Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To reduce OBS CPU usage during a nonstop rain ambience stream, first identify whether the problem is encoding, rendering, or your network; then use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, lower output resolution or frame rate only as much as necessary, and simplify the rain scene. Change one setting at a time and compare results during the same workload. A high CPU reading alone does not identify the bottleneck.
Find out what is actually overloaded
Before changing settings, capture a baseline while the rain stream is running. In OBS, open View > Stats and note the displayed rendering lag, encoding lag, and dropped frames. If the stream is interrupted, inspect the OBS log as well. Labels and available encoder options can vary with OBS version, operating system, drivers, and hardware.
Rendering and encoding problems point to OBS or system capacity; network-dropped frames point to the connection to the streaming service. OBS explains that an increasing “Dropped frames” counter with a yellow or red connection indicator means the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to avoid viewer buffering. Lowering CPU use by itself will not fix that network problem. See the OBS dropped-frames guidance.
CPU demand depends on the encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS system requirements do not guarantee that a particular machine can sustain a particular streaming workload. A rain loop may have fewer moving elements than a game, but playback, filters, browser overlays, scaling, recording, and multiple outputs can add work depending on the setup. OBS also uses the GPU to composite and render scenes, so a GPU bottleneck can be mistaken for a CPU problem.

Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard first
OBS recommends the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point for settings suited to your hardware and configuration. In OBS, choose Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard, follow the prompts for streaming, and apply the suggested settings. The result is a baseline, not a guarantee: test it with the actual rain media, scene, and stream workload you plan to run.
Reduce output work without sacrificing more quality than necessary
Test a lower frame rate
If you are streaming at 60 FPS and OBS is struggling, test 30 FPS. Fewer frames mean less rendering and encoding work, and OBS specifically suggests trying 30 FPS when 60 FPS is not working. For a mostly static ambience scene, decide whether the rain motion looks acceptable at the lower rate; keep the lowest rate that meets your visual goal.

Test a lower output resolution
In Settings > Video, reduce the output resolution and assess the stream again. Lower output resolution can reduce rendering and encoding demand. Change the output resolution before changing the base canvas unless the system is severely resource-constrained: changing the base canvas can require repositioning sources. Make one change at a time so you can tell which setting helped.
There is no universal resolution, frame rate, CPU percentage, or expected improvement established for nonstop rain streams. The right settings depend on the hardware, encoder, source media, scene, and visual target.

Simplify the rain scene
Keep the scene limited to what the stream needs. OBS notes that sources can consume resources even when they are not visible, so hiding an unnecessary source may not be enough; remove sources you do not use.
- Keep only the active rain video and audio, essential branding, and overlays required for the stream.
- Use media sized appropriately for the output. A 4K source may be unnecessary when the stream output is lower resolution.
- Reduce or remove filters that are not essential to the look or sound.
- Reduce the number and display size of browser sources. If an overlay is static, consider using an image source instead of an animated browser overlay when that meets the design need.
Check the scene again after each change. A source that is expensive on one system may be manageable on another, so use OBS’s stats rather than assuming that any single source is the cause.

Check competing GPU load and encoder options
If OBS reports rendering trouble, check which other programs are using the GPU. OBS’s performance guidance says that on Windows, running OBS as administrator can help in many GPU-overload cases. This is GPU-specific advice, not a general fix for high CPU usage.
Hardware encoding may be worth considering if encoding—not rendering or network stability—is the problem and a compatible encoder is already available. OBS recommends trying an available hardware encoder for recordings; that guidance does not establish that every continuous stream needs a new graphics card or that a purchase will resolve every bottleneck. Before spending money, check the encoder choices in your installed OBS version and whether the actual problem is encoding. Compare only what you can verify on your own setup: CPU load, output quality at the chosen bitrate, and compatibility with your OBS and driver versions. The reviewed OBS guidance does not establish model-specific performance rankings.

Retest systematically
- Run the original scene and settings under the real stream workload, then record the OBS stats and any relevant log symptoms.
- Apply one change, such as 30 FPS, lower output resolution, or removing a source.
- Run the same workload again and compare the same indicators. Keep a change only if it improves the relevant symptom without making the stream quality unacceptable.
- If the connection indicator and dropped-frame counter show a network problem, investigate the connection and configured bitrate rather than continuing to tune CPU settings.
These steps help isolate the cause; they do not guarantee a specific performance gain or a particular duration of uninterrupted operation. OBS’s official guidance on streaming issues and system requirements is useful context. The cited OBS pages include guidance dated 2021, and settings, encoder availability, drivers, and operating-system behavior may have changed since then.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a nonstop YouTube rain ambience stream rather than running OBS on your own PC, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
