For a 1080p60 gaming stream to YouTube Live, start with H.264, CBR, a 17 Mbps video bitrate, a 2-second keyframe interval and RTMPS. For 1080p30, start at 14 Mbps. Leave about 20% upload headroom, test with representative gameplay and audio, and check stream health before leaving the broadcast unattended. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that any particular PC or connection will run all night.
Recommended OBS settings for 1080p YouTube Live
Use these as a starting point for an SDR stream. YouTube’s recommendations vary by frame rate and codec; the H.264 figures below come from its encoder guidance as listed in 2026. The minimum bitrate is a floor, not the recommended target for quality.
| Setting | 1080p60 | 1080p30 |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1920 × 1080, progressive, 16:9 | 1920 × 1080, progressive, 16:9 |
| Video codec | H.264 | H.264 |
| Recommended video bitrate | 17 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| YouTube minimum video bitrate | 6 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| Rate control | CBR | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Transport | RTMPS | RTMPS |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; YouTube’s advanced recommendations list stereo, 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz | |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR where applicable | |
YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance also gives 12 Mbps for 1080p60 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30 when using AV1 or H.265. Use those figures only when your encoder and complete streaming workflow support the selected codec. If unsure, H.264 is the straightforward baseline in the table.
Set up the stream in OBS
OBS labels can vary slightly by version and operating system. In current desktop OBS, configure the output and video settings before connecting to YouTube. Use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings as the target rather than treating an OBS preset as universally best: performance depends on your game, encoder and PC.

- Set the canvas and output. In Settings → Video, set the base canvas to 1920 × 1080 and the output resolution to 1920 × 1080. Choose a 16:9 canvas and progressive output. Set the common FPS value to 60 for fast gameplay if your system and connection can sustain it; otherwise choose 30.
- Configure the live encoder. In Settings → Output, set Output Mode to Advanced, open the Streaming tab, and select an encoder that your system supports. Set rate control to CBR, bitrate to 17000 Kbps for 1080p60 or 14000 Kbps for 1080p30, and keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends these H.264 targets; the guidance does not establish a universal winning encoder or preset for every gaming PC.
- Set audio and color. In Settings → Audio, use stereo and 44.1 kHz if matching YouTube’s advanced recommendations. In Settings → Advanced, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit SDR for an SDR workflow. Choose AAC or MP3 audio encoding and 128 kbps stereo as the YouTube-listed audio recommendation.
- Connect YouTube securely. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and use RTMPS where available. Retrieve and enter the stream key in YouTube Studio’s live control room; treat the key like a password and do not show it in a recording or screenshot. The exact Studio controls can change, so follow YouTube’s current live setup screen.
- Run a representative test. Start a private or unlisted test if appropriate for your channel settings, and include the same kind of fast motion, scene changes and audio you expect overnight. Confirm YouTube receives a stable signal, inspect its stream-health feedback, and listen for clipping or missing sources before scheduling a long session.
Choose 1080p30 or 1080p60 based on the whole system
60 fps can make fast gameplay motion look smoother, but it needs more upload capacity at YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate and can add encoder load. 30 fps is a valid 1080p target when the PC or network cannot sustain the 60 fps setup reliably. Do not compensate for a struggling connection by choosing settings that exceed its real upload capacity.
YouTube’s minimum H.264 rates—6 Mbps for 1080p60 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30—are lower than its recommendations. Treat them as minimums, not equivalent quality targets. YouTube’s published figures are platform guidance; they do not establish a controlled comparison of gaming image quality across games, encoders or hardware.

Keep enough upload capacity for an overnight broadcast
Use upload speed, not download speed, when deciding whether your connection can carry the stream. YouTube says the stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% spare capacity. That headroom matters when other devices or applications share the connection.
For example, a 17 Mbps video stream plus audio and overhead needs more than 17 Mbps of dependable upload capacity; do not treat a speed-test result as a promise that the same rate will remain available all night. Pause large uploads and cloud backups, and test at the time and on the network you intend to use. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing, monitoring stream health and checking local archive files.

Understand what “VOD” means before recording
For this setup, “VOD” may mean either the replay YouTube retains after a live broadcast or a separate recording saved on your PC. The live feed and the local recording are different outputs; you do not need to make a local recording merely to configure the YouTube stream.
If you also want a local OBS recording
Set the recording output separately under Settings → Output → Recording. OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide, published November 30, 2023, gives recording baselines of NVENC CQP 16–23, keyframe interval 2, preset P5, High Quality tuning and two B-frames; for x264, it gives CRF 16–23, keyframe interval 2 and the veryfast preset. OBS says lower CQP or CRF values produce higher quality and larger files. These are local recording controls, not substitutes for CBR on the live YouTube feed.

A long local recording consumes disk space. Before an overnight session, confirm the destination drive has room and verify that the recording file remains intact and continues to grow while OBS records. YouTube’s guidance recommends checking archive-file integrity and growth, but does not establish that every creator needs a simultaneous local copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prioritize reliability over low latency
YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between capture and playback. Lower latency can increase playback buffering; it is less important when you are not interacting with viewers. For a pre-recorded or unattended overnight broadcast, choose reliability over low latency for its own sake. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains that trade-off.

Overnight test and safety checklist
- Confirm the stream key and RTMPS connection work, and keep the key private.
- Test the intended resolution, frame rate, audio and representative game motion before the unattended session.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback and make sure upload capacity has the recommended 20% headroom.
- Keep an eye on local storage if saving a recording; confirm the file grows and remains readable.
- Review the game footage, music, overlays and other material for rights and YouTube policy compliance. A technically stable stream does not establish that its content is authorized or eligible for monetization.
No preset guarantees an uninterrupted overnight broadcast. YouTube’s guidance does not specify a universally safe unattended duration, UPS requirement or automated alert setup, so plan a way to notice a failure if the stream must remain live.
Troubleshooting common overnight problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports unstable stream health or viewers see buffering | Upload capacity, shared network traffic or bitrate too high for the connection | Check upload performance, reduce competing traffic, and lower the frame rate or bitrate to a sustainable setting while preserving headroom. |
| OBS drops frames from network issues | Network path or available upload bandwidth | Test under the same conditions as the planned broadcast, check for other uploads, and use a more reliable connection if Wi-Fi proves inconsistent. Ethernet is a possible troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed speed upgrade. |
| OBS reports rendering or encoding lag | PC or encoder load | Test during demanding gameplay, reduce load or use 30 fps if needed. There is no single encoder choice established as best for all hardware. |
| Audio is absent, distorted or out of sync | OBS audio source, sample rate, levels or monitoring configuration | Check the selected desktop/game and microphone sources, test the complete audio path before going live, and use the recommended stereo sampling configuration where appropriate. |
| Local recording stops or the file is incomplete | Available disk space, destination drive or recording output | Check free space and destination, then verify the file is readable and still growing during a test. Keep recording quality settings separate from live bitrate settings. |
| The stream ends while the PC remains on | Connection interruption or service-side disconnect | Check YouTube stream health and connection stability; a settings preset alone cannot guarantee recovery from every interruption. |
Or let it run in the cloud
