To loop gaming VODs on a Linux server, put the video paths in an explicit FFmpeg concat playlist, then pass that playlist to FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 and -re. The concat demuxer works best when every file has compatible streams, codecs, and time bases; it does not automatically discover or reliably order everything in a folder. Encode to YouTube’s current ingest recommendations, send the stream to the exact RTMPS address and key from Live Control Room, and verify the preview before starting the broadcast.
1. Build a deliberate playlist of VODs
Create a working directory and a plain-text playlist. List the videos in the order you want them played; explicit paths avoid depending on shell glob ordering.

The ffconcat version 1.0 header is optional when the input format is specified with -f concat. The concat demuxer reads the listed files sequentially; it does not scan a folder for you. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Absolute paths require -safe 0. Use that only with a playlist you control. A safer alternative is to keep the playlist beside the videos and use relative paths with safe path handling. Check ffmpeg -h demuxer=concat or the installed build’s documentation if option behavior differs.

Check compatibility before streaming
The concat demuxer joins packets, not arbitrary media files. FFmpeg requires the inputs to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. Compare files with ffprobe, for example:
ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format /srv/vods/part-01.mp4Repeat for representative files and compare stream count, video and audio codecs, time base, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and duration. Run the commands under the same Linux account that will run FFmpeg so file permissions are tested too. Different stream lengths or inaccurate duration metadata can cause gaps or transition artifacts.

2. Loop the playlist and send it to YouTube
This command is a starting template, not a universal preset. Replace the destination with the exact RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or a public repository.

-f flv 'rtmps://SERVER_FROM_LIVE_CONTROL_ROOM/STREAM_PATH/STREAM_KEY'-rereads the files at their native rate instead of sending them as fast as the server can process them.-stream_loop -1requests indefinite input looping. It is an input option, so place it before the playlist’s-i.-f concatselects the concat demuxer, and-safe 0allows the absolute paths in this controlled playlist.-c:v libx264encodes H.264;-pix_fmt yuv420pis a common compatibility choice. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build includes the selected encoder and supports RTMPS.-r 30sets a 30 fps output. At that frame rate,-g 60and-keyint_min 60target a two-second GOP. If you change the frame rate, adjust the GOP/keyframe interval to about two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.-b:vand-maxrateset the video bitrate targets;-bufsizesets the rate-control buffer. The example’s 5 Mbps is not a recommendation for every resolution or frame rate; select a bitrate from YouTube’s current table.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100produces AAC audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, matching YouTube’s published stereo AAC recommendation.
Choose settings for the actual stream
YouTube Help’s encoder settings page, checked 2026-10-03, lists these H.264 recommendations. They are platform guidance, not guarantees of quality or server performance; check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before going live.

The command’s example targets 30 fps but pairs it with 5 Mbps, which is YouTube’s listed minimum for 1080p30—not the recommended 14 Mbps. Adjust resolution and bitrate together using the live table. Leave upload headroom above the stream bitrate, and check your server’s actual capacity. YouTube Help advises: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
YouTube’s broad guidance also lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) guidance. The example specifically uses H.264 with RTMPS and AAC; do not mix settings for a different codec or ingest protocol without checking compatibility. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest.

3. Verify the stream in Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast. Copy the ingest URL and stream key provided for that broadcast into the FFmpeg destination. Use the exact RTMPS address and port shown there.
- Start FFmpeg and wait for Live Control Room to show the incoming stream preview. Check the stream-health messages for ingest or encoding problems.
- Confirm the preview, video, and audio are as expected, then start the broadcast in Live Control Room. Starting FFmpeg sends the feed; it does not by itself mean the broadcast has been started for viewers.
- For a representative test, monitor CPU use and network upload as well as YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Performance depends on the server, selected encoding settings, and source material.
Review YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and applicable live streaming policies before broadcasting. Having the right FFmpeg command does not grant rights to VODs: use footage and audio you are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s rules on copyright and reused content.

5. Choose the right concat method for your VOD library

FFmpeg’s concat FAQ distinguishes the demuxer route for compatible packet concatenation from the filter route when re-encoding is needed. The exact normalization and filter settings depend on the files; a single flag cannot reliably reconcile every VOD library. FFmpeg documentation is regenerated nightly, so check the manual or ffmpeg -h output for your installed build.
