The best overlay for chess is often the tournament board itself: capture Chess.com’s Events Analysis board in OBS, then add only the webcam, alerts, chat, or labels your layout needs. It keeps the position central and gives you control over board appearance and analysis. Choose a themed design for branding, or evaluate a specialized browser overlay if you need player details or live statistics.
Choose an overlay around what viewers need to see
A chess overlay has two jobs: make the board and game state easy to follow, and fit the stream’s format without crowding the position. Before choosing a source, check these points at the size your stream will actually display:
- Board legibility: Can viewers distinguish the pieces and squares? Are coordinates useful at your board size?
- Game state: Do names and clocks need to be visible? Will you analyze variations while viewers still need the current live position?
- Screen space: Can the board, names, clocks, webcam, and optional widgets fit without shrinking the board too much?
- Data and synchronization: Is the source simply decorative, or does it provide player details, clocks, or statistics? Confirm what it actually supplies and whether its data stays synchronized.
- Customization and upkeep: Can you change the board, pieces, colors, and surrounding theme? Does the source depend on a particular service, subscription, or browser page?
Best overall for tournament commentary: Chess.com Events Analysis captured in OBS
For commentary on Chess.com tournament games, the strongest documented starting point is Chess.com’s Events page in Analysis view. The board can show live games or analysis, and the page provides controls for board and piece appearance, coordinates, player names and clocks, engine and evaluation controls, and move classification. Right-clicking lets you draw colored arrows or highlight squares to explain a move. In a compact layout, names and clocks can sit above and below the board.
Set up the board capture
- Open the tournament’s Events page and select Analysis. Arrange the board and the information you want viewers to see before capturing it.
- Choose a capture source in OBS. Chess.com’s broadcast guide says Window Capture is generally preferred because other windows placed over the browser will not affect the capture. Screen Capture is another option if it better suits your setup.
- Crop the capture to the scene. Keep the board large enough to read, and include only the names, clocks, or page elements that help viewers follow the game. OBS can use multiple crops of the same window capture; the Chess.com guide says this can reduce memory use and CPU load compared with using multiple captures.
- Use Chroma Key only if you need it. Chess.com’s guide describes it as a way to remove or replace the analysis-page background when you want the board layer to look transparent. Check the result in the full scene so the board remains clear.
Keep the live position visible while analyzing
If you want to study a variation without losing the current game state, enable Live Board Tracking and open its linked tracking board in another browser tab. It follows selected games, but it does not mirror analysis moves made on the main board. Capture this second board separately; the Chess.com guide also recommends Window Capture for it.

Best for a branded look: chess-themed ready-made designs
Streamlabs’ November 15, 2023 article, “Best Overlays for Chess Gameplay,” lists Chess Galaxy, Cubic Wave, Black on Black, Block, and Nightmode. In that article, Black on Black is labeled free, while Chess Galaxy, Cubic Wave, and Block are labeled free for Streamlabs Ultra subscribers. These are dated access labels, not confirmation of today’s library or subscription terms; check the current listing before choosing or paying for a preset. Do not assume a themed design supplies live board data unless its current product description says so.
Best when you need extra player data: specialized browser overlays
ChessBhumi advertises a transparent browser-source layer with player names, ratings, and live-ticking clocks. ChesStats advertises live Chess.com and Lichess player-performance statistics, with overlay columns, alerts, a palette, and several output formats. Those are vendor descriptions, not independently verified findings: check current features, account requirements, availability, pricing, and data synchronization before building a scene around either one.

These sources may suit a stream that needs information beyond a captured game board, but confirm that the details your viewers need are actually provided. A browser source should not be treated as proof that every displayed value updates in step with the game.
Add alerts, chat, or labels as separate layers
OBS’s official tutorial describes how alert providers can supply alerts, event lists, chat boxes, and labels. Add the provider’s overlay URL to the scene as an OBS Browser source. OBS gives Streamlabs and StreamElements as examples, along with NerdOrDie and OWN3D Pro. These widgets complement a captured chessboard; they do not replace it.

Arrange the scene so the board stays readable
- Make the board the visual anchor; avoid letting a webcam frame or alert box compete with the position.
- Show clocks and player names when they help viewers follow the game, but remove unnecessary page elements from the crop.
- Use coordinates if they help your audience track commentary; Chess.com’s Analysis view lets you show or hide them.
- Use arrows and colored square highlights to point out ideas rather than covering pieces with extra labels.
- Preview the complete scene at its final stream size. A board that looks clear in a large editor preview can become difficult to read after it is scaled down.
Optional webcam: keep it secondary to the game
A webcam is not required for a chessboard or overlay to work. Chess.com’s 2023 community streaming guide names the Logitech C922 among streamer webcam recommendations, but that is not a current comparative camera test. Treat it as one optional camera suggestion, not a requirement or a claim that it is the best camera available.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a different use case—keeping an uploaded video live on YouTube 24/7 rather than building an on-screen chess overlay—StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not camera-based live chess commentary or an overlay source. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free first day.

Common setup problems and fixes
Other windows appear in the capture
If overlapping windows show up over the browser, use Window Capture for the Events page rather than capturing the whole screen, as Chess.com generally prefers for this setup.
The board or clocks are too small
Revisit the crop and scene layout. Remove page elements that are not helping viewers, and give the board more room before adding another widget.

The analysis board no longer shows the current game position
Analysis moves on the main board do not mirror to the Live Board Tracking board. Open the linked tracking board separately if viewers need to keep seeing the live position while you analyze.
A themed preset is unavailable or has different access terms
Streamlabs’ listed free and Ultra labels come from its November 2023 article. Check the current library listing and subscription conditions rather than relying on those older labels.
A browser overlay’s statistics or clock do not match expectations
ChessBhumi and ChesStats describe their own overlay features, but those claims were not independently verified. Check the current provider information and confirm the displayed data and update behavior before relying on it in a broadcast.
Check chess rights and platform rules before going live
An overlay does not grant permission to broadcast a game, music, images, or other material included in a stream. Make sure you have the rights needed for everything you show or play, and check the applicable platform rules before broadcasting. If you are applying to Chess.com’s streamer program, its help page, updated July 28, 2026, says applicants need at least 1,000 followers or subscribers or an established reputation in the chess community, and must stream chess at least 10 hours monthly. It also describes application review and an affiliate-code benefit for accepted streamers; verify the live application terms before relying on them.
