A mini PC can run an encoder that sends a prerecorded story video to YouTube Live, but the computer alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. You will need a channel enabled for live streaming, an encoder such as OBS, a reliable upload connection, and a plan for restarts and YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit. This guide covers the setup and the important limits without assuming that a particular mini PC is suitable for every resolution or unattended schedule.
What a mini PC can—and cannot—do
In this setup, the mini PC is the local computer running playback and encoder software. The encoder sends a live signal to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. YouTube lists OBS as an encoder option and says its software is available at no charge. A standalone hardware encoder is another broad option, but this guide focuses on a mini PC running software.
There is no established minimum mini PC specification in the available YouTube guidance, and it does not certify any particular model for continuous operation. Match a specific computer to the playback method, resolution, frame rate, and codec you intend to use; then test it under the actual workload. The steps below explain YouTube’s side of the workflow, not a guarantee that a computer will run without maintenance.
Before you set up the stream
Enable live streaming
Make sure live streaming is enabled on your YouTube account. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch rather than immediately before it. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Prepare the story video and rights
Choose the video or playlist you intend to play and confirm you have the rights needed to stream its video and audio. The technical encoder settings do not establish permission to use a story, soundtrack, or other material. Check the applicable rights and YouTube policies for your specific content before broadcasting. Use a representative segment with both audio and movement for the test; a static or silent test may not reveal the problems your real stream will encounter.
Check the network and operating plan
- Test the upload connection at the bitrate you plan to send. YouTube advises selecting quality based on a reliable connection; its bitrate recommendations are not a guarantee of available bandwidth.
- Plan how the mini PC and encoder will start after a power interruption, software crash, or restart. The YouTube guidance does not prescribe operating-system sleep, update, login, or crash-recovery settings, so verify these for your hardware and OS.
- If you need a continuous archive or uninterrupted handoff between broadcasts, settle that requirement before going live. YouTube’s stated automatic archive coverage is limited to streams under 12 hours.
Configure YouTube Live and the encoder
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab to create a stream, or use Manage to schedule one. Scheduling can provide a shareable URL and viewer reminders.
- Get the connection details. Find the stream URL and stream key in Live Control Room. In OBS or another encoder, choose YouTube if it is directly supported. Otherwise, enter YouTube’s stream URL as the server and paste the key into the encoder’s stream-key field. Treat the key as a credential: anyone with access may be able to send a stream to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Set output quality to suit the connection and computer. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together. YouTube automatically detects encoder settings in Live Control Room and transcodes the incoming stream to create viewer outputs for different devices and network conditions.
- Use YouTube’s encoder guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. It supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the connection to Google’s servers.
- Test before making the stream public. Start a test transmission using representative story footage and audio. Check the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room, and address warnings before the public broadcast.
- Start the broadcast. Start the encoder so it sends the signal. For a scheduled stream, wait for its preview and click Go live in Live Control Room when required by the workflow.
Choose a bitrate and resolution
The following are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, shown on its Help page as of 2026. They are guidance for the listed codec and format, not measurements of mini PC performance or a promise that an internet connection can sustain the rate.

Do not select a bitrate solely because it appears in the table. Test whether your upload connection can sustain it reliably, and confirm the chosen encoding workload works on your particular mini PC. YouTube’s published figures do not specify a mini PC CPU or GPU threshold.
Plan for the 24/7 and archive limits
A live stream and a 24/7 archive are different requirements
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That statement does not establish that a broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer will be archived, or that a longer stream can be rolled over without interruption. If viewers need a replay or a continuous archive, do not promise one based on a transmission exceeding 12 hours; confirm YouTube’s current behavior and plan a tested end-and-restart workflow that fits your needs.

Unattended operation needs device-specific checks
The encoder workflow does not cover how a specific operating system handles sleep, updates, automatic login, application startup, crashes, or heat over long periods. Test those behaviors on the chosen mini PC before relying on it for a dedicated channel. YouTube’s guidance also does not establish a restart or rollover mechanism for uninterrupted broadcasts, so test any planned handoff rather than assuming it will be seamless.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- Live streaming is unavailable: confirm the channel’s live-streaming activation is complete. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The encoder will not connect: verify that the server field contains the stream URL and that the stream key is current and entered in the correct field. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the saved key.
- Stream health warns of instability: compare the selected bitrate with upload capacity and test again using a reliable connection. Reduce the selected output quality if the connection cannot sustain the chosen rate.
- The video looks poor or viewers report buffering: review the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate together, then inspect the preview and stream health. YouTube transcodes incoming video for viewers, but that does not correct an unstable incoming signal.
- The scheduled stream is not public yet: check for the incoming preview in Live Control Room and complete the required Go live action.
- You expect a replay from a long broadcast: the stated automatic archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours. Verify current platform behavior for longer broadcasts and do not assume an uninterrupted rollover or archive.
