YouTube Live Stuttering at 60fps? Bitrate and Encoder Settings to Check

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your YouTube Live stream stutters at 60 fps, first match the encoder’s bitrate to the resolution and codec you are sending, then check whether OBS reports dropped frames. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations are 12 Mbps for 1080p60, 34 Mbps for 1440p60, and 50 Mbps for 2160p60. Those are ingest recommendations—not guarantees that your upload connection, encoder, or viewers can sustain smooth playback.

Start with the right 60 fps bitrate

There is no single bitrate for every 60 fps stream. The recommended target changes with the resolution sent to YouTube and the video codec. The following figures are YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations, inspected October 3, 2026; they are not a promise of performance on a particular connection or device. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Ingest resolution at 60 fps H.264 recommended bitrate AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate
720p60 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 12 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps 24 Mbps
2160p/4K60 50 Mbps 35 Mbps

YouTube also lists minimum bitrate values. At 1080p60, its listed minimums are 6 Mbps for H.264 and 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265; at 1440p60, 8 and 6 Mbps; at 2160p60, 14 and 10 Mbps, respectively. A minimum is not the same as a recommended target, and neither figure tells you what your upload path can hold steadily.

Choose a resolution and frame rate that suit the game, your encoder, your sustained upload capacity, and your audience. If your connection or system cannot reliably support 60 fps at the chosen resolution, test a lower resolution or frame rate rather than treating 60 fps as mandatory.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set the encoder basics in OBS

YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Codec availability in OBS depends on the encoder and stream setup you have. For the settings YouTube specifies, use this checklist:

  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Bitrate: Set a target appropriate to the ingest resolution and codec in the table above, then confirm your upload can sustain it.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS, using the server and stream key provided by YouTube.
  • Frame rate: Up to 60 fps is supported. Use 60 only if the encoder and upload route can deliver it reliably.

Do not assume a particular CPU preset, GPU encoder, or encoder-quality option is a universal stutter fix. The available evidence does not establish a single best setting for every PC. Diagnose the type of missed frames in OBS before changing hardware or encoder settings.

Run a representative test before going live

  1. Check the actual output. In OBS, confirm the output resolution, frame rate, codec, rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Compare them with YouTube’s recommendations for the resolution and codec you are ingesting.
  2. Check upload stability. Run a speed test, but do not treat one speed-test result as proof that the connection can hold the target bitrate throughout a broadcast. Other traffic and connection variation can affect sustained capacity.
  3. Test the real workload. Before the event, run a private or unlisted test with audio and on-screen movement similar to the intended stream. YouTube specifically advises testing with comparable audio and movement; monitor OBS statistics and YouTube stream-health messages while the test runs. The test guidance is in YouTube Help.
  4. Record what happens. Note when the stutter occurs and capture the OBS statistics or log. Whether frames are dropped, missed during rendering, or missed during encoding points to different areas to investigate.

If OBS shows dropped frames

OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the bitrate. That points first to the connection between OBS and YouTube’s ingest server, rather than proving that the PC cannot encode the scene. OBS’s guidance is in Stream Connection Troubleshooting (September 30, 2024).

  • Lower the video bitrate. OBS suggests trying a lower bitrate that the connection can maintain. Its guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic—not a guaranteed safe value. Sustained stability matters more than a brief peak reading.
  • Try another ingest server if available. A different route to the remote server may help identify a connection-path problem.
  • Test a wired connection. If you are on Wi-Fi, connect by Ethernet and compare the same test. OBS recommends wired connectivity when Wi-Fi may be unstable.
  • Check network interference and equipment methodically. VPN, security, or network-prioritization software can interfere. OBS also lists outdated network drivers and possible faults involving the modem, router, cables, network cards, switches, or extenders. Change one variable at a time; if you suspect faulty network equipment and are unsure, contact your ISP before replacing hardware.
  • Ask the ISP if the connection problem persists. If the OBS connection checks do not resolve it, OBS recommends contacting the ISP.

If OBS has no dropped frames but viewers report buffering

Broadcaster-side stability does not guarantee that every viewer can play the stream smoothly. Viewers use different networks, devices, and locations; a high input bitrate or resolution may be difficult for some of them. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but viewers’ bandwidth and devices still differ. If reports continue, test a lower input resolution, bitrate, or frame rate and consider the needs of the audience. OBS’s viewer-side guidance is in Stream Buffering Troubleshooting (June 9, 2021).

If the issue looks like rendering or encoding lag

When OBS does not report connection drops, but its statistics or log show missed frames attributed to rendering or encoding, investigate that local workload separately. Capture the OBS log from a test where the problem occurs, and note your system and encoder model, output resolution, and whether OBS attributes the missed frames to rendering or encoding. Then reduce output demands one variable at a time and retest. Without those details, prescribing a particular encoder preset, hardware encoder, or PC upgrade would be guesswork.
