YouTube Creator Setup: How to Get Started

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To start a YouTube channel, sign in with a Google Account, create a YouTube channel, record a first video with equipment you already have, then upload it in YouTube Studio and choose its visibility. A phone is enough to begin. You do not need a dedicated camera or studio setup; add equipment when you can identify a real filming, sound, or lighting problem it will solve.

What you need before you publish

  • A Google Account to sign in to YouTube.
  • A YouTube channel. Watching videos and subscribing do not require one, but uploading does.
  • A video file recorded on a phone or made with computer recording software.
  • A usable internet connection for uploading, and a deliberate choice of video details and visibility before publishing.

YouTube’s channel creation guide explains the personal-channel and business-or-other-name routes. Its recording guidance covers phone and computer workflows, while the upload guide describes uploading through Studio.

Create the right kind of channel

A personal channel is a straightforward choice if you will run the channel yourself under your own identity. If you are setting up a business identity or want a channel that can be managed by more than one person, use the business or other-name/Brand Account route. YouTube says that route can support multiple owners or managers.

  1. Sign in to YouTube with the Google Account that should own or manage the channel.
  2. Open YouTube’s channel-creation flow. YouTube’s help page directs users to the channel list and the option to create a channel; interface wording and placement can change, so follow the current on-screen labels.
  3. Choose the personal route for an individual channel, or the business/other-name option if you need a separate identity or shared management.
  4. Choose a profile picture, channel name, and handle, then complete creation.

Think about account access before you publish. For a shared project, make sure the channel is created through the route intended for multiple owners or managers rather than relying on one person to share a personal Google Account password.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a first-video format before buying gear

Decide what the first video needs to show: a talking-head introduction, a game or product demonstration, a vlog, a screen-based tutorial, or another format. That choice determines whether you mainly need a steady camera position, clear close-up speech, good light, or computer screen-recording software. This is a practical way to apply YouTube’s equipment guidance, not a platform requirement.

YouTube’s Video equipment tips say there is no universal camera choice and recommend starting with a mobile device if that suits the creator’s goals. In practice, first use the device you have and inspect the result: is the subject framed steadily, can viewers hear speech clearly, and is the light usable?

What type of camera will I use?

For a first upload, a smartphone camera is often the lowest-friction option if it can capture the scene you want. A tripod or phone stand is an optional way to stabilize framing; it is not a prerequisite. If you record frequently while moving, a point-and-shoot camera may suit a vlogging setup, and some models have a reversible screen. A DSLR can offer more control and a more cinematic look, but it is typically heavier, costs more, and takes time to learn.

Setup Can suit Trade-offs to check
Phone camera Getting started, mobile filming, and a simple first video Stability, framing, and whether it supports the microphone you want to use
Point-and-shoot camera Frequent vlogging; a reversible screen can help with self-framing Portability, focus needs, cost, and microphone input compatibility
DSLR camera Creators who want more control over an artistic or cinematic look Greater weight and cost, plus a learning curve
Computer webcam A desk-based recording if suitable recording software is available YouTube does not provide a built-in computer webcam recording feature; record and save a file using software, then upload it

If your first video is a screen tutorial or gameplay capture, record it with computer software and save the video file before uploading. For other formats, test the available phone or camera before considering a purchase. Upgrade only when you know what is limiting the shot.

How will I handle sound and lighting?

Sound: make speech easy to hear

Sound can undermine an otherwise clear picture. If you rely on a camera’s built-in microphone, YouTube’s equipment tips suggest staying about three to four feet from the camera for best onboard-mic audio. That is general guidance, not a guarantee: room echo, background noise, and the device all affect results.

  • For a stationary close-up, start with the built-in mic and listen to a short test recording before making the full video.
  • A shotgun microphone is directional and can suit natural sound picked up from farther away.
  • A wireless lavalier microphone attaches to the speaker and can help when the person is farther from the camera or moving.
  • Before buying an external microphone, verify that your phone or camera has a compatible microphone input or that the necessary adapter and connection are supported.

Lighting: improve what is already available

Try recording near a window or outdoors in natural light before buying lighting. For a simple indoor arrangement, a two-point setup uses a key light on the subject and a fill light to balance shadows. A soft light can work well for close-up shots; a camera-mounted light may be more practical for mobile filming. Choose based on where you record, the space available, portability, and the look you want.

Record and upload your first video

  1. Set up the shot. Place the phone or camera steadily, frame the subject, and check the light. If the video includes speech, make a short test recording and listen back.
  2. Record and save the video file. On a phone, record with the camera app. On a computer, use recording software and save the finished video file; YouTube notes that it does not include a built-in computer-webcam recording feature.
  3. Open YouTube Studio. Use Create, then Upload videos, and select the file, following the current labels shown in Studio.
  4. Review the video details. Enter the requested information and check the preview and settings rather than rushing through the upload flow.
  5. Choose visibility deliberately. Set whether the video should be public, private, or another available visibility option. If you are not ready to publish, YouTube’s upload help says an unfinished upload can be saved as private.
  6. Complete the upload or leave it saved. Confirm the chosen visibility and finish the on-screen flow. Check the video page afterward if you published it.

See YouTube’s video upload instructions for the current Studio flow and details. The labels and available choices may change over time.

Copyright and channel policies matter from the first upload

Before publishing, make sure you have rights to the footage, music, images, and other material in the video. A video being available online does not by itself mean you can reuse it. YouTube’s monetization policies also matter if you later apply to earn; satisfying subscriber or viewing thresholds does not bypass policy review. Avoid treating a reused clip or a music track as cleared unless you have permission or another valid basis to use it.

When monetization becomes relevant

Creating a channel and publishing a video do not automatically make a creator eligible to earn. YouTube’s YouTube Partner Program overview lists baseline requirements in addition to audience thresholds: comply with monetization policies, live in a region where YPP is available, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, enable 2-Step Verification, have access to advanced features, and link or set up one active AdSense for YouTube account in Studio.

Standard ad-revenue eligibility

The eligibility page accessed on 2026-10-03 lists either 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Shorts-feed watch hours do not count toward the 4,000-hour route. YouTube reviews the whole channel after an application; meeting the threshold does not guarantee acceptance.

Earlier access to some features

In eligible regions, some creators may qualify for earlier access to certain features with 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the previous 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified long-form watch hours in the previous 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. This is not the same as full ad-revenue eligibility, and feature-specific and regional rules apply. Check the Earn area in YouTube Studio for current availability.

The YPP overview accessed on 2026-10-03 also announces updated terms starting February 1, 2027, and says creators should review and accept terms by January 31, 2027 to continue fully monetizing. Because those terms are forward-looking and can change, check the official overview before relying on them.
