Choose your streaming platform, resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec first; use that platform’s bitrate guidance; then check that your consistent upload capacity can sustain the bitrate with headroom. Finally, test the actual setup while playing the kind of game you plan to stream. A speed-test peak alone is not a reliable bitrate target.
What bitrate should you start with?
There is no single correct bitrate for every live stream. The target depends on where you stream, the resolution and frame rate you send, and the codec your platform accepts. The figures below are platform recommendations or examples—not interchangeable universal presets. Check the destination’s current guidance before going live.
For gaming, pick a resolution and frame rate your connection and encoder can hold during fast movement, not just a quiet menu. More resolution and frames generally require more bitrate and encoding capacity. If the feed becomes unstable, reduce the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again. Twitch explicitly advises prioritizing stability over pushing quality until frames drop or the connection is at its limit (Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines).

YouTube’s live encoder help page gives these recommended bitrates for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Choose the column matching the codec you send. These are recommendations, not minimums.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For context, YouTube lists a minimum of 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60, while its recommended rates are 12 Mbps and 17 Mbps respectively. Minimum and recommended values serve different purposes; do not treat the minimum as the quality target. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the full current guidance.

| Resolution and frame rate | Example bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6,000 kbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4,500 kbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 4,500 kbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3,000 kbps |
The guide’s examples use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Twitch also notes that encoder choice affects system load: x264 uses CPU resources, while NVENC uses a dedicated GPU encoder. Check the Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines for current platform instructions.
Calculate whether your upload can sustain it
Use upload capacity, not download speed
Your outgoing stream consumes upload bandwidth. Measure upload under conditions similar to your broadcast: at the same time of day if possible, with the same network connection, and while other household or office upload activity is representative. A speed-test peak may not be consistently available to the encoder, and other devices can use bandwidth while you stream.

Apply headroom
Twitch’s FAQ gives a general practice of keeping upload speed at least 30% above the configured stream bitrate. For example, a 6 Mbps stream corresponds to at least 8 Mbps of upload capacity under that rule. This is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee that a stream will be stable in every network condition. Twitch’s FAQ also notes that other devices using upload bandwidth affect the connection (Twitch streaming FAQ).
A separate Twitch Sports explainer published March 19, 2020 advises keeping broadcast bitrate at or below 80% of consistent upload bandwidth (Twitch Sports: Getting Started). That is a dated rule of thumb, and it is not mathematically identical to the FAQ’s bitrate-plus-30% practice. Use current platform guidance and a real test rather than treating either formula as a universal engineering limit.

Example: a Twitch 1080p60 target
Twitch’s guide gives 6,000 kbps (6 Mbps) as an example for 1080p60. Applying the FAQ’s 30% margin rule yields a target of at least 7,800 kbps, or 7.8 Mbps, of available upload capacity; the FAQ’s rounded example says at least 8 Mbps. If your consistent upload falls below that, or fluctuates near it, lower the bitrate or choose a less demanding resolution/frame-rate combination and test again.
Set the encoder and test the real stream
- Choose the destination and codec. Select YouTube or Twitch first, then use that platform’s ingest recommendations for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send. Do not copy settings across platforms without checking their guidance.
- Set a sustainable resolution and frame rate. For a fast game, test the motion-heavy scenes you expect to broadcast. If the encoder or network cannot hold the combination, reduce resolution or frame rate before raising bitrate further.
- Set rate control and keyframes according to the destination. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Twitch’s cited example settings specify CBR and a two-second interval. Follow the current instructions for your platform and encoder.
- Compare the bitrate with sustained upload capacity. Use upload measurements from representative conditions, include the platform’s suggested margin, and account for other devices and network use.
- Run a representative test before the broadcast. Include game movement and audio like the planned stream. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. Twitch points streamers to network tests and stream-health tools. See YouTube’s guidance and the Twitch FAQ.
- Adjust one variable at a time. If the stream drops frames or reports connection problems, first reduce bitrate or move to a lower-demand resolution/frame rate. Retest before restoring higher settings.
Troubleshoot instability and poor picture quality
- Connection warnings or dropped frames: The configured bitrate may be too close to available upload capacity, or another device may be consuming upload bandwidth. Lower the bitrate, reduce competing uploads, and rerun a representative test.
- Stable connection but soft or blocky fast gameplay: Check that you are using the destination’s recommendation for your codec and resolution. If the connection and encoder can sustain it, a higher recommended tier or a lower resolution/frame-rate compromise may improve the result; verify in a test rather than assuming a peak speed is enough.
- Encoding overload or skipped frames: The computer may be struggling to encode the selected resolution and frame rate. Twitch notes that x264 uses CPU and NVENC a dedicated GPU encoder; check the encoder workload and reduce encoding demands if necessary.
- Settings work in a test but fail during the broadcast: The test may not have included the same game motion, audio, or network use. Repeat with representative gameplay and monitor the platform’s stream-health indicator while live.
- Unclear codec or ingest settings: Recheck the platform’s current live encoder page. Bitrate tables, supported ingest options, and platform requirements can change.
Or let it run in the cloud
