Then test another YouTube video and a non-YouTube audio source. Those checks help show whether the silence is limited to one stream, YouTube playback, or your device; switching videos is not an established single cause.
Restore sound in the viewer
- Check the player and output. In the YouTube player, make sure the speaker icon is not muted and raise its volume. Confirm your computer, phone, or tablet is sending sound to the speakers or headset you intend to use.
- Pause, resume, and reload. Pause the stream or replay, resume it, and reload the page if sound does not return. If needed, close and reopen YouTube or your browser. YouTube recommends closing and reopening the browser as a general playback troubleshooting step.
- Compare other audio. Play another YouTube video, then try an unrelated audio source. If only the gaming stream is silent, note that distinction. If all audio is silent, focus on the device’s sound output or system audio rather than assuming the stream is at fault.
- Refresh the browser or device. Close extra tabs, update the browser, and restart the device if the problem persists. These are among YouTube’s general recommendations for playback problems on computers.
- Try another connection or device. If practical, open the stream on another supported device and test another internet connection. This is an isolation check, not a guaranteed fix for missing audio.
- Send feedback if it continues. Reproduce the problem and use YouTube’s in-product “Help and Feedback” or “Send feedback” route. The exact label can vary by app and device version.
YouTube’s viewer guidance covers playback that is not working correctly; it does not identify switching between videos as a specific cause of audio loss. See YouTube’s computer playback troubleshooting guidance.
Work out whether the stream or your setup is silent
Ask whether other viewers hear the same silence. A problem reported by one viewer alone does not establish that the creator’s stream has no audio.
- Only your playback is silent: If other viewers can hear the stream, concentrate on your player, browser or app, device output, and connection.
- Several viewers hear silence: If people on different devices or connections report the same problem, tell the channel owner or moderator and include what you tested. The creator can then investigate what the encoder is sending and YouTube’s stream health.
- The issue follows your device across sources: If another YouTube video and unrelated audio are also silent, troubleshoot the device’s output or system audio.
- Only one stream is affected across devices: Share that observation with the stream owner. It points toward investigating that stream, but does not by itself identify the cause.
Checks for the channel owner or moderator
Creator-side diagnosis is different from viewer troubleshooting. YouTube advises checking the audio and video sources routed to the encoder when a stream sounds poor. As YouTube Help puts it: “If your stream looks or sounds bad, there may be a problem with the quality of your audio and the video sources routed to your encoder.” If the encoder output sounds healthy, investigate the outbound internet connection. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents noAudioStream as a health issue for an incoming live stream without audio. That is a creator-side ingestion diagnosis; it does not show that a viewer’s browser has the same problem. See YouTube Live Streaming API health-status messages.
What to report if you ask for help
- Whether you were watching the live stream or its replay, and when the sound stopped.
- Whether the player was muted and which audio output was selected.
- Whether another YouTube video and an unrelated audio source played sound.
- Whether the stream was also silent on another device or connection, and whether other viewers reported it.
- Which recovery steps you tried and whether any restored audio.
