How to Run a 24/7 Fireplace Ambience Stream with FFmpeg on Ubuntu

You can loop a fireplace video with FFmpeg on Ubuntu and publish it to a live platform over RTMP. For a dependable 24/7 setup, use one combined video-and-audio file first, keep the stream key out of your service file and repository, supervise FFmpeg with systemd, and check the platform’s own preview—not just whether the process is running. Confirm the destination’s current ingest URL and encoding requirements before going live; they can change.

What you need before starting

  • An Ubuntu host that can remain powered on and connected to the internet. Continuous encoding and uploading use local resources, so check CPU, storage, and network capacity on the actual machine.
  • A fireplace video with its audio already combined, or separate media files with a plan for synchronization and looping.
  • Permission to broadcast both the footage and crackling audio. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, and keep the applicable license records. Finding a file online does not establish that it is safe to rebroadcast.
  • A live-stream destination account and its current ingest URL, stream key, and encoder guidance. Confirm these in the platform’s own current controls and documentation rather than assuming a URL or preset will remain valid.
  • FFmpeg with the required encoders available. Ubuntu package contents and FFmpeg builds vary, so verify the installed build and encoders on the target host.

Install and check FFmpeg

Install FFmpeg using the Ubuntu package source you intend to maintain, or use another deliberate installation method. Then check the installed binary and available encoders before composing a command:

ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders

FFmpeg can read, filter, convert, and output audio and video. Its command-line and protocol documentation describes input looping and RTMP publishing, including FLV output; consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation and FFmpeg protocol documentation for the options supported by your build.

Prepare a continuous loop

Start with one combined file

A single file containing both fireplace visuals and sound is the simplest design. Place -stream_loop -1 before the input filename so FFmpeg loops that input indefinitely:

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/fireplace.mp4 [encoding and output options] -f flv "[current RTMP ingest URL]/[stream key]"

This is a command shape, not a universal ready-to-run preset. Replace the bracketed portions only after checking the destination’s current ingest instructions and the encoders available in your FFmpeg build. FFmpeg documents RTMP output using FLV, but the exact endpoint, codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval are destination-specific and are not established here. Do not copy an old third-party command as if it were guaranteed current.

Use separate audio and video only with deliberate synchronization

If the fireplace picture and crackling sound are separate files, their durations and loop points may differ. Design the inputs and filters so the audio remains synchronized with the video and transitions are acceptable; test the complete loop rather than assuming independent looping will stay seamless. A community implementation describes using separate playlists and also reports an audio demuxer failure in that deployment. That is an implementation anecdote, not evidence of a general FFmpeg defect or a proven fix. A playlist can add variety, but it also means checking each transition, total duration, and recovery behavior.

Protect the stream key

Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put a real key in a public command example, source-controlled script, or service file that others can read. The community implementation’s documentation likewise warns users not to commit a real YouTube stream key. Store the credential through a protected mechanism appropriate to your host, restrict access to it, and insert it into the process at runtime. If it has been exposed, rotate it using the destination platform’s current controls.

Run FFmpeg under systemd

A systemd service can start FFmpeg at boot and restart the process after a failure. Run it as a dedicated unprivileged user, start it after network readiness where appropriate, and send output to the journal or another log location you can inspect. Keep secrets outside the public unit file. The command below shows the service structure; use your own protected credential mechanism and a destination-verified FFmpeg command rather than pasting a real key into ExecStart.

Restrict permissions on the environment file so only the service account and administrators who need it can read the credential. Confirm the FFmpeg path with command -v ffmpeg; the example path may not match an Ubuntu package installation. After creating and reviewing the unit, load it and test it:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now fireplace-stream.service
sudo systemctl status fireplace-stream.service
sudo journalctl -u fireplace-stream.service -f

Before relying on it, test a manual start, a stop and restart, and behavior after reboot. A restart policy can recover a failed process; it cannot guarantee that the platform is receiving a healthy stream.

Verify the stream at both ends

Check local service health and the viewer-facing stream. A process can remain active while the incoming stream or public player is stalled, so a green systemctl status alone is not proof that viewers can watch.

  • Inspect systemctl status fireplace-stream.service and journalctl -u fireplace-stream.service for exits, repeated restarts, input errors, and output errors.
  • Watch CPU use, disk space, and network connectivity on the Ubuntu host. An encode can fail or fall behind if the machine is overloaded or the connection is unstable.
  • Use the destination’s incoming-stream health or preview controls, then check the viewer-facing player to confirm audio and video are arriving and remain continuous.
  • Recheck the stream after a reboot and after any change to the media file, FFmpeg build, network, stream key, or destination settings.

Troubleshoot common failures

FFmpeg exits immediately

Read the service journal for the first error. Check that the input path exists and is readable by the service user, the FFmpeg binary path is correct, the requested encoders are available, and the output options match the installed build. Test the command interactively without exposing the stream key in shell history or logs.

The service is active, but the platform preview is empty or frozen

Check the destination’s ingest URL and key, the output format and codecs, and the platform’s incoming-stream status. Confirm that the local process is not merely alive but repeatedly failing to deliver usable media; restart-on-failure does not detect every stalled output condition.

The stream drops when the host loses network access

Review journal entries and network status, then confirm that systemd restarts FFmpeg after the failure and that FFmpeg reconnects using the destination’s currently supported endpoint and options. Verify recovery in the platform preview and public player, not only in the service status.

Audio drifts, cuts, or fails at a loop boundary

Prefer a combined audio-video file for the first version. For separate files, inspect their durations, synchronization, and loop transitions and test long enough to catch boundary problems. Do not assume an anecdotal workaround from another deployment is a general fix.

The stream key may have leaked

Rotate it in the destination’s current controls, update the protected credential on the Ubuntu host, restart the service, and verify the new stream in the platform preview. Remove exposed copies from repositories or logs where possible, but treat the old key as compromised until it has been invalidated.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want an Ubuntu computer and home connection to stay on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the uploaded video and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.
