The setup can send a 24/7 broadcast, but it does not make the stream immune to internet or power interruptions—and YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived at all.
Before you begin
You need a YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, vMix, a stable wired internet connection where possible, and enough sustained upload capacity for the selected video bitrate plus operating headroom. If this is the channel’s first live stream, YouTube may take up to 24 hours to activate the feature, according to the vMix Knowledge Base. Check the vMix YouTube Live setup guidance.
- Run a speed and stability test at the location and time the stream will operate; a headline speed-test result is not a guarantee of sustained upload.
- Prepare a representative scene, including the motion and audio your actual broadcast will use.
- Keep a local recording plan if you need a retained master or replay independent of YouTube’s archive.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
Create the YouTube Live event and connect vMix
- In YouTube Studio, select Create and then Go live. Choose an instant stream or schedule an event, and enter its title, description, visibility, and other event details.
- Copy the stream key from the stream setup in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private and do not publish it in a screenshot, stream overlay, or public document.
- In vMix, open Streaming Settings, choose YouTube Live as the destination, paste the stream key, and save the settings. Follow the fields displayed by your installed vMix version; YouTube’s general encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key, while the built-in destination may handle the connection details for you.
- For a scheduled event, start streaming from vMix first. Confirm that YouTube Studio receives the feed and displays a usable preview, then select Go Live in YouTube Studio when ready to make the event live.

Choose vMix output and encoder settings
Encoder and protocol
vMix Help 28 marks FFMPEG as the recommended streaming application in its settings interface. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 in its current encoder guidance. H.264 is the straightforward documented baseline when compatibility is the priority. Match the bitrate guidance to the codec and format you actually select rather than mixing figures from different codec tables.

Select a resolution and frame rate your connection can sustain
The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not speed-test results or guarantees of Indian ISP performance. Higher motion detail can increase both bitrate demand and encoder work. Choose a format that matches your production and validate it over a representative test.

These numbers are YouTube’s platform recommendations; they do not establish that a particular connection in India can maintain the chosen upload continuously. Leave headroom for network variation instead of setting the stream at the full measured upload ceiling. YouTube’s page advises testing before starting a live stream.
Use Network Buffer only as a mitigation
vMix’s Network Buffer setting may help when available network speed is unreliable, but buffering cannot replace a stable upstream connection. vMix Help also discusses keyframes, network buffer, and stream delay in Streaming Quality. Use the current setting descriptions in your installed vMix build and verify behavior during testing.

Test the broadcast before making it public
- Start a private or otherwise non-public test event with the same vMix production profile you intend to use continuously.
- Include representative movement, scene changes, and the actual type of audio. A static test image will not reveal every encoder or upload problem.
- Check the YouTube Studio preview and stream-health messages for connection or encoding warnings.
- In vMix, open View Status to inspect technical information that can help diagnose connection problems.
- For a scheduled event, verify the preview first and then use YouTube Studio’s Go Live control.
Changing bitrate or reducing resolution/frame rate can reduce upload demand; retest after each material change. Increasing Network Buffer may help with variability, but if the connection repeatedly drops or cannot sustain the target, choose a lower-demand profile or improve the connection rather than relying on buffer alone.
Plan continuity, power, and archives for a 24/7 channel
A 24/7 transmission is not the same as a guaranteed 24/7 replay archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If replay retention matters, consider splitting programming into shorter scheduled events and keep a local recording as a separate backup. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

A local archive needs storage for the entire recording duration. Capacity depends on bitrate, recording format, and how long you retain footage; calculate it for your actual vMix recording settings. An external SSD is one possible storage category, but no single capacity or model fits every workflow. vMix’s reference-system examples include SSD storage and recording-capable builds; they do not establish a universal system specification. For power and network continuity in India, base choices on the actual site: sustained upload and packet stability, equipment power draw, and the local outage pattern. The available guidance does not establish city-by-city ISP performance or a universal UPS size or runtime. Verify your computer, router, modem, and any backup power arrangement under the conditions in which the channel will run. Do not assume vMix can continue sending if the encoding computer, network equipment, power, or internet connection fails.

Troubleshoot common vMix-to-YouTube problems
