AWS Elemental MediaTailor can assemble a continuous linear channel from scheduled VOD and live sources, but its playback endpoint is not itself a YouTube Live broadcast. To put the assembled channel on YouTube, you must separately establish and verify a delivery path from MediaTailor’s output to YouTube’s ingest. The steps below cover MediaTailor channel assembly and identify where that separate integration begins.
What MediaTailor channel assembly does—and what it does not
MediaTailor channel assembly creates a linear stream by assembling manifests that point to content hosted at your origin; it does not modify or re-encode the underlying video segments. AWS describes it as “a manifest-only service that allows you to create linear streaming channels using your existing video on demand (VOD) content mixed with live content.” See AWS’s channel assembly overview and MediaTailor concepts.
A channel schedule is a sequence of programs referencing VOD or live sources. A 24/7 channel is achieved by arranging the intended continuous schedule, keeping the channel operating, and monitoring playback; AWS’s reviewed guidance does not describe a special “24/7” switch or guarantee operational uptime. The channel’s output is a playback endpoint for compatible players, not a YouTube publishing integration. Treat YouTube ingest and distribution as a separate system to configure and test.
Choose the schedule model

Prepare the source location and content
Create a source location
In the MediaTailor console, create a source location with a name and an HTTP(S) base URL for the origin. AWS lists S3, a standard web server, a CDN, and a packaging origin such as MediaPackage as possible sources. S3 can optionally use SigV4 authentication. Follow the current console workflow in Creating a source location.
Add and package sources
- For VOD: add VOD sources and package configurations. For the setup described in AWS’s getting-started procedure, sources within a package configuration should have the same number of child streams, and source package durations should align. AWS recommends a consistent encoding template; the tutorial warns that per-title or automated ABR methods can violate those conditions in that setup. Confirm the current service requirements and validate your assets before choosing a production encoding workflow.
- For live: add live sources to the source location and configure the package format and manifest location. AWS requires each source to have at least one package configuration. A channel needs corresponding outputs for the source groups and formats it uses. See Adding live sources.
Check live manifests before scheduling
Schedule order cannot compensate for an incompatible live manifest. AWS’s live-source guidance specifies these checks:

- For HLS, include
#EXT-X-PROGRAM-DATE-TIMEon the first segment in the manifest window and on every discontinuity. - HLS ad markers must use
DATERANGE. - AWS recommends a source manifest window at least as long as the MediaTailor channel’s manifest window; its guidance suggests 30 seconds longer as a best practice.
- Match the target duration and number of child playlists with existing sources. For a package configuration, live sources should have the same number of child streams.

Create the channel and its outputs
- Create a channel in MediaTailor and choose a playback mode that fits the intended behavior. Check the current channel-assembly documentation and console options rather than assuming one mode fits every schedule.
- Add outputs that correspond to the package configurations and source groups your schedule will use. HLS and DASH are examples of supported package formats in the channel-assembly documentation.
- Record the playback endpoint for testing with a compatible player. This endpoint serves the assembled channel; it does not, by itself, send a broadcast to YouTube.

Add programs and make the schedule continuous
- Open the channel schedule in the MediaTailor console and add programs in the desired order, using the current schedule controls to position each item relative to the others.
- Select a source for each program. A program references either a VOD source or a live source. You can combine live sources with VOD assets or other live sources when their package configurations and channel outputs are compatible.
- Set each program’s duration and transitions. In the console workflow, a live program has a duration setting in milliseconds. Set boundaries deliberately so the schedule advances as intended.
- Check the entire lineup for gaps or unintended overlaps and ensure it contains the programming you intend to repeat or continue. The schedule mechanics do not guarantee that a source will remain available or that the channel will have uninterrupted operational uptime.

Start the channel and verify the output
- Start the channel using the MediaTailor console or the applicable AWS workflow.
- Request the playback URL in a compatible player. Confirm that the manifest loads, advances over time, and transitions between scheduled programs as expected.
- Test each source type and transition—including live-to-VOD and VOD-to-live boundaries if your schedule mixes them. Investigate failures at the origin, package, manifest, channel, and player layers.
- For YouTube, verify a separate delivery path. MediaTailor’s playback endpoint and YouTube ingest are distinct steps. The AWS channel-assembly documentation cited here does not establish a direct YouTube publishing integration. Do not assume YouTube can ingest the endpoint as configured; verify the supported ingest format and any required intermediary or distribution service independently, then test the complete path before relying on it.
Plan schedule changes on looping channels
On a looping channel, an edit to a program scheduled within the next 10 minutes may not appear until the next loop. Account for that delay when making near-term lineup changes, and validate the service’s current behavior before setting operational expectations. See Creating a program within a channel schedule.

AWS’s “Getting started with MediaTailor channel assembly” tutorial states a fee of $0.10 per hour for active channels and says inactive channels are not charged. The tutorial’s publication year is not stated, so treat this as a figure from that tutorial—not a confirmed current quote—and verify the AWS documentation, current AWS pricing, and your account terms before budgeting. This figure covers the channel fee cited by the tutorial; it does not establish the total cost of origins, packaging, delivery, or any separate YouTube distribution path.
