Generate an episode order that excludes the episode played immediately before each choice, save that order as an ffconcat script, then give the script to FFmpeg. The method below creates one shuffled output; continuous playback needs a playlist generator or player that applies the same rule at each boundary.
Choose the right kind of shuffle
First decide whether you need one concatenated video or an ongoing player. A generated list can prevent an immediate repeat within that list. It cannot provide fresh randomness after a finite output ends. For continuous playback, the process that supplies the next episode must retain the last episode played and exclude it from the next choice.
- One output file: generate the order once, then concatenate that order.
- Ongoing playback: have an external playlist generator or player choose episodes dynamically, applying the no-adjacent-repeat rule across playlist reloads and restarts.
Generate an order with no adjacent repeats
Collect the episodes eligible for the run, then randomize them with the constraint that each selected episode differs from the one immediately before it. If each episode appears exactly once, you can shuffle repeatedly and check for adjacent duplicates, or use a constrained selection algorithm that chooses from the remaining episodes other than the previous choice whenever possible.
If episodes have different repeat counts, the rule may not always be satisfiable. For a multiset of episodes, the most frequent episode must have no more remaining copies than all other episodes combined plus one. If that condition fails, no ordering can prevent every immediate repeat; reduce the count of the most frequent episode or accept an adjacent repeat.

Write the order as an ffconcat script
Put the chosen paths into a text file, one file directive per episode. The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 for automatic format recognition.

Paths containing spaces or special characters need quoting or escaping that follows ffconcat script syntax; verify the resulting file directives if FFmpeg reports a parse or file-opening error. The concat demuxer reads the script’s files one after another, so the order in this file is the order in the output. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Concatenate compatible episodes without re-encoding
If the inputs have compatible streams and properties, including codecs and time bases, use the concat demuxer with stream copy:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat -map 0 -c copy shuffled.mp4Run the command from the directory containing playlist.ffconcat, or provide its full path. -safe 0 permits paths that do not meet the demuxer’s default safe-path rules, so use it only with a playlist you control. -map 0 maps the input’s streams, and -c copy copies them without re-encoding. The output is a single file in the listed order, not a live random playlist.

The demuxer expects the files to have matching streams and properties. If stream layouts, codecs, or time bases differ, stream-copy concatenation may fail or produce a problematic output. Incorrect duration information can also cause timestamp gaps or other artifacts. The documentation describes duration directives where needed; otherwise, use a workflow that normalizes the inputs. Consult the demuxer documentation for script syntax and compatibility details.
Use the concat filter when conversion is needed
When episodes are not suitable for demuxer stream copy, or you need to re-encode them to a consistent format, use FFmpeg’s concat filter workflow instead. The filter joins decoded streams, so the inputs must be made compatible for the filter and output; choose the required video and audio settings for your files rather than assuming one universal command. Keep the rule working during continuous playback
A one-time output only enforces the rule within its generated list. For an ongoing player, maintain the identity of the last episode played when generating the next item or playlist, and exclude that episode from the next selection. Apply the same check when a playlist ends, reloads, or playback restarts; otherwise, the final episode of one list can repeat as the first episode of the next.
The exact integration depends on the player and whether it accepts dynamic playlists. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer itself consumes a fixed listed order; it does not make new random choices during playback.

Troubleshoot common problems
- Episodes remain in their original order: the playlist generator did not change the order, or FFmpeg is reading a different script than the one you edited. Check the
filelines in the script actually passed to-i. - The same episode appears twice in a row: the generated order was not checked against the previous selection. Validate each neighboring pair before writing the script; for continuous playback, carry the last played episode across playlist boundaries.
- FFmpeg cannot parse the script or open a file: check that the header is exactly
ffconcat version 1.0on the first line, then verify every path and its quoting or escaping. - Stream copy fails or the joined output has timestamp artifacts: inspect whether the inputs have matching streams and properties and whether duration information is accurate. Use appropriate duration directives if needed, or normalize and concatenate with the filter when re-encoding is acceptable.
