In 2023, livestreaming was one part of a wider creator format mix, while platform preferences and live-channel patterns varied by survey and region. The evidence points to complementary formats, interactive communities, and—in Germany—more live output and greater production investment. It does not establish a single global winner or a global livestream audience total.
How creators fit livestreaming into a wider format mix
YouTube’s 2023 Culture & Trends report described creators extending stories beyond long-form video into short-form, livestreams, and podcasts. In the report’s survey, 87% of people said they had watched at least four YouTube content formats in the previous 12 months. That is evidence of format breadth on YouTube, not a measure of livestream viewing alone.
YouTube’s January 2023 creator-economy outlook also discussed connected-TV viewing and long-form videos and Shorts working together. It cited 1.5 billion monthly logged-in Shorts viewers in the prior year. That figure concerns Shorts, not livestreams, and should not be used as a live-audience estimate.
For creators, the useful takeaway is that live can sit alongside edited long-form, short-form, and podcasts rather than replace them. The reports support the presence of multiple formats, but do not show that publishing across all of them causes audience growth for every creator.

Which platforms creators’ audiences named
The Influencer Marketing Factory’s 2023 Creator Economy Report asked, “Where do you usually watch livestreams by content creators/influencers?” Its survey chart reported these responses:

These are survey response shares for the stated question, not global platform market shares. The available report information does not establish enough about sample size or methodology to treat the distribution as representative of all viewers or creators. YouTube led this particular measure; it does not follow that it led every measure of livestreaming in 2023.

Live streaming meant more than gaming
Twitch’s 2023 engineering account described creators streaming gaming, chatting, music, and cooking, and presented interaction with communities as central to the live experience. This is Twitch’s own characterization of its platform and priorities, not an independent count of what all livestreamers did.
That framing matters for video-game creators: gameplay may be the anchor, but conversation and recurring community participation can be part of the format. The source does not quantify how much each category contributed to viewing or growth.

What the German channel data said—and did not say
The Landesanstalt für Kommunikation Baden-Württemberg’s Online-Video-Monitor 2023 reported a trend toward more livestreams and higher-quality or more expensive production. In its German analysis, Twitch accounted for 93% of live-streaming channels counted across Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook Gaming.
The 93% figure is a share of channels in that monitor’s German analysis, not audience share and not a global platform ranking. It measures something different from the Influencer Marketing Factory survey, which asked respondents where they usually watched creator or influencer livestreams. Those figures should not be compared as if they measured the same thing.

What creators could reasonably take from 2023
- Build a format mix around the content. Live, short-form, long-form, and podcasts can serve different roles; the available reports show format variety, not a guaranteed growth formula.
- Choose a platform based on the audience and format. The survey provides one snapshot of stated viewing destinations, while Twitch’s platform account emphasizes community interaction. Neither proves a universal best platform.
- Interpret national data locally. The German channel finding indicates Twitch’s prominence within the monitor’s defined set and geography; it should not be projected onto other markets.
- Do not infer a global live-market total from adjacent metrics. The reported Shorts audience and YouTube format-breadth finding are not livestream audience counts.
