What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A UPS or inverter can keep your radio playout equipment, encoder and network gear powered during a local outage—but it cannot keep an internet connection alive if the ISP’s equipment or last-mile network also loses power. Reliable continuity means planning for two separate things: power at your station and an available route to YouTube.
What you need to keep running
Start by tracing the audio and network paths at your station. The exact setup varies, but a typical chain may include an audio source or playout computer, an audio interface, a streaming computer or hardware encoder, a router, a modem or optical network terminal (ONT), and any network switch the connection uses.
A backup only helps the devices plugged into it. If the encoder stays on but the router or ONT loses power, the stream may still disconnect. If the network stays up but the computer generating the audio shuts down, there is no program to send. Write down every device needed to produce and transmit your stream before choosing a battery backup.
Choose backup power for your actual load
Decide which parts of the chain must remain on, then estimate their combined power draw and how long you need them to run. A small UPS may suit a router and modem; a computer or hardware encoder may need a larger UPS or an inverter. There is no universal wattage, capacity or runtime recommendation: those depend on your equipment, battery condition and outage target.

Check these details before buying
- Which devices must stay powered for the stream to continue, including the router, modem or ONT?
- What is the measured or specified load of those devices together?
- How long do you want the backup to last, and can it support that load for the full duration?
- Will it switch over automatically, and can you replace the battery or get local service?
For a router-and-modem backup, a UPS for a Wi-Fi router and modem is one category to consider. Size it for the devices you will actually connect and the runtime you need; the product category alone does not guarantee a particular duration.
Plan for internet separately
Keeping your station powered does not guarantee that your ISP’s network, last-mile equipment or mobile service remains available. During a controlled test, observe whether your wired connection continues working when mains power is removed from your premises.

A secondary ISP or mobile broadband connection may help only if it is genuinely independent of the primary connection and has usable service at your station. Compare the infrastructure each depends on, on-site signal, measured upload performance, data limits and how the connection would switch over. Do not assume automatic failover: the available guidance does not establish a universal handover method or guarantee that a change of connection will preserve an encoder session.
Configure and test the YouTube stream
YouTube supports encoder-based livestreaming. The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder stream in advance, checking its preview, monitoring stream health and testing failover.

- Check your channel and event in YouTube Studio. Confirm that live streaming is available for the channel and set up the intended stream or event ahead of the outage test.
- Connect the encoder and preview the program. Check that the radio audio reaches the encoder at the intended level and that the stream preview behaves as expected.
- Choose a quality your connection can sustain. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure you choose a quality that will result in a reliable stream based on your internet connection.” Run an upload-speed test and test the actual stream rather than relying only on a nominal plan speed.
- Use YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate figures as configuration guidance. YouTube’s encoder settings table, accessed in 2026, recommends 5 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps, 10 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are encoder recommendations, not proof that a connection with the same nominal upload speed will be stable. Test your real stream under the conditions you expect to operate in.
- Use secure ingestion where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. Follow the protocol and server details shown for your stream in YouTube Studio.
- Check both the encoder and the outbound connection. If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy but viewers cannot receive the stream reliably, the outbound internet connection may be the problem. Watch stream health in YouTube Studio and check the public player.
The National Informatics Centre’s webcast-service prerequisites specify dedicated network bandwidth of 2–4 Mbps per stream. That figure applies to the NIC webcast service context; it is not a YouTube bitrate recommendation or a general Indian broadband requirement.
Run a simulated power-cut test
Test the whole chain before depending on it during an outage. YouTube’s failover guidance includes interrupting the primary encoder—for example, by stopping it or disconnecting its Ethernet cable—and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup encoder.

- Start the intended radio program and YouTube stream, then check the encoder output, stream health and public player.
- Simulate the loss of mains power at the station using a controlled procedure appropriate for your equipment. Confirm that every device required for the stream remains powered by its backup.
- Check that the router, modem or ONT and any required switch remain on, then confirm that the outbound connection still works.
- If you have a configured backup encoder, interrupt the primary and confirm that the public player rolls over to the backup as expected.
- Verify the live event from the channel or watch page and from mobile devices. Monitor audio and video continuously during the test.
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. Its troubleshooting guidance distinguishes encoder operation from outbound internet strength: a healthy-looking encoder does not rule out a connection problem. Keep an operator able to respond rather than treating the backup equipment as a substitute for monitoring.

| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder stops when mains power fails. | The encoder or another required device is not connected to backup power, or the backup cannot support its load. | Trace the equipment chain, connect each required device to the appropriate backup and retest with the actual load. |
| The encoder stays on, but the YouTube stream drops. | The router, modem, ONT, switch or ISP-side network may have lost power or connectivity. | Check each local network device and test the outbound connection during a controlled outage. Consider a genuinely independent secondary connection only after checking its local availability and performance. |
| The stream is unstable even though the encoder is running. | The available upload connection may not reliably support the selected quality. | Run an upload-speed test, choose a more suitable quality and inspect YouTube’s stream-health indicators during a live test. |
| A backup encoder does not take over. | Failover may not be configured as expected, or the player may not be receiving the backup. | Use YouTube’s recommended test: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player rolls over to the backup. |
| The stream appears healthy in the encoder but viewers have trouble. | The problem may be on the outbound internet path rather than in the encoder output. | Check YouTube stream health and test outbound internet strength; verify the public player separately. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your program is prerecorded radio content packaged as an uploaded video, StreamNeo can loop that upload on YouTube from the cloud. It does not relay a live internet-radio feed or stream from a camera, so it is not a replacement for a station’s live audio source. For supported prerecorded programming, the steps are upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the cloud stream to continue. StreamNeo supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo to see how it works, or start the free first day.

Protect the programming as well as the connection
A technically stable stream does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast every recording. Check that your station has permission to use the music and other material in its YouTube livestream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before relying on a playlist or repeat broadcast. A successful power-backup test cannot prevent a stream interruption or restriction caused by a content-rights issue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does keeping the station powered guarantee that YouTube will stay live?
No. Power backup addresses the equipment at your station; the internet route to YouTube is a separate dependency.
Can I use the NIC 2–4 Mbps figure to set my YouTube encoder?
No. That bandwidth figure is stated for the NIC webcast service, not as a YouTube encoder setting.
Can StreamNeo carry my live internet-radio feed?
No. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos on YouTube; it does not relay a live radio feed.
