Keep OBS sending a continuous feed to YouTube, and switch the video inside OBS. Create a scene for each prerecorded video, then select a different scene while the stream remains live. Do not click End Stream or stop OBS output when you only want to change what viewers see.
How switching videos works
YouTube receives the broadcast from your encoder—in this setup, OBS. The stream can continue while the encoder changes which video appears in its output. YouTube’s encoder guidance treats ending a live event as a separate action: end the stream and stop the encoder feed. For an ordinary content change, leave OBS streaming and change its program output instead. YouTube Help explains the encoder workflow.
Switch between individual videos with OBS scenes
- Create a scene for each clip. In OBS, add a scene for each prerecorded video you want to show. Add the relevant local file to that scene as a Media Source.
- Set playback behavior. In the Media Source properties, enable Restart playback when source becomes active if you want the clip to start from the beginning each time its scene becomes active. OBS documents this behavior for a source that is in the current scene and visible.
- Start the stream and check the preview. Start streaming through OBS, then wait for the feed to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview.
- Switch scenes while OBS stays live. Select the scene containing the next video. OBS changes the output sent to YouTube; do not stop the encoder or end the YouTube event.
OBS’s media-source reference describes local media and activation-triggered playback behavior: OBS Media Sources. Exact labels or behavior may vary by OBS version.
Choose scenes or a playlist

Use separate scenes when you need direct operator control over which clip is on screen. Use a VLC Video playlist when you want files played from a playlist, and select loop or shuffle behavior to suit it. OBS documents both source approaches in its media-source reference.

Test the video and audio before relying on the switch
- Run a private or unlisted test before a public broadcast.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview after starting and after changing scenes.
- Confirm that both the intended video and its audio reach the stream. A scene change can show the right picture while audio routing is wrong.
- While live, monitor stream health and audio/video quality. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring the encoder feed; see YouTube’s live streaming tips.
These steps describe documented OBS and YouTube behavior, not a guarantee for every computer, OBS version, audio setup, or connection. Stream settings such as auto-start and auto-stop can also affect how encoder actions interact with the live event; check the settings for the specific stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover starting and ending a stream.
Troubleshoot a video switch

What to know about YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube Help states that “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” This does not establish what will happen to streams lasting longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
