You can use OBS Studio’s VLC video source to loop a playlist, but looping alone does not mean an old PC can decode the videos, render the scene, encode 4K at 60fps and upload continuously. Check all four limits before you rely on it: the files’ codecs, the PC’s decode and encode capabilities, sustained upload speed, and long-run stability. If the computer cannot keep up, a cloud loop removes the PC from the streaming path.
What has to work for a local 4K60 stream
A 4K60 playlist stream has several distinct stages. OBS must read and decode each file, composite the scene, encode the outgoing video, and send it to YouTube over a stable connection. A setting that helps one stage does not guarantee the others.
- Playlist: OBS can play and loop a VLC playlist, but this says nothing about whether the PC can process every media file smoothly.
- Decoding: The GPU must support hardware decoding for the source file’s codec if you want OBS to offload decoding. Otherwise decoding may add substantial CPU work.
- Encoding: A supported hardware encoder can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component; it does not solve decoding, scene-rendering or network limits.
- Upload: YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations are ingest targets, not an India-specific ISP threshold or a guarantee of viewer playback quality. Measure upload speed and test the actual stream.
- Continuity: A short successful test is not proof that the machine can stay stable unattended. Heat, dropped frames, encoder overload or an intermittent connection can interrupt a long broadcast.
Check YouTube’s 4K60 ingest settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends different bitrates according to the codec. Its settings guidance also recommends CBR, RTMPS where supported, frame rates up to 60fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. For 4K/2160p, the option to improve for low latency is not available.

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection can sustain them. Test upload—not download—and leave practical headroom for connection variation and other household use. Set up the playlist in OBS
- Check the media first. Note each file’s resolution, frame rate and codec. A mixed playlist can make an otherwise successful test misleading, so include representative files—especially the most demanding one—in your trial.
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC video source requires VLC to be installed. Add a VLC Video Source in OBS and add the files or playlist you want to play.
- Enable looping. In the source properties, enable Loop Playlist so playback restarts after the media items finish. This is a playback setting, not a performance setting.
- Test hardware decoding if available. In the VLC source properties, enable Use hardware decoding when available only if the GPU supports decoding the media format. If the option does not help or playback becomes unstable, test with it disabled and compare OBS performance.
- Choose an encoder the installed hardware actually exposes. In OBS output settings, select a supported hardware encoder if available. Encoder choices depend on the PC’s hardware and software; do not assume an older GPU supports AV1 or H.265 encoding just because YouTube accepts those formats.
- Configure the YouTube output. Use CBR, set the keyframe interval to two seconds (never over four), choose a supported frame rate up to 60fps, and use RTMPS if the encoder supports it. Set bitrate according to the outgoing codec and YouTube’s table above.
- Connect with the stream key carefully. Copy the stream key from YouTube Studio’s live control room into OBS’s stream settings. Treat it like a password: do not share it or show it on stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting again.
- Run a representative test. Use motion and audio similar to the real playlist. Watch OBS for rendering or encoding overload and dropped frames, and watch YouTube’s stream health for ingest problems. Keep the test running long enough to observe temperatures and connection stability; a brief test cannot establish 24/7 reliability.

Check rights and YouTube live eligibility
Only include video and audio you have the rights or permission to stream. A playlist that repeats continuously is still a public broadcast: looping does not make copyrighted music, gameplay footage, or other material safe to use. YouTube may block, restrict or terminate a live stream based on rights or policy issues. Review the applicable YouTube rules and resolve any account-specific live-stream restrictions in YouTube Studio before scheduling a long broadcast.

Diagnose common failures

Can every old PC run a 4K60 YouTube playlist in OBS?
No. It depends on the source files, supported decoding and encoding hardware, scene load, upload stability and sustained operation. Test the specific PC and media rather than relying on age or a single hardware feature.
Does a 35 Mbps connection meet YouTube’s 4K60 recommendation?
That is YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate for AV1/H.265 4K60, not H.264, for which YouTube recommends 50 Mbps. You also need a stable upload and an encoder that can sustain the chosen settings.
