How to Switch Product Categories in an OBS YouTube Live Playlist

To change what viewers see, switch to a dedicated OBS scene for each product category. To change the products viewers can browse or buy on YouTube, use the stream’s Shopping controls in YouTube Studio. Those are separate actions: switching an OBS scene does not automatically change YouTube’s tagged products or pinned item.

First, identify what you mean by “product category”

If you mean… Change it in… What viewers see change
The on-screen segment, such as kitchen, beauty, or tech OBS Studio scenes The video layout and sources
The products shown in YouTube’s Shopping features YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room The tagged product list or pinned product
A sequence of prerecorded category clips OBS Media Source, optionally using a VLC playlist Media playback in the stream; not the Shopping list

Switch the on-screen category in OBS while live

  1. Create one scene per segment. In OBS Studio’s Scenes dock, add and clearly name scenes such as “Kitchen,” “Beauty,” or “Tech.” Scenes are layouts that can contain a camera, capture device, image, text, browser page, or media source. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
  2. Build each layout. Add and arrange the sources that belong to that category. For example, use an image or text source for the category title or product name, and a camera or capture source to show the product demonstration. See OBS’s Sources Guide.
  3. Prepare a controlled handoff. Click Studio Mode. OBS shows the current live scene on the right and the editable preview on the left. Set up the next category in Preview, then click Transition, use a Quick Transition, or trigger a configured hotkey. OBS describes Studio Mode as showing “the current Live Scene (what your viewers see) on the right while your edit Scene is on the left.”
  4. Choose the transition before the show. Select a Cut or Fade, or another transition from OBS’s scene-transition controls, and set its duration if applicable. A Cut changes immediately; a Fade makes the handoff gradual.
  5. Rehearse the sequence. Check that the right scene is live, the next one is ready in Preview, and the text, product demonstration, and other sources appear as intended before you take it live.

Change the product shown on YouTube Live

To update the Shopping list or feature a different product, use YouTube Studio rather than relying on an OBS scene change. YouTube Shopping availability and product visibility depend on channel eligibility, region, and shipping; confirm what your channel can use in YouTube Studio. Tagging products from other brands requires program eligibility.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the scheduled or active stream’s Live Control Room.
  2. Open the Shopping tab and tag the products you want to feature. The order in the product picker is the order shown to viewers.
  3. Pin the product you are discussing. YouTube documents a desktop option to automatically pin multiple tagged products in sequence; the documented rotation interval is 60 seconds.
  4. Where possible, finish reordering or removing products at least 30 minutes before the stream. YouTube warns that product-list updates made during a stream may not be visible to some existing viewers.
  5. Coordinate each handoff: introduce the next segment, switch to its OBS scene, then pin the corresponding product in the Shopping panel. Automatic rotation follows YouTube’s fixed interval, so it may not line up with your segment timing.

YouTube’s guidance says third-party products should be meaningfully related to the stream and prominently featured. Check current eligibility and product availability in your Live Control Room; they can vary by region and change over time. See YouTube Help: Tag products in your live streams and YouTube Help: Tips for selling your own products – Live.

If “playlist” means prerecorded category clips

OBS’s Media Source plays audio and video files. If VLC Media Player is installed, a Media Source can also use a VLC playlist. This controls media playback in the stream; it does not control YouTube Shopping tags, product ordering, or the pinned product. Use OBS scenes for visual category layouts and YouTube Studio’s Shopping tools for the products viewers see.

Common problems and fixes

  • The video changes, but the Shopping product does not. OBS scenes and YouTube Shopping are separate controls. Pin the intended product in the Live Control Room.
  • The wrong scene reaches viewers. In Studio Mode, the right side is live and the left side is Preview. Confirm the intended scene in Preview, then use Transition to take it live.
  • Some viewers do not see a product-list edit. YouTube says live updates may not be visible to some existing viewers. Make ordering and removal changes before the stream where possible, following YouTube’s recommendation to finish at least 30 minutes ahead.
  • Automatic product rotation does not match the segment. YouTube documents a 60-second rotation for the desktop automatic pinning option. Pin the item manually at the segment handoff if you need tighter timing.
  • A product cannot be tagged or is not visible to the intended audience. Check channel eligibility, regional availability, and shipping. Product visibility is not guaranteed for every channel or viewer.
  • A playlist changes the video but not the product shelf. An OBS Media Source or VLC playlist is for playback, not Shopping controls. Update the product in YouTube Studio.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to keep looping 24/7, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera, so use OBS for live scene changes and YouTube Shopping controls. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
