To relay a Shoutcast station to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, connect FFmpeg to the station’s actual audio stream URL, then send the compatible audio feed to the ingest URL and stream key for a YouTube Live event. The exact command depends on the station’s URL, authentication, audio codec, FFmpeg build, and YouTube event settings, so inspect both endpoints before choosing stream copy or transcoding.
What you need before starting
- A Shoutcast-compatible stream URL from the station operator, including any required path, mount information, or authentication.
- A computer that can run FFmpeg and maintain a network connection for the duration of the relay.
- A YouTube Live event with its ingest URL and private stream key, available in Live Control Room.
This is a relay, not a connection to a microphone or camera: FFmpeg reads the station’s network stream and publishes it to YouTube. Shoutcast/ICY metadata requests are supported by FFmpeg, but that does not mean every station exposes useful metadata or follows the same URL format. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.
1. Find and inspect the station stream
Get the direct stream URL from the station operator rather than assuming its website or player URL is usable. Station addresses can differ, and some require credentials or a particular path. Test the address with the FFmpeg build you plan to use; a probe such as ffprobe can help identify the media streams and audio codec. Record what it reports before deciding how to send the audio.
If the URL requires authentication, treat credentials as secrets. Do not publish them in a command, log, screenshot, or article. If the probe cannot connect, first verify the URL and access requirements with the operator.

2. Create the YouTube Live event and get its ingest details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or configure the live event.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that event. YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions describe the event setup and ingest details.
- For encrypted ingest, use the RTMPS URL provided by YouTube. RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event.
Use the endpoint and key for the specific event you intend to broadcast. Don’t substitute a URL or key from another event, and don’t assume a key is interchangeable across configurations.
3. Choose stream copy or audio transcoding
Use stream copy only when the formats are compatible
Stream copy forwards packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding them. It avoids a new encode, but only works when the input stream and the selected YouTube ingest setup are compatible. It also cannot apply filters. FFmpeg explains this in its command documentation.

For an audio-only source, compatibility must be checked particularly carefully: the available evidence does not establish that every YouTube event configuration accepts every audio-only feed. Confirm the current event settings and verify the result in Live Control Room rather than assuming a generic command will work.
Transcode when conversion is needed
If the source codec or stream format cannot be passed through compatibly, configure FFmpeg to decode and encode the audio in a format accepted by the selected YouTube ingest configuration. Check YouTube’s current requirements and the station’s actual source before selecting a codec, bitrate, sample rate, or channel layout. There is no single universal audio recipe established for every Shoutcast station and YouTube event.

4. Build the FFmpeg command for your endpoints
Once you have verified the input URL, source codec, event ingest URL, and stream key, substitute them into a command appropriate to your setup. The following is a structure, not a ready-to-run command; the placeholders are not real endpoints or credentials:
ffmpeg -i "<SHOUTCAST_STREAM_URL>" -c:a copy -f flv "<YOUTUBE_RTMPS_INGEST_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"
That example is only suitable if the input audio can be passed through and the destination accepts the resulting feed. If not, replace stream copy with an audio encode configured to match the current YouTube event requirements. Do not paste a real stream key into a public script or share it in a support request. The command may also need adjustment for the station’s authentication, metadata behavior, FFmpeg build, or event configuration; no generic command can account for all of those differences.

5. Preview the feed before starting the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg with the verified station URL and the correct event ingest details.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview for a received feed, audible audio, and any relevant metadata behavior.
- If the preview is missing, silent, or rejected, stop and check the input probe, codec compatibility, ingest URL, stream key, and event settings before starting the broadcast.
- Start the broadcast according to the event’s settings once the preview behaves as intended.
Keeping the relay connected
FFmpeg documents reconnection options for network errors and streamed inputs, as well as treating end-of-file as an error for sources expected to continue indefinitely. These options can help when the station input drops, but they cannot guarantee uninterrupted service or recover every failure. Their behavior depends on the failure, the station, and the FFmpeg build; test the exact setup. See the protocol documentation and command documentation.
A local FFmpeg relay also depends on the computer and its network staying available. For an always-on setup, that is a practical constraint: the process must continue running, and a local power or connection outage can interrupt it.

RTMPS or HLS?

YouTube documents its HLS setup separately in its HLS ingestion instructions. Choose the protocol your event and encoder setup support; do not assume RTMPS settings can be reused for HLS.
