Keep the encoder and YouTube broadcast running; update the lesson playlist on the encoder side. Add revised lessons as new files, switch to them at a natural playback boundary, and verify the OBS preview before removing the old files. Avoid overwriting the file OBS is currently playing: the documented behavior does not guarantee a glitch-free reload.
Update the playlist without ending the live broadcast
The live feed comes from the encoder. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes starting a stream by sending content from an encoder and ending it by stopping that content. For an ordinary lesson update, change what the encoder plays rather than stopping the encoder or ending the live event. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers the stream start and stop flow.
- Keep a copy of the current playlist. Preserve the lesson currently playing and its original file until the replacement has been verified.
- Stage each revision under a new filename. Save it in the stable media folder used by the encoder, then open and play the file through to confirm it works before adding it to the playlist.
- Make the playlist change at a lesson boundary. In OBS, update the media source or VLC playlist controls for your setup. The OBS documentation describes media sources and playlist behavior, but does not establish one universally safe live-reload command for every configuration. OBS media-source documentation.
- Check the transition before cleanup. Watch the OBS preview and audio meters as the next lesson starts. Confirm the picture and sound are correct before removing the old copy.
- Keep the local stream dependencies running. A local playlist stream relies on the computer, lesson files, and internet connection remaining available. The local playlist workflow guide identifies these dependencies.
Test the update process in a private or otherwise controlled stream before relying on it unattended. Check how your actual setup behaves after an OBS restart, a source or VLC reload, and a file change at a playlist boundary. Treat this as an operational check: the cited documentation does not certify a no-interruption hot-swap procedure.
Do not assume an in-place file replacement is safe
If OBS is actively reading a lesson file, overwriting that same file may not make the source reload cleanly. The OBS documentation describes source and playlist controls but does not promise that replacing the currently playing file will update without a glitch. Use a new filename, stage the change, and test it on the installed OBS and VLC versions rather than relying on an assumed hot-swap behavior.

What YouTube’s 24/7 broadcast example does—and does not—show
YouTube’s Live Streaming API guide shows separate broadcast resources being managed while a 24/7 broadcast remains live: an interview broadcast can be activated and later completed without stopping the ongoing feed. This illustrates that broadcast-resource management can be separate from the continuing stream feed; it is not a method for replacing an OBS lesson file. YouTube’s 24/7 broadcast API guide.
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance is also a different layer from editing an OBS playlist. Its requirements include a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, TS segments between one and four seconds, and HTTPS POST/PUT; YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Choose a workflow based on control and availability
With local OBS playback, you control the sources and playlist directly, but the computer, files, and internet connection have to remain available. For any hosted alternative, check whether it allows playlist edits during playback, how edits affect the outgoing stream, what happens after an interruption, and what its current storage and service terms are. Do not infer that a cloud service supports live lesson edits without confirming that capability with the provider.
A portable external SSD can help keep local lesson files together and provide a place to stage backups. No particular drive capacity or speed is established as necessary here, and a drive does not make replacing the file currently in use safe.
