For a cautious first test on BSNL broadband, try OBS at 1280×720, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, and 3,000–4,000 kbps video bitrate, with AAC stereo audio at 128 kbps and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendation for 720p30 live ingestion is 3 Mbps; the slightly wider range is a practical starting point, not a BSNL-specific tested result. Your reliable upload capacity—not your advertised download speed—determines whether it will hold.
Recommended OBS settings to try first
This setup is a conservative starting configuration for a YouTube playlist stream. It is not a guarantee that every BSNL connection can sustain it: broadband performance can differ by plan, location, access technology, Wi-Fi, congestion, and time of day.

If your playlist is mostly static slides, text, or a slowly moving image, 720p30 is a sensible first test. Faster movement may look better with more bitrate, but increase it only if the connection remains stable and OBS is not accumulating dropped frames.
YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations for live streams
YouTube’s published live-ingestion recommendations distinguish resolution and frame rate. These are platform recommendations, not measurements of what a particular BSNL line can sustain. YouTube also lists the minimum recommendations shown below; they are not targets that guarantee a stable stream.

For live video, YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (which must not exceed four seconds), 128 kbps audio for stereo, and Rec. 709 for SDR. H.264, AAC stereo, and RTMPS where available make a broadly compatible first configuration. These are live-ingest settings; do not substitute YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos.
Set up the playlist stream in OBS
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube, and enter the stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not share or publish it.
- Set the output bitrates. Open Settings → Output and set streaming video bitrate to 3,000–4,000 kbps for the first test. Set audio bitrate to 128 kbps. OBS’s bitrate guidance is to account for the connection’s upload capacity and the streaming service’s limits.
- Set the output resolution and frame rate. In Settings → Video, set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720 and Common FPS Value to 30. OBS separates the canvas resolution from the scaled stream output resolution; check that you are changing the output value.
- Check the encoder settings. Use H.264, set rate control to CBR, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds. Set Rec. 709 for SDR if configuring the color space.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Use the same playlist, audio, and kind of movement you intend to stream. Watch YouTube’s stream health in Live Control Room and OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators. YouTube recommends testing with similar movement and audio before the event.
Choose a bitrate your BSNL connection can sustain
There is no single upload speed established here for every BSNL broadband or Bharat Fiber subscriber. Your usable upload can vary with plan, location, access technology, Wi-Fi conditions, congestion, and time of day. A download-speed figure—especially an advertised one—does not tell you how much upload capacity is reliably available for a continuous stream.

- Run a speed test on the connection and at roughly the time you expect to stream. Treat its upload result as a snapshot, not proof of sustained performance.
- As an initial ceiling, OBS troubleshooting guidance suggests using 75% of total upload speed when setting bitrate. That is a starting point for troubleshooting, not a BSNL guarantee. Leave additional room for audio, protocol overhead, and other household traffic; use less if upload speed varies.
- Test a private or unlisted stream under the real playlist conditions. A sustained test and stream-health indicators are more informative than a single speed-test result.
- Choose the highest resolution and frame rate that pass the test with headroom. Consider the measured stable upload, the codec, and the playlist’s motion rather than choosing on advertised broadband speed alone.
Troubleshoot dropped frames and unstable streaming
- OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube stream health degrades: Reduce OBS’s video bitrate first, then repeat the test. If it still struggles, lower output resolution or frame rate from 720p30 and test again.
- The speed test looks fast, but the live stream is unstable: A speed test is only a momentary result. Test at stream time and watch OBS and YouTube indicators during a sustained stream; real conditions may be less stable than the snapshot.
- 720p30 does not hold reliably: Do not force the 3 Mbps recommendation if the line cannot sustain it. Reduce bitrate and/or output resolution, then test again.
- Higher motion looks poor at the starting bitrate: Try increasing bitrate only if upload capacity is stable and dropped frames are not growing. If that trade-off is not available, retain a stable lower setting rather than sacrificing the stream’s continuity.
