Start with the viewer’s takeaway, then work backward: outline the video, list the shots you need, prepare the location and equipment, and record with the edit in mind. A phone and available daylight can be enough to begin; add gear only when it solves a real sound, lighting, or backup problem.
1. Decide what the viewer should get from the video
Write one sentence that says what viewers should understand, decide, or do after watching. Then choose a small number of essential points that support that outcome. This keeps the video focused and gives you a test for each planned section: does it help deliver the promised takeaway?
For a video-game guide, for example, the outcome might be that a player can find a particular item or understand a boss’s attack pattern. That points toward the explanation and gameplay footage the video needs, without requiring a particular length or posting schedule.
2. Choose a script or an outline
Use a full script when precision matters
A script is useful when wording, timing, or a complicated explanation needs close control. Draft the opening, key explanations, transitions, and close. Read it aloud and revise sentences that are awkward to say. Keep the script within reach while recording.

Use talking points when natural delivery matters
An outline gives you room to speak conversationally while keeping the essential points in order. Note the key moments and any facts or steps you must not omit. Keep the outline visible during filming so you can resume after a pause.
Either way, plan the final video as you write: decide how it opens and closes, identify its key moments, and consider the camera positions, angles, and movement that will communicate them. YouTube’s video editing tips cover planning these elements as part of the edit.
For planning examples and downloadable materials, Crash Course’s Creator Lab Guides include script outlines, a script template, a sample script, a pre-production outline, a storyboard template, a lighting diagram, and an editing guide.

3. Turn the outline into a shot list
A shot list is a practical bridge between what you want to say and the footage needed to show it. YouTube recommends shot lists for larger projects; visualizing shots in advance can help avoid unnecessary takes.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| For each shot, note | What to decide |
|---|---|
| Purpose | Which point or moment this shot supports. |
| Subject and action | Who or what is shown, and what happens on camera. |
| Framing or angle | For example, a face-to-camera shot, a close-up, or a view over a player’s shoulder. |
| Movement | Whether the camera stays still or moves, and why. |
| Supporting footage | Any demonstration, detail, or other footage needed to make the point clear. |
For a gameplay tutorial, that might mean listing an on-camera introduction, a clear capture of the menu path, gameplay showing the relevant move, and a closing shot. The examples should match the video you are actually making; the list is there to prevent missing essential footage, not to dictate a style.
4. Prepare the location, background, and schedule
Choose a location where you can work comfortably and where its light and sound suit the recording. Check for distracting noise and look at the background through the camera before committing. Clothing and background should work with the scene rather than compete with it.

For an exterior shoot, consider weather, transport, and access to power; visiting the location beforehand can reveal problems you would otherwise find on filming day. Schedule time to set up and take breaks. If several people or many shots need coordination, prepare a call sheet as well as a detailed shot list. For a simple solo video, an outline and shot list may be enough.
Get any required permission from property owners, businesses, or people who may be identifiable. Respect people’s privacy, and check the frame for personally identifying details such as a home address, postal code, or phone number. YouTube’s filming tips recommend thinking about light and sound at the location before recording.
5. Choose equipment that serves the video
YouTube says creators can start with a mobile device; there is no universally best camera. Choose based on the goal, how you will handle the equipment, and your budget rather than buying a camera simply because it is marketed for video.

| Option | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| Phone you already have | A reasonable starting point if it can capture the footage the video needs. |
| Point-and-shoot camera | Can be simple to use and portable. |
| DSLR | Can offer a more cinematic look, but is heavier and takes more learning. |
These are trade-offs, not a ranking. YouTube’s video equipment tips advises choosing equipment for your creative style and production goals; it does not establish a universally right model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Set up sound and lighting
Check sound before the full take
Record a short test and listen back. The built-in microphone may work in some conditions for nearby on-camera recording, but YouTube’s equipment guide says you may need to stay three to four feet from the camera for the best audio with its onboard mic. Room echo and background noise can still make a recording hard to hear.
A shotgun microphone is directional and can suit natural sound from farther away. A lavalier microphone can be useful when recording a person at a distance. Before buying any external microphone, confirm that your phone or camera supports its connection; connector and compatibility vary by device.

Use the light available, then add only what is missing
Test window daylight or outdoor light first. If an indoor close-up needs more even illumination, a soft light may help. A two-point arrangement uses a key light and a fill light from opposing directions; a background light is another option when the scene calls for separation or a particular look. Check the result on camera, since the right setup depends on the subject, location, style, and budget.
7. Run a pre-shoot check, then film for the edit
- Test the camera, microphone, and lights in the actual recording position.
- Choose the recording resolution and other settings that fit your device and intended video.
- Check framing, focus, exposure, and sound in a short test clip.
- Charge recording devices and bring the necessary chargers.
- Pack compatible backups, such as extra batteries or memory cards if your equipment uses them.
- Label and pack the gear you need, and keep the script or outline handy.
- Review the shot list and leave time for setup and breaks.
Follow the list while recording, capture the essential shots and supporting footage, and check that sound and lighting remain usable as you go. If you batch several videos in one session, clothing changes can help distinguish them. YouTube’s filming guidance puts the preparation plainly: “For any location, it’s important to think about the lighting and sound to make sure you get a good quality recording.”
Keep a YouTube channel live between videos
Planning and filming a regular video is different from keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running continuously. If you want uploaded videos to loop as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs that playback from the cloud, so your computer does not need to stay on. Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload your video, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
