For a stereo YouTube Live stream, set audio to 128 Kbps AAC. Twitch lists 160 kbps AAC as a maximum, not a target. If you need one stereo setting for both platforms, 128 Kbps AAC is a reasonable common choice based on those published specifications.
Recommended audio bitrate by platform
| Platform | Codec guidance | Stereo bitrate | Sample rate guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live | AAC or MP3; AAC is required for the RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 option | 128 Kbps | 44.1 kHz stereo; 48 kHz for 5.1 | 128 Kbps is YouTube’s listed stereo encoder setting. YouTube Help |
| Twitch | AAC | Up to 160 kbps | The Twitch guidance says AAC sampling frequency may be any value | 160 kbps is a ceiling, not a requirement to use the maximum. Twitch Help |
The 128 Kbps shared setting is an inference from the two platforms’ separate guidance, not a universal standard. Check the current encoder settings for each destination, especially if your streaming workflow applies separate audio settings per output.
How to choose the right setting
For stereo YouTube Live
Choose AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround sound; it lists 48 kHz for 5.1. Its RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 option supports AAC only. YouTube’s live encoder settings
For Twitch
Use AAC and stay at or below Twitch’s published maximum of 160 kbps. The maximum is not a recommendation that every stream should use 160 kbps. Twitch’s broadcasting guidelines

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For one stereo configuration serving both
Set AAC to 128 Kbps if your encoder or workflow needs one shared stereo value: it matches YouTube’s listed stereo setting and stays below Twitch’s stated AAC maximum. Confirm how your encoder applies audio settings to each destination.
Set and check audio before going live
- Choose the channel layout. Select stereo unless you intentionally produce a 5.1 mix and the destination and encoder support it.
- Set codec and bitrate for the destination. For YouTube stereo, use AAC at 128 Kbps; for Twitch, use AAC at no more than 160 kbps.
- Set the sample rate where the platform specifies one. YouTube lists 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1. Twitch’s cited guidance does not specify a single AAC sample rate.
- Test with representative content. Play the kinds of game audio, voice, music, and effects viewers will hear. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and video and monitoring stream health.
- Monitor the live feed. Check that audio is present, in sync, and not distorted, and watch YouTube’s stream health during the event.
What bitrate does—and does not—tell you
Bitrate is the amount of encoded audio data sent per second; codec and channel layout also matter when choosing a platform-compatible setting. The cited platform specifications establish supported settings and limits, not that pushing bitrate higher than a service’s guidance will make audio perceptibly better. A microphone or audio interface can affect what your encoder captures, but neither YouTube’s nor Twitch’s cited guidance requires new hardware to select an audio bitrate.

Common audio-setting problems
- The platform rejects or mishandles the audio: check that the codec and bitrate are within that destination’s guidance, and verify whether the encoder uses separate settings per output.
- Surround audio does not work as expected on YouTube: confirm that you selected the 5.1 workflow and AAC; YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance says its 5.1 option requires AAC.
- The feed sounds wrong despite using a listed bitrate: bitrate alone does not establish capture quality. Test the complete audio chain and a representative stream before the event.
- You are unsure which value to use for another service: do not assume YouTube’s 128 Kbps stereo setting or Twitch’s 160 kbps AAC ceiling applies elsewhere; check that service’s official live encoder specifications.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than a live game capture, StreamNeo keeps a channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
