To repeat one video in a YouTube livestream, set VLC to repeat the current item, then send VLC’s playback through an encoder connected to YouTube Live. Use repeat-all only when you want a playlist to cycle. The repeat setting controls VLC playback; it does not connect your stream to YouTube, and YouTube’s viewer-side Loop control does not affect your livestream source.
Set VLC to repeat the right item
- Open your source in VLC. Open the single video you want to repeat. If you are streaming several clips, add them to a playlist and arrange them in the order you want first.
- Choose the repeat mode. Select repeat-current-item for one video, or repeat-all to cycle through the whole playlist. VideoLAN’s playlist API treats these as separate modes: VLC playlist API.
- Confirm the active mode in your VLC build. The exact menu label, icon, and route can vary by VLC release and operating system. There is no single click path or shortcut established for every desktop version, so check the repeat indicator or mode in the VLC version you use rather than assuming a universal route.
Repeat-current makes the selected video start again when it reaches the end. Repeat-all returns to the beginning of the playlist after its last item; it is not the right choice if you need to repeat only one selected clip in a playlist.
Connect VLC playback to YouTube Live
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and follow YouTube’s encoder setup flow. YouTube’s guide is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the current Stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Enter each in the matching server and key fields. A stream key is a credential—YouTube describes stream keys as like your stream’s “password and address”—so keep it private and do not share screenshots or configuration files that expose it. See Manage live stream settings.
- Use the exact ingestion URL provided by Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it and is configured for it. YouTube describes RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP. If you use RTMPS, make sure the encoder supports the protocol and that the URL is the RTMPS URL YouTube supplied, not a different or outdated address. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Start the encoder feed and check the preview. In Live Control Room, follow the preview and go-live sequence for the stream you created. When you finish, stop the encoder feed and end the broadcast as directed in Live Control Room.
VLC’s repeat setting only determines what VLC plays. The encoder and the current YouTube Stream URL and stream key carry that playback to the live stream.
Choose encoder quality and test before going live
Set the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to values supported by your source, encoder, and available upload connection. There is no single bitrate that is right for every setup. YouTube’s current guidance lists recommended combinations and ingestion settings in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Match the output resolution and frame rate to what your source and encoder can reliably provide.
- Choose a bitrate appropriate for that resolution and frame rate, with your actual upload capacity in mind; do not treat a recommendation for one format as suitable for all formats.
- Test the complete path—VLC playback, encoder, connection, and YouTube preview—before scheduling or announcing the stream.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and broadcast so you can catch connection or encoding problems.
Fix common repeat and connection problems
The video plays once and stops
VLC may be set to no repeat or repeat-all rather than repeat-current. Check the active playback mode in your VLC build and select the mode for the current item. If the source is a playlist, confirm that the intended clip is the selected item.
The playlist loops, but a single clip does not
Repeat-all cycles the playlist. Use repeat-current-item when you want one selected video to restart at its end.

YouTube does not receive the video
Check that the encoder is running and that its server and key fields contain the current Stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Confirm that the key has not been mistyped or exposed and replaced, and inspect the YouTube preview and stream-health status.
An RTMPS connection or SSL error appears
Verify that the encoder supports RTMPS, that RTMPS is enabled where required, and that you copied the exact RTMPS URL shown by YouTube. YouTube’s RTMPS help page covers protocol and SSL troubleshooting.

The stream drops or looks unstable
Check the encoder’s connection and YouTube’s stream-health information. Revisit the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against the available upload capacity, then run another full-path test. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; a VLC repeat setting cannot correct an encoder or network problem.

With the VLC-and-encoder method, playback and encoding depend on your local setup staying available for the broadcast. You do not need to buy a dedicated hardware encoder just because you are streaming a file: YouTube’s encoder workflow does not establish that as a requirement. Use hardware only if your particular setup calls for it.
