How to Monitor a YouTube Live Stream Launched with FFmpeg and Restart It if It Exits

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd, configure it to restart after an unexpected failure, and monitor stream health separately in YouTube Live Control Room. These address different failure modes: a supervisor restarts an FFmpeg process that has exited, while FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt to recover from certain output interruptions while the process is still running. Neither proves viewers are receiving healthy audio and video.

Know which part of the stream has failed

A YouTube stream has several layers to check. FFmpeg may have exited; it may still be running but unable to write to its output; YouTube may report a stream-health problem; or viewers may be receiving poor or missing audio or video. A single “running” status cannot distinguish these cases.

  • Process: Is FFmpeg running, and has the service supervisor restarted it?
  • Output: Is FFmpeg reporting an output or network error, and is its output-recovery mechanism working?
  • Platform and viewer: What does YouTube Live Control Room report, and does the stream actually look and sound right?
  • Network and configuration: Is there enough outbound bandwidth, and are the endpoint, credentials, and encoder settings valid?

YouTube advises creators to “monitor the stream health and review messages” during the event. Use Live Control Room alongside process and FFmpeg logs; do not treat a live process as proof of a healthy broadcast. YouTube’s live encoder settings and stream-health guidance

Restart FFmpeg after an unexpected exit with systemd

On a Linux host using systemd, define FFmpeg as a service and set a restart policy. The following is an adaptable pattern, not a tested, universal copy-and-paste service file. It assumes you have created a wrapper script at /usr/local/bin/stream-to-youtube that runs your actual FFmpeg command.

  1. Prepare the command. Put the FFmpeg command in the wrapper script, or specify it directly in ExecStart. Use the installed FFmpeg binary path and the input, codecs, output endpoint, and stream key for your setup.
  2. Protect the credential. Keep the key out of publicly shared scripts and logs. Use appropriately restricted file permissions or a service-credential mechanism supported by your host.
  3. Save and enable the service. Place the unit in the appropriate systemd unit directory for your host, then follow your distribution’s procedure to reload systemd, enable the service at boot if desired, and start it.
  4. Check the result. Inspect the service state and logs after starting it. Confirm separately in Live Control Room that YouTube receives the stream and reports healthy audio and video.

Restart=on-failure and RestartSec=5 illustrate a policy: retry after a failure, with a short pause. Check the systemd service manual and your installed version for exact behavior. A deliberate stop should stay stopped; avoid an unconditional shell loop that makes operator shutdown difficult.

Recover from output interruptions while FFmpeg is still running

A service restart policy acts only when the managed process exits. For some temporary output failures, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt recovery without ending the process. FFmpeg’s documentation includes this structure for an RTMP output:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT

  -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
  -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
  -map 0:v -map 0:a
  'rtmp://SERVER/live/STREAM_KEY'

This example retains placeholders and must be adapted. Confirm the FIFO options against your installed FFmpeg build, use the output endpoint and protocol configured by YouTube, and select mappings and encoders for the actual input. -attempt_recovery concerns output recovery; it does not restart a process that has terminated. Dropping packets when a queue is full can trade continuity for missing media. Recovery is not guaranteed for permanent failures, such as a rejected or incorrect configuration. FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation

The example uses -re because FFmpeg’s RTMP example uses it to process a file input at real-time rate. Do not assume that option is appropriate for every live-capture input. Check the installed build’s documentation and the input type you are using. FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation

Set encoder and network conditions before the event

Choose settings for the source, output quality, and available upload capacity, then test the exact stream before going live. YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers RTMP and RTMPS; H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC and MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current table for your chosen combination rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube recommends RTMPS as an encrypted option. YouTube’s current encoder settings

  • Confirm the protocol and ingest endpoint match your YouTube setup.
  • Choose a supported video codec, resolution, frame rate, audio codec, and target bitrate.
  • Use CBR and the recommended keyframe interval in the encoder configuration.
  • Check outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. If running primary and backup encoders, account for both bitrates plus the additional margin.
  • Test the precise input, FFmpeg build, settings, and network path before the event. A setting that works on one host or input may not suit another.

YouTube warns that network disruptions can break a stream. Leave the recommended capacity margin rather than planning to use the entire measured upload rate. YouTube’s bandwidth and encoder guidance

Protect and refresh the stream key

YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a secret: restrict access to the script or service credential that holds it, and avoid exposing it in shared logs or configuration. If it is exposed or compromised, reset it. If FFmpeg cannot start because the key or encoder configuration is wrong, check Live Control Room for the current key and update the encoder as needed. Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom What to check Next step
FFmpeg exited and did not return Check the systemd service state and logs to see whether the process failed and whether the unit is using the intended restart policy. Correct the underlying FFmpeg error, then verify the service starts and that Live Control Room receives the stream.
FFmpeg is running, but output stopped or errors appear Inspect FFmpeg output logs and the FIFO recovery behavior, if configured. Confirm the output endpoint and protocol. Fix temporary network or configuration problems. FIFO recovery cannot guarantee recovery from permanent errors.
FFmpeg is running, but YouTube reports poor or missing media Review Live Control Room’s stream-health status and messages, then check actual video and audio. Adjust the relevant encoder or source issue and test again; a running process alone does not establish viewer-facing health.
The stream drops during a network disruption Check outbound capacity and whether the connection has YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. Include both encoders’ bitrates when using primary and backup encoders. Increase available upload capacity or reduce the target bitrate to fit the connection, then test the setup.
FFmpeg cannot connect or authenticate Check the endpoint, protocol, stream key, and YouTube’s current encoder configuration. Retrieve the current key from Live Control Room if needed; reset it if it was compromised, then update the protected encoder configuration.

Understand what an FFmpeg restart does not guarantee

A restart policy can bring the encoder process back after failure, but the available YouTube guidance does not establish that an external FFmpeg restart preserves one continuous broadcast or archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement is not a guarantee that a restarted encoder will produce a single uninterrupted broadcast or recording.
