before the streaming user’s session is ready. Microsoft documents both trigger types in its trigger reference.
Verify the broadcast after every test restart
- After Windows restarts and the streaming user logs in, confirm OBS opened with the intended profile and scene collection.
- Check that media sources and audio or video devices are available, and that the local preview shows the expected output.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check that an incoming feed appears and stream health is acceptable.
- Check the public watch page to confirm that the event is accessible to viewers.
YouTube recommends previewing the stream, monitoring stream health, and checking event accessibility. Its live streaming tips and encoder settings guidance describe testing and monitoring. For video quality, choose encoder settings and bitrate appropriate to your content and available network, then monitor the feed rather than assuming a saved configuration will work on every connection.

Plan around YouTube’s event lifecycle
A “24/7 stream” describes the intended service pattern, not a promise that one YouTube live event can run indefinitely. YouTube’s encoder instructions state: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Plan how the stream or event will be restarted or recreated around YouTube’s lifecycle, and verify whether viewers can continue using the watch experience you intend. The platform documentation does not establish that every encoder reconnect after a Windows restart will preserve the same event or watch page. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Troubleshoot a stream that does not resume
- OBS does not open: Check that the task is enabled, its action points to the correct OBS executable, and the configured user has logged in. A startup trigger may run before an interactive desktop session is available.
- OBS opens but does not go live: Check whether the task action includes
--startstreamingif automatic streaming is intended. Confirm that OBS opened the expected profile and that its connection settings are present. - The preview is blank or incomplete: Check the selected scene, media sources, and connected audio or video devices. A restart can expose unavailable files or devices that were present during setup.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check the server URL and matching stream key in OBS. If the key was reset or may be compromised, retrieve the current key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends retrieving the stream key and updating the encoder when needed.
- The feed connects but is unstable: Check YouTube’s stream-health status, encoder settings, and the network connection. YouTube recommends testing encoder behavior and choosing bitrate based on the available network; automatic launch cannot repair a network or power outage.
- The watch page or event changes: Check whether the event needs to be restarted or recreated in light of YouTube’s under-12-hour archive behavior. Do not assume a reconnect will retain the same event or watch page.
Also account for Windows update restarts, power loss, internet outages, and any human sign-in requirement. Scheduled launch helps only when Windows reaches the right session, OBS has valid content, power and network are available, and YouTube accepts the incoming feed.
