Usually, no—not as a dependable, unattended replacement. An Android TV box may be worth testing if you already own one and can keep a compatible encoder active, but Android TV’s app-lifecycle guidance says most apps must stop foreground services when the user leaves. The guidance does not certify arbitrary boxes or streaming apps for continuous operation. A VPS is a more natural fit for an unattended process, though its reliability and total cost still depend on the provider and your setup.
Why an Android TV box is not a drop-in VPS
YouTube supports encoder-based live streams, including streams sent from software or standalone hardware. The encoder needs YouTube’s server URL and stream key. That establishes that an encoder can deliver a stream; it does not establish that an Android TV box can keep that encoder running unattended. YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance covers the connection details, while Android TV’s foreground-service guidance describes a key lifecycle limitation.
Android TV and Google TV guidance allows an audio app to continue a foreground service after the user leaves only to keep playing its audio track. For other apps, the guidance says foreground services must stop when the user leaves. A manufacturer-specific implementation or other configuration might behave differently, but the cited documentation does not establish that any arbitrary box will keep a video encoder alive in the background.
Android’s broader background-execution rules also note that restrictions are determined by the device manufacturer. In the documented restricted AOSP case, a background app may be prevented from starting foreground services, and existing foreground services may be removed from the foreground. The practical result is model- and software-specific behavior—not a reliable general rule that an Android TV box can run a 24/7 stream. Android TV box vs. VPS: what you would need to compare
Neither option is automatically cheap or reliable. The following are the factors to check, not measured comparative results:

The official material cited here does not establish device uptime, power draw, encoding throughput, VPS rates, or a total-cost winner. To make a fair cost comparison, gather local prices for the hardware, electricity, internet, accessories, and server plan, then account for the time needed to monitor and recover the stream.

How to evaluate a box you already own
Treat the setup as an experiment on the exact device and software version, not as a general capability of Android TV. Before buying hardware for this job, check that the box supports a suitable encoder and output format, can sustain encoding without overheating or closing the app, and has enough sustained upload bandwidth for your stream.
- Configure a compatible encoder. In its streaming settings, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe those requirements. Do not share or expose the stream key.
- Run a supervised soak test. Keep the encoder in the state you expect to use and watch for interruptions, app closure, overheating, or loss of connection. A successful test while the app remains onscreen does not establish that it will continue after you leave.
- Test the failure cases deliberately. Observe what happens when you leave the app, lose network access, restore the connection, and power-cycle the box. Check whether the encoder reconnects and whether the stream resumes without manual action.
- Decide whether the observed behavior meets your requirement. If streaming only continues while the encoder is onscreen, count on a dedicated session and monitoring rather than unattended operation. If unattended service is essential, use a host designed for unattended processes or verify a supported, model-specific workaround before relying on the box.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance
YouTube’s cited guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not infer from that statement that a stream running continuously for 24 hours or longer will be archived automatically. If preserving a replay matters, plan around shorter sessions or confirm the expected behavior in your channel’s current Live Control Room. This archive consideration is the same whether the encoder runs locally or on a VPS.
