To broadcast prerecorded videos as a YouTube Live event, run an encoder that plays the videos in sequence and sends a continuous feed to the stream URL and key created in YouTube Live Control Room. Google Cloud can host that encoder workload, but uploading videos to Cloud Storage by itself does not start a YouTube broadcast. If you want viewers to choose videos on demand rather than watch a live event, use Google Cloud’s separate video-on-demand workflow instead.
Choose the right Google Cloud workflow
“Stream a prerecorded YouTube playlist” can mean either a live broadcast of videos playing in sequence or an on-demand library. Those are different systems:

YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to create or schedule the event and provide its ingest URL and key; they do not prescribe a specific Google Cloud deployment. Google’s VOD architecture is for preparing and delivering stored video, not for turning a Cloud Storage playlist into a YouTube Live broadcast.
Prepare a prerecorded playlist for a YouTube Live event
1. Create or schedule the event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Scheduling lets you set up a watch page and promote the event in advance.
- In the event’s stream settings, retrieve the stream URL and stream key. For an RTMPS connection, follow YouTube’s instructions to reveal and copy the RTMPS URL and key.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your event.

2. Run an encoder that can play the videos in order
Use encoder software configured to read the prerecorded items in the intended order and emit one continuous live output. That output—not the original playlist file or a Cloud Storage folder—is what YouTube receives. If you host the encoder workload on Google Cloud, you still need to select, configure, operate, and monitor that workload; YouTube’s general encoder setup does not provide a Google-specific playlist scheduler or deployment recipe.
Before committing to a particular encoder or cloud setup, confirm that it can play your file formats, maintain the intended sequence, handle audio correctly, and reconnect or recover in a way that suits your event. Test the complete path with representative content rather than assuming that a playlist will play continuously because its files are stored in the cloud.

3. Configure output to match your source and connection
Prefer RTMPS for YouTube ingest. YouTube describes it as RTMP protected with TLS/SSL. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 for video; AAC or MP3 for audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Match the encoder’s resolution and frame rate to your source and choose a bitrate that the available upload capacity can sustain reliably.
There is no single bitrate that fits every stream. YouTube publishes ranges by resolution, frame rate, and codec; consult its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the values applicable to your chosen output. Platform guidance can change, so check the current table when configuring a new stream.

4. Check the preview and go live
- Start the encoder early enough for YouTube to receive the feed and show a preview.
- Check that the picture, audio, playlist order, and stream health are correct.
- For a scheduled stream, click Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready.
- At the end, stop the event in Live Control Room and stop the encoder output. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
YouTube recommends testing with a representative stream and monitoring stream health. A preview confirms the ingest is reaching YouTube; it does not replace checking the full playlist and planned runtime in advance.

- Put the source video files in Cloud Storage.
- Use Transcoder API to prepare the files for playback as HLS or MPEG-DASH.
- Store the transcoded output in Cloud Storage and play it through a compatible player.
- Consider Media CDN to deliver media from an HTTP origin such as Cloud Storage.
Google recommends routing customer traffic reads through a CDN. For VOD, choose the source region with your audience’s location in mind. These are hosting and delivery choices for an application or website; they do not create a YouTube Live event. Google’s Live Stream API accepts live SRT or RTMP input and produces HLS or DASH output. Its overview includes live-to-VOD functionality, but for transcoding stored source files into on-demand outputs, Google’s VOD material points to Transcoder API. Neither an API name nor the presence of Cloud Storage output means that a stored playlist is automatically sent to YouTube; YouTube Live still needs an encoder feed sent to its ingest destination.
