You can use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play a Punjabi Bhangra playlist on YouTube, loop it, and send the program through a live encoder. Before going live, verify that every M3U entry works, secure live-stream rights for every recording, and test the loop and stream health. An M3U playlist is a playback list; it is not, by itself, YouTube’s HLS ingest format.
Before setting up the stream: confirm rights and playlist access
Get permission for live rebroadcast
Having a song in a playlist, or being able to play it in VLC, does not grant permission to rebroadcast it. Confirm that your rights cover YouTube live streaming, the territories where the stream will be available, and any archive you intend to keep. Keep a copy of the license or written permission.
YouTube Help says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If YouTube detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image and warn you to stop using the content; leaving the material in the stream can lead to interruption or termination. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a stream. If you have licensed the music, ask the relevant rightsholder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that a stream can still be interrupted without allowlisting even when you have a license or geographic restrictions.
Decide separately whether to archive the broadcast. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream completes if you choose to archive it, so confirm that your permission covers the archive as well as the live use. A consumer music subscription, public playlist, or accessible M3U URL is not evidence of rebroadcast rights.

Check what the M3U file points to
An ordinary M3U media playlist tells a player which items to play. Its entries may refer to local files or network media, and the playlist can depend on paths or URLs that are unavailable on the computer running OBS. Open the actual playlist in the VLC installation OBS will use and confirm that every item resolves and plays. Do not assume every M3U variant, relative path, authenticated link, or provider-generated URL will work in OBS.
For a 24/7 program, test the playlist from its first entry through the end and back to the beginning. Check audio, video, transitions, and any gaps before relying on it unattended. Remote media adds a dependency on the network and on the remote source remaining available.
Set up and test the playlist in OBS
Install compatible VLC and add a VLC Video source
- Install VLC if the VLC Video source is not available in OBS. OBS documents that a 64-bit OBS installation needs 64-bit VLC.
- In your OBS scene, add a VLC Video source. Use this source for a playlist; a basic Media Source is intended for a supported single media file and has a single-file loop option.
- Add the media items from your playlist and confirm that the order is the one you intend. OBS documents playlist support in the VLC Video source, but does not promise that every external M3U format will import or resolve identically. Validate your own file and paths in the installed versions.
- Choose whether to shuffle. For a predictable sequence, leave shuffle off; for randomized playback, turn it on and verify the resulting behavior.
- Enable Loop Playlist. It is on by default in OBS’s documented VLC source settings, but check the actual setting rather than relying on the default.
- Review the source’s visibility behavior. Depending on its setting, playback can stop when the source is hidden, pause and resume, or keep playing. For a continuous single-scene stream, keep the source visible and test what happens if you switch scenes or hide it.
Play through the complete list at least once before the broadcast. Make sure the final item transitions back to the start as expected, and listen for silence, unexpected gaps, or abrupt level changes. A playlist that works on one machine or in one player is not automatically validated for the OBS configuration you will leave running.

Create the YouTube broadcast and configure the encoder
Choose the broadcast and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast you intend to use and locate its stream key.
- Enter that key in the streaming configuration in OBS. Treat it as a password: do not publish it or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube before the next broadcast.
- Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest path for the normal OBS workflow. RTMPS is the encrypted extension of RTMP.
- Start with a test broadcast or an appropriately private/unlisted test setup, then confirm the picture and sound at YouTube before making the program public.
Set video, audio, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS settings support H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and up to 60 frames per second. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Use settings supported by your encoder and choose a quality your upload connection can sustain reliably.
Bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single correct value for every stream. As examples from YouTube’s current recommendations accessed in 2026, H.264 at 1080p30 lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, while H.264 at 720p30 lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. Those are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular home connection will remain stable at that rate. Select the exact format you plan to send, check YouTube’s corresponding recommendation, and test with representative movement and audio.
Monitor YouTube’s stream health during testing and review any warnings it reports. A format that appears clean in OBS can still have problems at ingest if the upload connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate.

Do not confuse an M3U playlist with YouTube HLS ingestion
The playlist used by OBS’s VLC Video source and the playlist syntax used in HLS delivery serve different purposes. Your M3U media list selects recordings for playback. YouTube HLS ingestion is an encoder protocol for uploading a live stream in media segments; an ordinary M3U file is not a substitute for that process.
Use RTMPS for the usual OBS setup unless you deliberately choose an encoder configured for YouTube HLS ingestion. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies TS segments sent using HTTPS POST/PUT, segment durations of one to four seconds, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP. These are ingestion requirements, not settings to apply to the M3U file that feeds your VLC playlist.

- Play representative tracks and confirm that picture and audio reach YouTube as expected.
- Observe at least one transition between playlist items and the transition from the final item back to the beginning.
- Check stream health and encoder warnings during the test, and adjust quality if the upload connection cannot sustain it.
- Confirm the chosen playlist order or shuffle behavior and the VLC source’s behavior when hidden or when scenes change.
- Decide whether the stream should be archived and verify that the music rights include that use.
- Plan how you will respond if the computer, power, network, OBS, or YouTube stream fails. The documented settings do not establish guaranteed uninterrupted operation or a maximum continuous-session duration for this particular setup.
A 24/7 stream depends on the source files, host computer, power, network, encoder, and YouTube’s operation. Test for a meaningful period and have a recovery plan; do not treat a successful short test as proof of indefinite uptime.

Common problems and fixes
The VLC Video source is missing
Install VLC and restart or reopen OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC, as specified in OBS’s documentation.
The playlist loads but some tracks do not play
Open the M3U file in VLC and check the failing entry itself. Confirm that local paths still exist and that any network media URL is accessible to the computer running OBS. Relative paths, authentication requirements, and provider-specific playlist formats may not resolve as expected.
The playlist stops at the last item
Check that Loop Playlist is enabled in the VLC Video source. Test the end-to-start transition in OBS before going live; do not infer loop behavior from the playlist opening successfully.

Playback stops after a scene or visibility change
Inspect the VLC source’s visibility behavior. Configure it to keep playing, pause/resume, or stop when hidden according to the intended scene setup, then test the exact behavior you will use on air.
YouTube reports poor stream health or the live picture buffers
Review the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s recommendation for that exact format. If the upload connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, lower the output quality and test again. Keep CBR enabled and check the keyframe interval against YouTube’s two-second recommendation (not over four seconds).
The stream is interrupted for a copyright match
Stop using the matched material unless you have the necessary rights. If you are licensed, contact the rightsholder to request Content ID allowlisting for your channel, and make sure the agreement covers the live use and any archive. A license alone does not ensure that YouTube will avoid interrupting a channel that is not allowlisted.
